Let’s be honest. High fashion models don’t have pink and purple hair. They need to have natural coloured hair to be a “blank slate” for designers and not take away from the clothing.

she's so cool but her pink hair's been gone for a long time, now her hair is just like any other models (It's more naturally colored? It's never bad, I'm pretty sure the job requires it so that more focus would be given on the clothes)

i was about to say this. and their excuse is always "well you're gonna have to get used to this if you want to be a model sweetie" i don't know of any model that gets/got constant, drastic makeovers and bleached her hair all the time, except for maybe fernanda ly as mentioned above but that's her signature look. they're supposed to not divert from the clothes so they look as natural as possible. they're also supposed to have a distinct, signature look if they're more well known models, and they don't change their looks all the time precisely because they're sought after by brands because of the way they look. they also have deals with brands that looked for a specific type of model and getting a makeover while on a contract would probably not be a good idea

@Jessica Naunheim I completely agree. When I saw the purple hair I was like “who tf is gonna hire her with that hair?” Obviously it’s a different field, but my cousin is a professional dancer and she says that they prefer girls with natural looking hair vs unnatural colors. First episode has a lot in common with cult initiations. Break down their wills by changing their appearance in an uncomfortable way and simultaneously the strength of their identity, tell them they're "boss" for doing what they're told (really manipulative, even if unintentionally), then have them pose completely exposed? That's major psychological power play stuff to make them lose their sense of autonomy and self-ownership. That's not true empowerment... very much the opposite. Poor girls. :(

I have to agree with you, whether or not one feels the red-head gal's attachment to her natural hair is valid, what was said to her, followed by the virginity comment that was very, very obviously not about hair, was so offensive to me my gut reaction was wishing she would have the courage to get up and walk out right there. I don't know if she got herself into something she didn't really understand, or what, but under no circumstances is it acceptable to do something to a person that causes or makes them feel like they are losing jurisdiction over their own body.

And SO MANY people comment on how they think it's pretty and how people try to get it from a bottle and they just don't get there. It's so easy to ruin red hair. I made the mistake of getting highlights when I didn't get them naturally as much in the summer now and I'm so bummed with how long it's taking to get back to my fully natural color. That poor girl was 100% justified in being concerned. If they wanted her to be a redhead, they should've left her color alone. Give her a dramatic cut if you want to switch it up but why dye a gorgeous natural redhead to a fake flat red?

And now that I've gotten to her before and after...BRAD HER HAIR DOES NOT LOOK THE EXACT SAME. It's so flat, there's no variation in the color. She looks like a fake redhead and there's NOTHING more annoying to a natural redhead than a fake redhead trying to call themselves a ginger. And she's right. Her hair won't be the same. It's going to take her AGES to get her back to its natural red, if she ever gets there again.

But I keep it shoulder length now , and I do an under color (I use med brown and it comes out dark cuz of the blonde in my hair lol ) but I lost a lot of thickness due to sickness and surgeries and I wish I had what I used to.

I really think it's messed up that they made the girly twin wear a more masculine hairstyle. Black women are constantly masculinized and defeminized (see for example any Black female athelete) people claim Serena Williams is a man etc. So to see a Black woman whose identity is so clearly tied to femininity and then they purposely strip it from her to make her upset, is especially cruel to me.
We already know this from past seasons, but this show hates Black models and often mistreats them just to get a rise out of them and that's just wrong.
Tyra especially would cut ppl's natural hair knowing how much their hair meant to them.

