A great deal of hearsay, I watched Carson from the mid-60s onto 92 before Jay Leno took over, everyone is entitled to their own opinion I disagree about Rodney Dangerfield being pointed out as one of several people who were not invited back more commonly . All you have to do is watch Dangerfield with Carson, he was revered by Carson.
Carson was right about politics casting a negative vibe over a light hearted climate. You would think todays late night host would have learned from Carson.
Bob Hope should've been respected for all the times he went to our troops. From WWII to the Vietnam War. He went from the South Pacific to Europe, any where our troops were at.
Bob hope still answered his door every Halloween up till 100 giving kids candy when they knocked on his door in Los Angeles, he did this since he moved to Los Angeles in 1938. It was something he aways did - very few people knew this about him, other then his neighbor's and the kids each Halloween. A friend of mine as a kid, we went trick or treating together, and his parents brought us to bob hopes neighborhood and i got candy from him that night.
Carson was the greatest TV host ever! His humor and quick wit was unmatched. He by far was the funnest person to ever be on TV. He was so smart to keep politics out of his show. Today’s late night TV hosts could practically double their audience if they simply keep politics out of their monologue. Johnny was the best and no one has come close to the entertainer he was.
I’m 76 . I have fond memories of staying up to watch Johnny Carson with my parents when I was in high school! It was his show. He needed to have a rapport with his guests!
I think he can ban whomever he wants. We may not agree with his reasons. But if I don't want someone coming to my house, I don't need someone else's approval.
Bob Hope appeared more than any other guest (131 times) while Johnny might have gotten tired of Mr. Hopes routine he was one of the people that did a speech for Mr. Hopes 90th birthday celebration.
The great Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. were both banned when they openly left the Democrat party and turned Republican. Both are musical geniuses and will never be forgotten. ❤
From what I have read, Hope wasn't banned, NBC told Carson he would host Hope any time Hope wanted to be on the show. Hope was starting to lose it, did the same jokes over and over, losing tracks of conversation. At one point Carson told his staff, "If I ever get that bad, kill me."
He has a right to ban whoever he wants , It is his show! Not everybody, likes everybody. I do the same if I was him.... Why be uncomfortable on your own show and have to talk with people you don't like, etc..
It was Johnnys show. He was the most profitable show for NBC for many years. It's not unusual for shows to have guests they don't invite back. It was Johnny's show he can ban who over he wants. Its too bad about Joan Rivers there were hard feelings on both sides.
Johnny Carson entertained beautifully for many year including my college years at Notre Dame! He interrupted many a student studying for tests and exams with his late night show!
Johnny Carson’s show was loved by many. People may not like his strict structure and direction, but Johnny understood that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Seems like he wasn’t perfect, but genius seldom is.
Carson's show.... Carson's choices. When you've been such an iconic presence, there's no reason a guest list shouldn't be able to be altered by the "bread-winner" for the network.
It was so difficult to stay up that late, but if I did I was always happy Johnny was on. It was difficult letting go and its still a position that has yet to be filled and I doubt it ever will.
Now we have Kimmel, who just yesterday was accused of some very nasty things . Everyone already knew though. Jon Stewart is no better. Colbert and Maher are just lame.
Everyone has a dark side, and behind that nice smile of his, Carson was quite possibly overly sensitive and a narcissist that didn't like anyone outshining him.
I Loved watching Johnny Carson, as Did my Parents (I’m 73-Parents are gone). But, after watching this, I’m extremely saddened by his response to some of the greatest Artists of All Time!! I Definitely Now Have A Different View of that Man, that I felt was so very talented!!! 😢❤🙏🏼
I’m so intrigued by this assessment of Carson. Most notably, his reasons for disliking Dana Carvey. Carson couldn’t stand the fact that Bob Hope wasn’t capable of doing anything off the cuff which was Carson’s wheelhouse. So I don’t get Johnnys beef with Dana. All that said, I love❤ reminiscing about all these celebrities of my growing up years. Ok yes, at 65 I’m still growing up.
