Great record of your walk Dexter I really enjoyed that. Your comment north of Alston where you said that you couldn't separate yourself from the Pennine Way at that point rings so true. I guess many people simply complete the trail, abut others emerge with it completely intertwined with them. I first walked the PW back in 1982 at the age of 15, and walked it again several times including as a section of my Lands End to JohnO'Groats backpack in 1985. I now live close to Hebden Bridge and out on the south Pennines sections every week, and each time I feel the urge to just follow it further North or South. I'm glad in many ways that the route lost much of it's appeal in the 90's in the wake of Wainwrights C2C, and over the years it became a walk of solitude again. I've done many of the big walks in the UK (CWT, Cambrian Way, Southern Upland Way etc), but the PW is the one which I will always feel a personal connection to.

I probably saw about 10 hikers on my whole trip and only hiked with other people for half a day. Thankfully I don't live too far from the trail (Holmfirth area) myself and revisited Black Hill a couple of weekends ago. The weather was truly awful and made me even more thankful for my wonderful trip this summer. That's incredible that you did a LE to JOG. I've actually left my job to spend next year hiking (spring onwards) the dream is the PCT but with that looking less and less likely my backup is a ridiculous winding JOGLE including CWT and Cambrian way. Would love to hear your recommendations on sections that can't be missed.
@@easydexter yes the PW was extremely popular in the late 70's & early 80's, it became a sort of right of passage or coming of age for many young adventurous people. But that also took it's toll on the route, and by the mid 80's some sections were so worn and boggy that walking it became a test of emotional and physical endurance. Tales of people literally sinking up to their thighs on Black Hill and getting lost on Bleaklow were not exaggerated. And the failure and drop out rate back then was very high. Though some bemoan the path repairs and rerouting particularly in the first 40 miles, I think they've helped to give the PW a second life, and still retain it's position as one for connoisseurs. I go back sometimes and follow a couple of the notorious sections that were rerouted after the Millenium, e.g. from Black hill direct across Wessenden Moor and Featherbed Moss, and if you know where to look you can still find a couple of 50 year old trail markers.
I'm desperately hoping that we start to get something similar to America. People thru hiking a lot. We already have amazing people leaving honesty boxes for hikers and the coastal path is almost finished. I don't think it will be long. I live to backpack.

@@easydexter experience is everything. I failed the downs. I had 27 kilos on. Thought I'd be the same as when I served, no problem. I got 22 miles in, in 7 hours and injured my foot.... don't get ke wrong, that night I camped like a king in my cot and self inflating matress and 3 man blackout tent, with my 7 kilos of wayfarer meals... looking back, that was gonna go wrong. Lesson learned. I shrunk my kit right down to 7.6kg base weight for winter camping and 5.6 for summer days and discovered dehydrated meals. I've since recovered and battered a couple of day hikes with the new set up. I'm skipping along now, can almost cover 5 mph and can keep it up for 6 hours so far. I'm thinking about getting a set of trainers, my boots are good but i feel like they're probably slowing me down a bit. Just wanna say, you are an inspiring man. I watched your record breaking walk a couple of days back. Beast mode!

Lovely video, I'm preparing for my second PW journey which I'll do with my daughter next year when she finishes her exams. I did it "fast and light" (it should be called long and light as I wasn't going fast 🤣) a few years ago, I did it in 11 days but I pushed myself a bit too hard and there were days where I didn't enjoy myself, this time we're planning on 14 days. Was your waterproof jacket a frog toggs ul jacket? I've heard loads of American through hikers using them, how do they stack up in UK weather?
That's awesome that you are doing it with your daughter, special times! Yeah Frogg Toggs are still my favourite waterproof jackets! Mainly because I'm pretty prone to ripping them and they are cheaper to replace 😂 they are pretty darn good at keeping the water out too though!
@@easydexter thanks, I might go with the jacket and pant set, I'm sick of spending big money on flimsy ultralight rain gear just for it to fail after a year or so. At least I won't mind as much for the price frog toggs go for.
@@trooperwolfie we are on the same page with this! I tried out a couple of more expensive UL raincoats and found they performed worse that frog toggs. Note the frogg bottoms won't last you very long, they usually rip after about 5 miles for me 😂
@Easy Dexter Great 😊 I just completed my first long distance hike and just wanted to let you know I used your cold soaking method to avoid packing a cook kit. Did the noodles and mashed potato mix a few times and it defo worked for me too, so thanks for that. Really saves on space and weight doesn't it? Others I've mentioned it to didn't seem impressed though haha. You're right, it's not for everyone.
That’s on my to do list. I’m 57 now and did a lot of hiking when I was a young lad. I’m not sure I could match 13 days but would love to have a go at completing it

I averaged 20 miles a day on this one which is probably a little faster than average but completely doable if you're in decent hiking shape and using modern lightweight gear. The Pennine way is an awesome trail though, so the longer you take the better 😁

Awesome. One of the best trails in the UK in my opinion. Though I may be biased having spent a lot of my youth exploring black Hill. Good luck mate stay in touch!

13 days is probably very fast, Wikipedia says that the transition may take 19 days.
I averaged 20 miles a day on this one which is probably a little faster than average but completely doable if you're in decent hiking shape and using modern lightweight gear. The Pennine way is an awesome trail though, so the longer you take the better 😁