As a black female I see it go both ways. I genuinely liked it when I saw hair on black females get cut and then they ROCK the short hair, cause short or almost shaved hair doesn't automatically equate to masculine. And as someone who did have such a huge tie to my long hair, it's honestly more toxic to our community. We think long hair is pretty when that's not true. I cut off all my hair and I loved it cause it made me feel free cause I didn't need the hair to feel "girly." But granted that's my opinion and I understand where she's coming from. The idea that being a model means you have to sacrifice your identity is just awful. The word "model" means like.. an example that others can strive to imitate to better themselves. Why do we want to prop people up after telling them to give up who they are and what they believe in? I wish the modeling industry was about picking cool people and letting them represent themselves. I'm an artist and a lot of artists will agree with me that it's hard to be into what you're doing and make good art when you're out of sync with yourself. You have to act fake and then with enough of it, you feel fake to your core. I just think it's sad that the modeling industry is about making people change to something they don't feel comfortable in and then saying that's beautiful. Okay, yeah, they look visually beautiful, but it's not beautiful to do that to someone, to make someone feel that way. The pain underneath is hidden as they sacrifice their own identities to fit someone else's standards... that's not what I want my kids to look up to. They're people, not dolls. The show should change for the girls, not the other way around. Think how amazing it would be to explore them as individuals and bring out what naturally makes them beautiful, and let them be the way they feel beautiful and show that to people. Genuine beauty - and about more than just their looks. THAT's what should be modeled for others to see and strive to be like.
People say "be yourself" and "stand up for what you believe in" yet when some of these girls try to, they're literally mocked and shunned. They signed up for it? So what? They have the right to challenge mistreatment.

It's actually rude though when someone says "this is important to me and my gender identity to have a certain QUALITY hair style (aka: girly, androgynous etc.) and they pick the opposite. That seems abusive honestly. Peoples gender identity and expression is nothing to fuck around with in terms of their MAIN "SIGNATURE" look. Why would you pick something that would make someone feel inauthentic to their gender expression? That ain't it for me.

You have a good point. People should do whatever they want with their own appearance if it affects their identity enough that changing it could mess with their deeper self-image. Projects like this dumb show and their (often bad) makeovers might not be worth the compromise or hassle. After 22 seasons, these games played for drama should be expected (it's why I stopped watching long ago.)
I think it's also valid to admit though, that models who insist on looking only one particular way are pigeonholing themselves to a certain extent, limiting their own careers. Unless you're in the top tier, models usually don't get to call the shots (except to quit if they don't want to do something.) There are thousands of other jobs in the world to be done that aren't centered on how you look.

I understand that and will make an effort to not use that word casually. Thanks for sharing your experience. I do think it can be harmful and this show typically seemed to push the envelope in terms of what is appropriate in a work environment just because it's a form of "show business" and therefore folks should be prepared to put up with ANYTHING to advance their career. I don't think this is a healthy thing to promote or enforce in a competition setting where many contestants are competing to provide for their families or themselves, leaving their families and being tested in varying levels of intense treatment. The normalization starts on episode 1 when they cut their hair without trying to choose a cut that is authentic to the person. They would consistently choose styles that were the opposite of how they felt comfortable. As a kid I thought this was the pull them out of their box, but as an enby adult I see it as harmful to these folks whether they stay in the competition or not. I hope this makes sense and used sensitive language so you can relate without feeling the intensity of the other word I used. Sorry again and sending you much love.

I get where Cherish is coming from, but I feel like people try to scare redheads into never dying their hair because they're gonna "ruin" it. As a redhead I would dye my hair just cause people would tell me not to, I've done blacks, browns, other reds, have bleached parts of my hair. When I shaved my head it all came back the same colour my hair naturally was, I don't think hair dyes ruins your genetics so therefore once it fully grows out you should have your natural colour back.

I would dye my hair so many different colors if I was not a ginger. The only time I’ve ever dyed my hair was 7 years ago when I dyed a very small piece behind my ear with Demi permanent color, and it has never been *quite* the same since. That piece is not as vibrantly ginger as it was before; it has an almost ashy quality to the color in that spot, like it has lost some of its luster. Normally, my hair really glints in the sun as if it’s actual copper, but the hair in that spot just doesn’t as much. It’s not noticeable unless I point it out, but I still wouldn’t want the rest of my hair to loose a little bit of the shimmer that makes it so pretty. I don’t know how or why this happened to the hair I dyed, but it sadly did. If I ever did it again, I would definitely avoid my roots, though, because I think I remember feeling a slight burning sensation, so maybe that has something to do with it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think she was afraid they were going to make her look more generic, and Brad may not have seen the difference, but imo it *did* look more artificially red in the “after” photo.

