I'm not really back Douglas, that was a trailer I did for the channel page some years back and for some reason it popped up as a "new" video. I was clearing out some videos to try and reduce the number a bit and must have pressed a bad button. Hopefully there might be a few more videos maybe in mid-October time but my GoPro gear is getting a bit unreliable so it might give up on me.

Hello Phillip, I just found your videos while researching fishing on the Isle of Lewis. I've really enjoyed them. I'm actually going to be on the Isle of Lewis on September 11, to fish for brown trout. Any info you would be willing to share about flies to use or a place to go would be greatly appreciated. Also, can you tell me what your GoPro set up is? Kind regards, Michael

Hi Michael - my GoPros are kind of playing up a bit at the minute so I'm probably not the person to ask about how to build a working system :-) I have two GoPros - a 7 and a 10 - and I tend to mount the Hero 10 Black on my chest mount. To get the shots with me in them I use the GoPro 7 and I attach it to my walking stick using the GoPro "Jaws flex clamp." I always have a stick with me as it is very handy for walking the moor and where I fish is almost always soft ground so I just push the stick into the ground, clip on the Jaws clamp thing, and I'm good to go. This saves carrying a tripod. I use the Rode Wireless 2 microphones and link them to the GoPro 10 using the "media mod" but the unfortunate problem with this is that the media mod isn't waterproof - however it is the best solution I've got at the minute. There are about 1000 brown trout lochs so it is very hard to give specific advice and it also very much depends on what you want - recently I've been fishing the very dour lochs for example as I'm enjoying the challenge of seeing if I can get a fish from them but this may not be what you'd want. Where are you going to be staying, that is also a big factor in where I might suggest you fish? In terms of flies then your favourite wet flies in size 10 or 12 will probably cover you for everything. In the past I always fished dark flies - black pennells, teal and black, and similar - but recently I've started fishing more bright flies such as the clan chief, goat's toe and the like. If you are looking for perfect flies from Lewis then I'm a big fan of John Maclean's flies as he lives and fishes on Lewis and ties top quality flies in a range of patterns that do really well on the island, including the Barvas Crippler which is deadly for trout. The best way to contact him is via his facebook profile: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057469959391 Let me know the general area where you are staying and I will suggest a few lochs but also keep in mind that part of the fun with Lewis trout fishing is exploring, apart from anything else many lochs are rarely fished and so can produce surprising results plus lochs tend to change over the years. Also are you fit enough to walk the moor and able to navigate on fairly dangerous and featureless moor? One loch I would fish used to produce really top notch trout in the 5lb sort of size, then all of a sudden the size of the trout reduced to the 1 - 2lb range but you could catch a lot of them for a day, more recently the numbers and size of fish have reduced such that you'd be lucky to get a handful of 4 inch fish for a day. This is a very remote loch with no human interference but it has just changed with time.

Thank you for all the information! We’re arriving on the 11th and will be staying on the west side of the isle a few miles north of the community center. We’re going to drive around on the 12th to see the sites and I plan on making a few casts here and there as we come across different waters that don’t require a permit. I bought a one day permit for Carloway on the 13th and I was planning on fishing the river for brown trout. Any info about the Carloway would be greatly appreciated. I wish we were going to spend another day or two on Lewis and maybe I will change our plans to do that. We’re coming from abroad and I didn’t realize all the fishing to be had in the Outer Hebrides. We’re just visiting Lewis and then heading back to Scotland.
Funny you mentioned navigation because I thought of that while I was watching one of your videos. If someone that wasn’t familiar with the area didn’t pay attention to where they were going, they could easily get lost without any major landmarks to orient from. And if the fog came in, a person could really get turned around. I’m definitely fit enough and I have GPS so I should be good. I also won’t be getting far from the road unless we stay another day so I can hike into a more remote loch. I’ve contacted John and hope to be able to get flies in Stornoway when we get off the ferry.
Thanks for explaining your GoPro set up, especially the microphone piece.
      Kind regards,
      Michael