I watched Johnny for years then I got a night shift job for 9 long years. When I went back to days, there was Johnny, still the same show. Just like I never missed anything.
Banning Howie Mandel would be a plus for any show! His pedestrian, immature and unfunny humor was a perfect match for the dopey No Deal show he later hosted. Just like his humor, there was a lot of cheering and yelling and zero substance.
I remember when Joan Rivers was on the show. I remember her talking about childbirth. It hadn't been long since I'd had my baby girl. I watched her through the years right up to when she passed away. I felt like I'd lost a friend.
Joan Rivers did not rise to prominence through reality series' in the 21st century. How old are you to even think that? She rose to prominence through her stand-up routines and then when she became a regular guest on Carson's show in 1965, long before reality TV shows even existed. SMH
Johnny Carson was a very personable, but borderline comedic celebrity. He also had an ego the size of Texas... and it was unfounded. I am not surprised by his ban list and the reasons for banning a lot of these celebrities. His retirement was no loss, to be honest. Leno did a far better job hosting IMHO...
I knew Johnny could be annoyingly childish and I resented the way he treated poor Joan but my Mom loved him. She would stay up long past when she should just to watch Johnny. She had to get up around 5:30 to fix breakfast for all of us and then get ready to drive clear across town to her job at the bus company. But still, there was no way she was missing Johnny. I carried on her tradition and was watching the last night of his show...it was very sad.
As great as I think Newhart and Groucho would have been as host, it was best they turned it down. Carson is an all time classic. His Iowan boyish charm enabled him to carry off double entendres without seeming to racy for American TV in the 1960s. He just made everything funny. Groucho had his game show, and it was truly great. Newhart had three sitcoms, and well....the first two are classic....especially the finale to Newhart. But no one will ever replace Carson on late night. Letterman had his moments, but most often, he just seemed snarky and mean. Leno was pretty funny, but really....not in the same league. Fallon is a total loss....I can't believe they gave him that job.
When we lived in Houston Texas, in 1976 to 1978. We lived in townhouse that Carson owned. He came one time to check out the property. It was on Berryknol lane, in Houston
Joan Rivers guest hosted the Tonight Show numerous times and was the person most likely to eventually take over the Show with Carson's blessing. However, she double crossed Carson by negotiating her own talk show behind his back. Carson saw this as direct competition to his show and never forgave her for that.
I watched Joan rivers only on the tonight show…I loved her she was so naturally funny…she was banned because she was better then him all around and he was so jealous….
Carson’s issues with Rivers was a little different. It wasn’t that she was going to the new network, FOX, or that she was going to be on at the same time as the Tonight Show. It was that she never let him know. While she was still one of his current guest hosts, it was announced that she was getting her own she. He found out about by seeing the announcement and being asked for a response. Had she let him know prior to the announcement, I suspect he would have had no issues. She called the next day and he felt betrayed. Considering she owed her success to him, I can see his feelings of betrayal. There was also a good chance that he might have been thinking of her as his worthy replacement.
'Didn't realize Carson had such an LA face, smiling and hanging with someone while hiding his true feelings about them. Though Johnny really helped Joan Rivers' career immensely, and Joan owed Carson the respect of his blessing before agreeing to a late night show of her own. Respect is, until proven otherwise, gender-blind.So It's a convenient cop-out to simply claim Carson didn't approve of a woman host when he had always been a choosy guy and handed her the reigns to her host his show.
His show his rules. I never heard about banned entertainers. His 4 marriages never didn't bother his career. I watched for entertainment and never thought about his personal psychology. Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. He wasn't a hateful Cult leader just an entertainer. RIP.
Carson was great. Was right of passage when allowed to stay up late to watch Carson. He had great guests, but readxwhen camera was off didn't talk much to guests that he was not close too. Some guests could be annoying
It was called the Johnny Carson show. What he wants on his show is up to him and he did not like celebrities taking the piss. Brilliant man who stood the test of time.
