I got this vacuum yesterday and hooked it up per the video instructions. It worked well. The vacuum is more powerful than a siphon vac of which I have a couple. I tried to make my own power vac using a pump but my sand substrate would foul it almost immediately. I have a huge plec that is a crap factory and the siphon tubes will not pick up the heavier waste. This vac gets it no problem. The nice thing is that I don't have to worry about buckets and running out of time before they fill. You can vacuum all day with this system. I got the super fine sock and it did not let any sand into my fx6. This system has a fair amount of parts but in my opinion worth the small extra hassle setting it up since it does a much better job. I still do water changes but I see myself vacuuming every few days and weekly water changes on a day that I don't vacuum. We will see how it works.
Got my vac yesterday.....So easy to use and setup.....Sat there for bout an half hour getting every nook n cranny of my gravel.....Best thing ever....Thanks Fluval!!!!!!!!
I've been using a python for years and if you just want to wash the gravel and not perform a water change this is a simple and easy tool to use. The FX6's Motor is powerful and washes the gravel effectively even with the extension tube attached. For a water change I will still use the Python and wash the gravel at the same time but for intermittently clean up this product works perfectly. The key is not to let your tank waste build up and this product encourages you to frequently wash your gravel effectively with its quick attachment and minimal mess. I purchased the FX6 on its own but this is a great attachment that utilizes the FX6's drain feature and powerful motor..........nice job Fluval. P.s. For those who are complaining about it not being free....get real, all you have to pay for is shipping.
I'm from UK, i've had mine a few weeks now, started using mine yesterday, i don't like using the end that goes into the gravel i just tilt the bottom tube a little and the gravel sucks up the tube and spins up and down until you lift the tube, what i do is move gravel from one end of the tank (about 12 Inches) so it leaves a space, when rubbish has settled clean the space you have made then put the tube into the gravel, tilt the tube a little and you will see the gravel going up and down, then after a few seconds drag the tube across the floor of the tank where you have made a space, lift the tube a few inches, tilt the tube about 45 degrees and the gravel will slide out of the tube, then repeat until all gravel cleaned, JOB DONE. i must also add, watch how much gravel you put into tube-s, if you put too much in, it goes up to the gravel stop and blocks water/gravel going up the pipe, if it does just move the lever at the top of the tubes and gravel will slide down tube, turn lever back. i'm really impressed with this gravel cleaner, the hose is a little awkward when moving cleaning tube-s around tank, could do with a flexi- hose, also the pulling power of the gravel cleaner through my FX6 is very powerful that's why i said be careful how much gravel you put in the tubes. I hope Fluval offer me a job after this honest review, LOL.
Hi David, no reason not to use it in saltwater. In fact it makes a great vacuum for cleaning live rock surfaces, helps pull out fine debris that can clog pores etc...As for a sand substrate you do have the convenience of the filter bag within the filtration model of the FX Gravel Vac.
People don't quite seem to understand the idea of this. First you do the gravel cleaning with this. Then you can put the hose into a bucket, turn the filter off, and open the utility valve. The water will then siphon into the bucket. Since you have a standard quick connector at the end you can of course also extend the hose to a drain if you want to, as long as the drain is lower than the lowest level you wish to drop your tank to. This is way it will completely eliminate the need to carry buckets, at least for the emptying and cleaning.
Well if you really know what you doing you can use a hose and use the same basic logic of siphoning water out of your tank into your sink you don't need buckets and you don't need the fx6 to power the gravel back it's simple physics why is everything to be made so complicated.
@@maxeffortsall of these things are easier to get 7 years later and then again I don't care if you are going to get some clarity for why this one has been great for CLEANING UP THE Bottom of aquarium substrates and I will take a moment to mention that it is a healthy and established aquarium, and the waste , uneaten food etc. that are going to be vacuumed out in a younger set-up before the colonies of beneficial bacteria have been given the chances to complete the process just make sure to do smaller areas over the course of a week or two and not all @ once. So that's why you are not working with the Python or any buckets because you are cleaning and not water changing . Just wanted to make sure 7 years ago was long enough to come to the optimal way to go without losing a drop of stable H2O but not saying that you would not have to do water changes . Sweet and not all that but FLUVAL 2as and still is Phat , word to ya Motha 🫣😂
Hello. I can’t understand it myself and I can’t find information anywhere about the suction cups that come with the filter; these are the suction cups that are in the bag with hose clamps. Do you know what these suction cups are for and where to install them?