@@michaelmcgee8711 Generally speaking the rivers on Lewis don't produce worthwhile trout fishing and no one locally fishes them for trout. If there is water in Carloway then there is a chance of a salmon - a friend and his mate had 14 for a day on it some years back - but I'm going to suggest that it isn't worthwhile fishing for trout. The lochs at the top of the river - Labeled Lagsabhat Iarach and Lagsabhat Ard on this map: www.bing.com/maps?osid=0a4e4f1a-669b-40de-9f46-d635ab3b507c&cp=58.248515~-6.707622&lvl=14.193961&style=s&pi=0&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027 - these lochs would provide better sport for trout than the river. Both these lochs hold a reasonable head of trout to maybe 1/2lb but they also have a few very big trout in them though these big fish rarely come to the fly. Across the road Loch Airigh Seibh www.bing.com/maps?osid=0eeb7ef8-0d19-482f-ae92-5217eb3271bf&cp=58.249803~-6.669098&lvl=14.193961&style=s&pi=0&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027 is over a small hill and so can't be seen from the road making it feel a bit remote. It is a nice loch and on the right day can produce a lot of trout, though they are usually small and in the 1/4lb range. Between Carloway and the village of Shawbost to the north Loch Raoinebhat sits right beside the road and can provide good sport with trout. The fish tend to be in the 1/2lb range with some a bit bigger but there are also some monster trout in there. The loch is deep, don't wade as it drops into big holes, but there is good parking at the "Norse Mill" at the Shawbost end of the loch. Raoinebhat can fish quite well in a northerly wind and I prefer to fish the north shore. This video was on the north shore of Raoinebhat and I saw lots of interesting stuff even if the fishing wasn't good for me: ua-cam.com/video/55MzVIvhvd8/v-deo.html In Carloway Loch Fasgro www.bing.com/maps?osid=1c25bdc4-9755-42b8-b762-06705ee0025d&cp=58.272203~-6.767662&lvl=14.738069&style=s&pi=0&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027 can sometimes produce good fishing, though it isn't as good as it used to be, and it is only a short walk from the road. It is quite a nice place to fish but the fish won't be big and I don't think there are as many of them as in the past when you could have maybe 10 for an hour. This video is on Fasgro: ua-cam.com/video/eCiPvZWxvzc/v-deo.html If you might be touring over to Great Bernera (an island off Lewis accessed by a bridge and only a few miles from Carloway as the crow flies, but rather further by road) then the two lochs in the village of Breacleit can both fish well and are right by the roadside. If you turn to the west from the village you can drive to the end of Loch Barabhat which is a big, long, loch that is a bit more secluded. Barabhat is "dour" meaning that the fish can be hard to catch but they are good quality and tend to be in the 2 - 4lb range. This map shows the lochs at Breacleit and also the top end of Barabhat: www.bing.com/maps?osid=cbef44d8-3131-42cf-986a-98f79f969be3&cp=58.224085~-6.837814&lvl=14.879986&style=s&pi=0&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027 For something a little different, especially if the wind is in the north, then Loch Eirearaigh at the village of Bru, close to Barvas, can produce reasonable fishing and sometimes really good quality fish. The loch is separated from the sea by a stone bank and so with a northerly wind you can stand on the stones fishing the loch with the Atlantic breakers crashing onto the stones behind you. I quite enjoy doing this now and again just for something different. Map is here: www.bing.com/maps?osid=e58cc979-7acb-4061-a092-59429847d548&cp=58.360231~-6.565814&lvl=14.879986&style=s&pi=0&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027 The big loch at Barvas is a salmon loch and so you require a permit to fish it. If you drive to the end of the village of Bru and open the gate you can drive down and park almost beside the loch - be sure to close the gate and park so you don't block the access and don't park outside the gate as that area is a turning circle for the bus. I would suggest that, if all possible, you try to spend a few months on Lewis if you even want to scratch the surface of the trout fishing and if you also want to try for salmon and sea trout it might take a few years :-)

@@caorach3354 Ahh, that explains why they didn't answer my email asking about the river fishing in Carloway😆. The number of lochs there is amazing. I thought the wilderness here in Idaho had a lot of lakes! Well, I'll be looking for you as we drive around just so I can meet you and say hello. Let me know if you ever venture to Idaho and I will line you out on fishing spots, or if you fancy upland bird hunting behind great pointers, I would be happy to take you. Best of luck with the rest of your season and I hope you keep the videos going. I enjoy your sense of humor and seeing the fish you catch!

@@michaelmcgee8711 To be fair to Carloway they are a sort of community run organisation and so are maybe not very efficient at answering communications. Sometimes things on Lewis happen at a slightly different speed to the rest of the world and this can be both nice, and extremely annoying :-) Thank you for your kind offers though Idaho is a bit far to go but you never know! If you are into your shotgun shooting then there is some excellent shooting to be had on Lewis including driven woodcock. Russell Hird has been bringing visitors to the island for some years now and one of the "big" draws is walked up red grouse over his pointers - he breeds vizslas. I know you are only having a quick visit but it is well worth taking a look at Russell's site for future reference: www.rjhsports.co.uk/shooting/ If you wanted something really challenging then he can arrange a MacNab (a salmon, brace of grouse, and stag in one day on one estate) though as you'd imagine many people try but not all are successful and the salmon tends to be the hard one. This year we had a really wet spring and this is very hard on the grouse and greatly reduces their breeding success so in many places they simply aren't shooting any grouse this season. This is a normal thing in that grouse numbers tend to fluctuate wildly so there is a surplus in some years and in other years there is very limited shooting.

My GoPro gear is dying and at the minute I'm loath to replace it as there doesn't seem to be anything better. I've no idea how this trailer got posted as I was actually removing some of my videos to tidy things up a bit and all of a sudden a "new" video that has been around for a few years popped up :-) Clearly I must have pressed a wrong button. I might get some fishing, and get to make some video, over the next month or so but it all depends on the GoPros not failing completely.

You must be the main watcher of my videos :-) I removed about 60 of the videos that had the least views, it just seemed the easiest way to do it. Most of them were relatively unexciting, though for some reason the salmon fishing videos always seem to do better than the trout ones so I have to guess that trout fishing is over represented in the ones that were removed. I just wanted to reduce the numbers down a bit as there is a lot of repetition and it is a pain for me wading through so many of them. Also many of the ones removed probably weren't getting watched more than a few times per year so no one will notice they are gone. I'm down to about 70 videos now so that's still a lot of fishing. I'm going to try and make some videos over the next few months if the gear keeps going and I will also keep looking around for a replacement for my cameras - basically I need a camera that can use external audio but remain waterproof and for some mad reason GoPros have never done that. I did try one of the Insta360 Ace Pro cameras as you can attach a mic wirelessly to it but the video quality was so awful that I returned it. All the reviews of the Insta360 were great until I actually tried it myself and realised that the video I was seeing online appeared to be carefully chosen not to highlight the quality problems. So we will see how it all pans out but if nothing else it has been a bit of fun for a few years.