My Aunt Minni Black appeared on the Tonight Show February 18, 1988 season 26 episode 70 we lost our VHS years ago she was on the show with Dudley Moore if you could upload that episode I would be ever so faithful
Many of these supposed difficult relationships are probably just fabricated. The whole persona of Carson's sensitivity is probably exaggerated for ever more entertainment and viewer attraction.
What I really liked about Carson is that he would stay away from all politics. Today every one of the late shows is all about politics. Don't watch any since Carson.
Will never be another after hours night show host as great as Mr. Carson
Bob Hope should've been respected for all the times he went to our troops. From WWII to the Vietnam War. He went from the South Pacific to Europe, any where our troops were at.
I thought Carson loved Rodney.
Bob hope still answered his door every Halloween up till 100 giving kids candy when they knocked on his door in Los Angeles, he did this since he moved to Los Angeles in 1938. It was something he aways did - very few people knew this about him, other then his neighbor's and the kids each Halloween. I love that David Spade is shown while they are referencing Dana Carvey
Some say that Carson was not a very nice person. It's not uncommon that a smiling face hides a nasty personality.
Seemed like Dangerfield was on the show every other week.
Carson was and always will be the best.
Johnny Carson was the absolute best no one can top him.
Best Guest: Rodney Dangerfield: His girlfriend took off with his best friend. So then she was gone and he had no dog.
Bob Hope appeared more than any other guest (131 times) while Johnny might have gotten tired of Mr. Hopes routine he was one of the people that did a speech for Mr. Hopes 90th birthday celebration.
Johnny Carson was human with all the faults we struggle with.
Clash of egos. I can do without Hollywood.
Johnny made decisions insuring a consistent level of quality. Never another like him.
Wow! Bob Newheart could have had Carson's job! Mind Blown. Bob was always a popular brilliant guest on The Tonight Show.
The great Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. were both banned when they openly left the Democrat party and turned Republican. Both are musical geniuses and will never be forgotten. ❤
Dangerfield and Carson got along great. Rodney appeared on the Tonight Show many times and Johnny couldn't get enough of Rodney
Fact
.His show was a success!
Johnny Carson was the most iconic show. Love ❤️ Johnny
The only one that was no surprise was Joan Rivers. I remember all that when it happened.
I used to love it when Joan Rivers filled in for Johnny. WOW she was FUNNY!!! 😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
Wayne Newton may have gotten the worst face lift in history.
It was Johnnys show. He was the most profitable show for NBC for many years. It's not unusual for shows to have guests they don't invite back. It was Johnny's show he can ban who over he wants. Its too bad about Joan Rivers there were hard feelings on both sides.
His Father was my Grandfathers Brother! His name was David Emory Carson. May they all Rest in Peace.
Carson was the best. Back when late night was funny.
Johnny Carson entertained beautifully for many year including my college years at Notre Dame! He interrupted many a student studying for tests and exams with his late night show!
jc had a dark side, get on his bad side you were gone. 4 divorces tells me something.
I can't blame him for banning Howie Mandell...I find him HIGHLY irritating.
Joan Rivers was the no 1 guest host.
Johnny Carson’s show was loved by many. People may not like his strict structure and direction, but Johnny understood that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Seems like he wasn’t perfect, but genius seldom is.
Carson was great at what he did . However, it seems with all the fame and fortune he also became full of himself
His show, his choice of guests is appropriate.
I loved Bob Newheart as well. He would have been a good host.
Carson's show.... Carson's choices. When you've been such an iconic presence, there's no reason a guest list shouldn't be able to be altered by the "bread-winner" for the network.
Johnny Carson died in 2005 from respiratory failure from Emphysema. Don't use tobacco or vape and stay away from places people do those things.
I wish we had a late-night show with a host as funny and classy as Johnnie.