    • @kandieharrison4055

@@Emnms68 Depending on what color you dyed it, it probably just toned your hair. For example, any color that's opposite red/orange/yellow, will turn your hair into a more cool toned shade. So purples, blues and greens can do this, as well as using ash toned colors. The new baby hairs would grow back normally, but it may have toned the existing hair, which if it hasn't washed out yet, then it probably will remain toned. Also with it loosing it's glint or vibrancy, it could be damage, but you said Demi permanent, so I doubt the color damaged your hair. I took color theory in school and there are a few videos of Brad's that talk about color theory pertaining to hair colors.

Natural redheads DO tend to have a lot of natural highlights and lowlights that are noticeable. Yeah, you can grow it back, but it takes FOREVER for some people to grow back a full head of hair, and it will look like shit growing back due to how her hair sunbleaches. They took that uniqueness of her hair away from her for years and made her look like a fake ginger instead. She could ABSOLUTELY work in that field with her natural hair. I just wanted to say... Red heads are super duper special!! I'm a hairstylist and when I see a natural red head my heart pounds literally stunning... I disagree with Brad here red heads have very special color of hair that can't be replicated... I was so sad to see them ruin it

I 100% agree. I hated my natural red color growing up because I got bullied so I died it dark colors for year and it is so hard to get back. It took hours for a color correction and now like 5 years later, I finally have my natural auburn red back. Every time I think about doing something even just to add dimension I second guess it because I’m like is it going to mess it up?

OMG, I actually just wrote how I kinda got her feelings. Regarding your comment, yes dye is such a dud on natural red hair - as a guy, there's no such thing as ginger 'Just For Men', so I took their Sandy Blonde ( their very lightest) as an experiment - it got me so dark that it made me look like Alfalfa from The Little Rascals. And it never gets out until you cut it. I'm happy to be back to natural with the oranges, golds and silvers.

Lies. The red heads hair looks so much better before. Light, natural, effortless and powerful. Now it’s darker, drabber, more solid/ fake, with so much less depth… I’d be balling if I was her… there’s no going back to what it was without years and years of growth…..

@@maryfrail2292 in this context it's when someone is gender neutral in their appearance, where at first glance you can't identify if their features are masculine or feminine. It's more than just chopping a girl's hair short into a boyish cut...but nobody seems to have told that to the ANTM producers.

@mary fail - for me androgynous means someone like Annie Lennox's look in the 1980s, she defined that word.

As a natural red head I completely understand her reaction, personally, growing up, I have always felt that it is a major part of who I am. I also feel that it could be her reaction to the things she has been told growing up. For example, I have always been told not to cut or dye it(even when I have directly expressed my desire to), by not only my family and friends, but also random strangers. I have also had people be horrible to me about it (ex. I have been told to go to hell by a stranger for no reason) and although no one in my circle has ever said anything about it, it is always something that has made me feel somewhat out of place. I have had to learn how to like my hair and I feel it may have been the same for her. So for them to tell her that her hair is not red enough is just mean. In her situation I would have felt better about them dying my hair black than telling me my natural hair that no one else can get (not even in a bottle) is not good enough. (Sorry for the rant but unless you are a redhead, you probably don't understand the full emotional weight the color holds)

They really did everyone dirty this season. Whoever chose those looks should be fired. It's one thing to do something "for the drama," it's another to trash people's hair and purposefully sabotage their career. Tyra was at least trying to elevate their look, even when they didn't like it, and she was willing to admit when she made mistakes and get them fixed (except the gap widening which remains inexcusable). Not to mention, for the industry, when you're trying to break in you do NOT want a signature look, especially one that's too edgy, modern, or high maintenance. You're meant to be a blank canvas and when you prove you have the chops, then you get to dictate your style.
Also, going to say, Cherish was totally correct to hate her look. There was no need to do anything but possibly darken her brows and give her a couple layers. Redheads STILL get bullied for their looks, and leaving her hair alone would have been a positive message for the audience. But, hey, at least we got some drama?