Hi there! The small suction cups included with FX Series filters are for the rim connectors. Check section 3.2 of "INSTALLATION AND USE" in the instruction manual! 👍
purchased mine a few days ago, great addition to my Fluval canister. I have a reef tank with a sand bed, Should I throw out the sand that's collected in the bag.
Nice concepts, but by the time u hook that up to everything I would’ve been done. I like to gravel clean and drain the water through the syphon as I clean the gravel.
Joel, understood but important to consider that hook up takes places once, you can leave it connected to your FX filter. The filter bag is what you would access to clean relatively regularly.
Just bought this and tried it today --what a mess it made of my water and hardly any suction...and yes I did follow all the instructions. I had my husband then do it and double check we had done it right. Siphon and bucket worked better. Can I get my money back???
This function makes no sense because your putting the same water back in, might as well use a Python and put clean water back in, that's the purpose of a water change....
+KG cichlids depends on what your trying to accomplish... If it actually catches a majority of the detritus then it would give you a unlimited amount of time to throughly clean your substrate. Depending on size of your tank water changes give u 5-10 mins max to get it done.. Makes you rush the job IMO.. Ether way we will find out when someone else reviews this
+CJ'S AQUARIUMS still seems like a little too much, but I do see the function and how it can be great. You bring up a good point in taking the time to clean your tank instead of being rushed.
+CJ'S AQUARIUMS my Python takes almost an hour to drain mine completely. It's a 135, but what most of us fish keepers can agree on is stick to your best routine and keep consistent.
+KG cichlids no doubt! Not saying I'll ever use this but still doesn't blind me to the possible Benefits of doing so. Pros and cons to everything... As u said to each his own
I was under the assumption you could use this with the filter while the filter was running normally (doing its filtering job), but looks like the person with turning the inlet valve on and off? Do you need to disconnect the filter from the tank to use the vac??
The FX gravel vac connects to the purge valve which then serves as the inlet to the filter, so no, it is not a function that goes on during regular operation as the inlet side of the filter is turned off.
I'd very much like to know if there is a similar product for the 307 Cannister filter, I'd very much love to ditch the weak little electric thing I bought, as it doesn't seem to do well for 5 goldfish in a 55 gallon tank.... Oddly.
Hi Pat! There isn't a way to perform both actions at the same time while using the FX Gravel Vac. First you clean the gravel, and afterwards you can drain the tank! 👍
Hello, I've recently acquired the fx gravel vac by Fluval. Could you please tell me if the filter should be running (power on) while doing the vacuuming? Thanks in advance.
I change about 50 gallons of water weekly on my 75 gallon discus tank so I always have fresh water. However, my water pressure is horrible so I can never properly clean the substrate. This looks like it would fit the bill for me even though there is alot going on in this contraption. Can't find anywhere to buy it in the states though.
As a suggestion if the gravel vac seems confusing, just think of it as an in line filter media bag in a housing. That said it should be available in the USA soon, please use the link included for fluvalaquatics USA and click on the dealer locator option at the bottom of the page: www.fluvalaquatics.com/us/home/
The intake tube looks like it was pre-primed as there is obviously water in the gravel vac prior to turning on the gravel vac valve. How do you prime it?
There is water present because of the use of the gavel washer, there is no priming involved, the filter is primed, the gravel washer system is connected to the filter which aspirates the water through it.
Does Fluval make a replaceable outlet tube with a single nozzle? If not, can anyone prove a DIY to replace it with a single outlet nozzle? I don't like the double nozzle head on the output hose. Thanks...
Hi John, it is widely available at Fluval retailers in markets that carry it. Please visit fluvalaquatics.com and select your country, you may contact the support team via the support page.
I like this product so much I think you should have a can the size of my fx4 with a giant fine pad so I can have it running all the time I find myself taking my time when cleaning the tank now
Is it my imagination or does it look like you open the drain valve, and close the intake? Does the drain suck water through it when the intake side is closed? Seems something that could produce a mess and shorten life of the motor if I didn't see that correctly?
Hi Adam, no, you are not imagining this ;) The motor is unaffected as the incoming water and debris are filtered through the filter media as it would be had it entered via the intake. In fact, messes are conveniently avoided when gravel washing this way. We cover this in the video.
Filter disassembly is not required, all you have to do is conveniently lift the filter media baskets out using the T handles after opening the canister.