Carson was great at what he did, but in his personal life, he was a mean, vindictive man.
It was so difficult to stay up that late, but if I did I was always happy Johnny was on. It was difficult letting go and its still a position that has yet to be filled and I doubt it ever will.
Great show but he definitely had his own demons.
Mr. Carson was one of a kind. His successors have failed miserably.
I like Johnny, He was the best!
Carson was the greatest host ever... but he was also a prick.
In some cases it's not a matter of getting banned as much as not having enough reason to have them on.
I agree with Johnny. All of these people were irritating

I hate that norm Macdonald never got to be on with carson
I watched Johnny for years then I got a night shift job for 9 long years. When I went back to days, there was Johnny, still the same show. Just like I never missed anything.
Stallone is an incredibly unpleasant individual
Bob Hope was a genuinely nice guy.
Banning Howie Mandel would be a plus for any show!
His pedestrian, immature and unfunny humor was a perfect match for the dopey No Deal show he later hosted.
Just like his humor, there was a lot of cheering and yelling and zero substance.
I think the bans are obviously about ego and insecurity. Too bad, because it diminishes him as a person. No sense of humor in these cases.
I remember when Joan Rivers was on the show. I remember her talking about childbirth. It hadn't been long since I'd had my baby girl. I watched her through the years right up to when she passed away. I felt like I'd lost a friend.
Being a late night host it's best to forgive, and realize when celebrities mock us it's just part of the business..
Joan Rivers did not rise to prominence through reality series' in the 21st century. How old are you to even think that?
She rose to prominence through her stand-up routines and then when she became a regular guest on Carson's show in 1965, long before reality TV shows even existed. SMH
You guys did what many of us have before. Confused Carvey with David Spade. It happens.
I love to watch clips of Robin Williams on Johnny Carson. The 2 together were brilliant and comedic.

Powerful information. Its "Hollywood" - The good, the bad & the ugly. Most of them have passed so water under the bridge.
Carson did not like when the joke was on him, but had not problem dissing someone else
i wish Johnny was still with us
Johnny was the best late night talk show host in my opinion ! I really miss him !
After Johnny Carson died, it was said that Johnny was terribly shy, and stayed away from crowds......
As great as I think Newhart and Groucho would have been as host, it was best they turned it down. Carson is an all time classic. Up until now I never realized how many great talents came out of Canada. Go Canada!
TV celebs can be some weird SOB’s…
Geeeezzz never realized Johnny Carson had such a fragile ego!
Did not know Lola Falana was still alive.Wish her well❤.
Joan Rivers guest hosted the Tonight Show numerous times and was the person most likely to eventually take over the Show with Carson's blessing. However, she double crossed Carson by negotiating her own talk show behind his back. Carson saw this as direct competition to his show and never forgave her for that.

Nice shots of David Spade in the Dana Carvey segment.
People who didn't know him shouldn't say anything bad about him. Especially, since he's passed. Let the dead rest in peace.
Carson’s issues with Rivers was a little different. It wasn’t that she was going to the new network, FOX, or that she was going to be on at the same time as the Tonight Show. Big deal. Ed Sullivan did the same thing long before Carson.

I thought Sandra Burnheart was banned from all shows 😮😮😮
Most of the people on this list, I remember seeing on the to night show many times. His show, his rules.
Though it's not well known, Johnny banned me from the Tonight Show, as well. Que Sera, Sera. Ron
Watched the Tonight Show regularly, but for the guests, I didn't really think Johnny was that funny.
My Aunt Minni Black appeared on the Tonight Show February 18, 1988 season 26 episode 70 we lost our VHS years ago she was on the show with Dudley Moore if you could upload that episode I would be ever so faithful

I appeared on the show when I as 20 in 1983
David Brenner and Gary Shandling were great guest host for Johnny.
As a child I enjoyed his show.
Carson did not want to hear franks songs anymore
