This film is such a double edged sword for me. The conservation effort is fantastic, no doubt, and as a fisherman myself I know that the people most engaged in fish population preservation are those who wish to collect the benefits of those populations. However it feels so hollow for rich westerners from nations that have effectively destroyed their own salmon populations to fly into a pristine wilderness and lecture the plebs about how great it is. They could put the money and effort they spend on fishing abroad into preservation of domestic fisheries, but they don´t. Why? Because our rivers in the Nordics for example are controlled by huge energy companies that have totally decimated salmon populations. That´s a difficult battle to win, so if you have the means you might as well escape to rivers that your living standard hasn´t ruined yet. Which brings me to the other issue with this film, the way the "poachers", as you call them, are treated. Salmon runs have fed people since the beginning of time, and regulation for the benefit of westerners is ruining a traditional lifestyle that would actually be completely sustainable without the ruination that western societies have bestowed upon their own rivers. Unless the poachers in this video are netting the entire river delta they would probably have less of an effect on salmon population than any of the classy and proper C&R gentlemen are having by just living in countries with hydro power. Apparently poaching incidents are very rare, so even the C&R stress on the fish population in this specific river could actually be greater than the poaching stress. All that being said, this was a great and inspiring film. I just wish people would realize that there is no need to fly to foreign lands to have great salmon fishing. We could have similar fishing much closer to home if we just made a bit of an effort and got our priorities straight. Even if I had the opportunity to fly to Russia for some amazing fishing I probably wouldn´t, because it would mostly serve as a depressing reminder of how badly salmonids are doing where I live.
Love it . Hats off to you guys. The best salmon fishing video I found on you tube. Please keep it that way. There is hope for the rest of the world. Conservation is the science that we must share and spread throughout the world. Whatever works to save the species can help them thrive . We keep hearing about overfishing. We’re here we have a pristine river and a growing population of salmon. It’s not gonna be easy but I think it can be duplicated throughout the world .We need to clean up our rivers. This is a great conservation model. And we can learn from it. So good to see these great size Atlantic salmon that we only hear about it. Great to hear him say he took in a 50 pound or that most of the big fish get away. Thanks for Sharing. all salmon should be caught and released till there numbers come back.. Fairplay to you Russia.
Add a huge decrease in commercial fishing, habitat restoration that was caused by logging and urban sprawl, dam removal, and dam modification where dam removal isn’t possible. These are what is really needed. Rod and reel releases would help, but not much. Yet none of these solve the issue of the vanishing ocean food sources that salmonoids need. We know volcanic eruptions cause massive food booms. So maybe we could sequester car pollution from carbon capture plants to aid the planktons.
What a fine example for fish conservation programs worldwide. I wish they could come to India and do similar work on saving the Mahseer. Its on the endangered lists now.
Hopefully as India develops conservation will become a higher priority. The unfortunate truth is that caring about nature is a privilege only afforded to those who have already attained a comfortable living standard. This is a catch 22 since development also often leads to extra pressures on fish populations. Hopefully you can learn from the mistakes we´ve made in the western world, but I fear that since your human population is so much higher it´s going to be a difficult battle. Are there any efforts that you know of being directed towards preservation of fish?
A bit sad watching the great and the good of Britain telling us how great the fishing in this part of Russia is when our own rivers at home continue to decline because of the pollution and neglect by big business and Agriculture who are owned and invested in by the same kind of people.
Very well put together. A nice balance between the fishing and the conservation aspect. Thank you to the people that make this possible for the fish and the fisherman....... quite the accomplishment. May the efforts bear fruit for generations of fish, and fishermen.
It’s not just for the filthy rich. It’s for the ones who are ready to save the money to enjoy wild nature and also pay for the keeping of the wild nature. If everyone would give back as much to nature as these guys do there would never be any harm to earth.
Of course it’s only for the Ultra rich and their public school clients .....don’t think for a minute that any old keen fisher can go these places ... There are land owners in Scotland throwing locals off ‘ their ‘ property where people have fished for years as a right ....The People ‘ of a country should be able to fish where they wish to ...... Nobody can “ own”water or the fish in it .......
I have been 3 times. It's ok that's all. To tell the truth I enjoy south west Wales in the UK more. Once you catch a few it becomes a bit Monotonous. Reading the comments below I must disagree with some, it's not only the wealthy That visit, in fact far far from it. Lots of sportsmen will save every penny to go on a quality fishing trip, or shooting trip. These kind of people are another breed and love the wild and adventure.
Top top work guys, looks like heaven for an Irish fly fisherman like me, definitely on my bucket list, its so well run also, we could learn a thing or two in our Irish salmon n trout fisheries from this group, hopefully i will one day fish these rivers and bring a little of that knowledge back to Irish salmon rivers to help conserve the great spieces. Very impressed
After 22nd of Feb. 2022 I would never, never go tu Russia to catch a salmon.... Russia has lost worldwide sympathy, respect and opportunities it had in flyfishing tourism.
fantastic conservation but you say if you cannot put up with the terraine dont come i would like to fish for brown trout but my health sets me to walking large distance
This is how world runs now. Money, snobs, nothing else. Everybody can catch the "lifetime fish" there. You have to pay only. This is not sport fishing....at all.
Well I am not a fan of there government overall but i think there the ones you should be least worried about. They have the best runs by far . When almost all the others have declined... There's a perfect storm of isolation, privatization and the russian gov there. I noticed this in cuba with marine preserves there authoritarian government. Nobody is going poaching thats for sure. I also there a company has specific guiding access to it as well.. 'Avalon'
In the UK we can’t even protect our borders never mind the salmon !! I’m talking about 500 plus immigrants that come over on boats this Easter weekend, 5000 so far this year and it’s only the 2nd of April and there has only been 14 days when it’s been calm enough in the English Channel for the illegal immigrants to cross , our country has gone down the toilet, we used to have amazing fishing on the river Spey and the river Dee but abstraction from the rivers and west coast fish farming with parasites and netting hundreds of seals that should be shot aswel and since 2023 our salmon became a protected species, and what are our government doing here absolutely nothing as it’s all about big business, fish farming and allowing the immigrants in to do the jobs that our lazy on sick people that won’t work because we have a benefit system that gets abused, we used to call it Great Britain now we need big change and reform Nick Farage is the man we need to get in power either as a leader for reform UK 🇬🇧 or the conservatives, anyway I tip my hat to Russia 🇷🇺 you have a amazing leader in president Putin and he’s a real man who loves his motherland and people and it’s rich history not like our bunch of melts like Richie sunak and khan as mayor , we have become a joke , anyway I’m off for two weeks fishing on the ray and Spey at the end of this month it might just fish well this spring!! Anyway Oceans of love from the Cotswolds everyone and let’s enjoy what we have and try and preserve it for our children and there children!!!🙏🇬🇧russia ❤️
funny the russians also have steelhead in kamchatka, There the least touched steelhead rivers on earth. All the biologists go there to study. April vokey did a interview with a dude who went, paradise!
This is Russia they kill off half the4 own population they don5 give a fuck about nothen but what they can get the worst of humanity every way .they put porlital prisoners in Siberia March millions of undesirable too death .these people ar3 so warped they wouldn’t know what’s right if u shoes it to them first hand .remember-if 5hey could-kill us all they do it .suck it rick prick thank god it’s easier for a rich person to fit through the eye of a needle then to get into heaven ,look god even against u rich pricks .ur fucked if the big man think that haha 🖕stay out of out politics Russia scum bags get in line for some used toilet paper.
I grew up poor and I'm still very poor I spend more than 75% of my annual income on nothing more than fishing and hunting supplies I love nature with all my heart I love the fact that these people put so much time and effort into protecting this species and keeping it Untouched by man I hope that one day I too will get to enjoy the beauty of this place and many more
I wish it was the same here in the Pacific Northwest. The rivers and the fish should be protected, but they are not. Should catch & release all anadromous fish that migrates these rivers. It's a shame our rivers don't have much of a run of fish, and it's mostly hatcheries raised fish here.
I would love to fish here great work they have done and still do they all should feel proud off themself dont think i could save all that money to fish there not cheap but but a trip of a life time it would be.
well yes, i totally agree, you have to be rich to enjoy the litza, However, if you practice common sense strict conservation rules, fly only , totally catch and release etc. you would not have to pay 20.000 dollars a week to fish it!!! here in the states, it's a right to fish, not a priveledge!! we have 50.000 thousand steelhead return here at the st.joe river on some years , the best in the world!!!! they can have there privledge rules
Russia....that's probably the best nature preservation in the world .In America we destroy everything.Pure bred fish ,no salmon farms or stocking programs ,this is a real treasure.
james mackay Absolutely - pellet fed farm fish are the most toxic food you can buy and destroy the natural migratory fish stocks through disease - it's really needs international legislation on both sides of the Atlantic if the Scottish, Norwegians, American and Canadian runs of Salmon and Sea Trout are to be saved.
I totally agree with you. The Sacramento river king salmon fishery is nothing compared to early 70s and 80s. In the 1980s there were big salmon 30 and 40 pounds. These fish are very few now. 20 inch salmon are now kept!!! So terrible
Thats the benefit of a being tyrannical nobody fishes when they say not too.. Cuba has huge nature reserves too. I am happy in the west (i know its not that bad over there, at least in russia,, cuba yeah its that bad)
Your high - One place populated to serve rich westerners….The whole of Russia has been horrible for conservation and fisheries and now run by a madman murdering thousands of innocent women, children, old men and women - how about “save the humans”?
Magnificent film. I know i,ll never get there but it genuinely warms my soul to know that this very special place exists. And will continue to exist as it is . Thank you.
Not to worry, Canadian Great lakes offer salmon fishing affordable to all. You don't have to be lord to catch 20 lb salmon on Lake Ontario. Salmon Catcher Charters Toronto Ontario, Canada
Where are the local Russian and if there are any indigenous children seeing these fish, holding the young in their hands, see the flies and running waters...learning it is their heritage and future? After all they are ultimately the stewards that really count, and who will pass this attitude and reverence for nature on to future generations.

Fishing place for elite. Not so sure if I like this kind of stuff. Heh no environmental impact? What about those Russian helicopters? Bottled water? Wtf? In Russia recycling isn't a factor..
Those with wealth and power have destroyed salmon and sea trout in most of Europe with there fish farms and pens. Walking over spawning ground which cause the biggest loses in river. people who been fishing rivers long before the rich and powerful got interested and took over, now call these people poachers and blame them for the loses in numbers in fish stock, there was no loses in numbers before. Think about it when was salmon fishing started and how long before that locals had been fishing the rivers for food and to sell.

@jack-zz9hb Spot on, they carry that weird looking cross for all the wrong reasons. Elitists, NOT real Christians.
I had Big Alex as a guide in 2006. Without him I wouldn't have been able to land the 43 pounder from the Kharlovka. He was easily the best guide ever.
English snob!! They should call the place snobsville, good job looking after the place it’s a pity for most of us we will never get to fish there.
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Shows what happens when man is taken out of the equation as much as possible.
I totally disagree, it can be managed properly to let people enjoy it
too true