I've discovered that to take quite a while. Then I always have to pull the pump or any sand grains etc that may have got pulled in since last cleaning tend to not allow the canister to start very well. Perhaps it is better meant for gravel substrate vs sand substrate tanks.
I just got the FX4 and I'm looking around for replacement parts just because I like to have them on hand. I cant find a replacement IMPELLER nor can I find this Vacuum. Where do I get them. They are not even on the Fluval Site.
Hi Mike, good idea, to locate a dealer please visit the Fluvalaquatics.com site, select your country for the right version and then click on the dealer locator version, they will help you out. Spare parts are available in USA and Canada on fluvalaquatics.com, for other locations please contact our offices which can be done on line.
I have been doing that almost daily and they do not list the Impeller or the Vac. These are NOT available on fluvalaquatics.com, eBal, Amazon, or anywhere else. They don't exist.
it's more work if you don't have the extra hook-up but you can do the same thing with your current canister filter if you just simply disconnect it the input hose an connect your gravel vac an not pay that money ijs
Thanks for sharing but....you would have to also make sure there is no chance of substrate entering the impeller chamber as well as making sure that the hosing on your gravel washer fits the intake of your canister. Let us also not forget that the Fluval FX gravel vac system comes with its own filter module and media bags for extra fine filtration and easy replacement. which you would not on your existing canister filter and would be taxing your existing canister filter media more vs. the FX gravel vac system.
We understand, noted that you are offering a suggestion, nothing wrong with that, we just want to ensure that everyone understands the details. That said we are launching this item as a promotion with the purchase of an FX 4 or 6, stay tuned for more information in the coming months.
Looks real nice when cleaning a tank that was set up for this vid. Try that again on a filter that is 3 months in. I guarantee the water won’t be that clear. I connected the hose and as soon as it sucked some air in, the outlet blew a huge brown cloud. Is there a fix for that or will I have to put a filter sock on the outlet too.
Regular maintenance does include removing the hose assembly and rinsing them through thoroughly, from your description that event is not related to the use of the gravel vac.
Fluval Aquatics just for the sake of argument, I did pass a tube cleaning brush through the hoses. I’m guessing the issue is when air gets in the filter, it loosens the crap that’s built up then blowing it back into the tank. So I’ll have to upgrade the fine filter pads and or put a fine filter sock over the outtake tube. 🤷🏻♂️
I am thinking about buy your fx4 for my 40gallon breeders I just bought. I am using 206 and aqua clear 110 on all my fish tanks. But now I have a total of 8 tanks which is a lot when it comes to doing water changes and cleaning my canisters and hobs. Dont get me wrong i love my fish, but i rather spend more time enjoying my fish than cleaning so many fliters. how long is the hose? can you add a 25ft hose to the area to add water from the sink? Or do I have a hose from the sink going into a bucket and the hose from the fx in there, to take the water out? I hate using the python because of the wasted water.
The FX Gravel Vac is the perfect solution to not wasting water when cleaning gravel as the debris is caught in the handy included filter bag, just clean and replace that as necessary. The filter bag in this system keeps the debris out of the filter too.
Casey, you will be pleased to know that there have been none. The drain valve has always been a great feature of the FX canister and has been problem free. The Gravel Vac is supplied with quick fit locking connectors, once the aquarium gravel has been maintained the drain valve eliminates any potential issue by closing it as one would normally do for any reason had they had previously opened it.
hows this better then a cheap 20$ python kit that does the same thing? plus those tubes look small like it would take 2 hours to gravel vac a 180 gallon
They are totally different systems. The python uses large quantities of tap water to pull water from your aquarium, in fact environmentally this is an issue. The FX gravel vac uses the filter motor to pull debris from the gravel into a filter bag where it is easily removed, no wastage of clean tap water to do a gravel washing.
Fluval Aquatics well you work for the company so you're gonna debate this forever as I can too easily I have tried both and the python is absolutely better. too many issues with this device, it's a great idea needs to be refined a lot.
I was going to order this as part of the promo with the purchase of the FX6, however, after watching this video, I realize it will not work for me since I decided to go with sand in my 125G aquarium.
Sand is not an issue as the water does pass through a filter bag which would trap it in case you have not used the control valve in the way it was demonstrated.
Hi Fluval, I recently bought the Fluvial FX4 and it came with a coupon for the gravel vac. The catch is it recently expired a few months ago. We bought it at the local Pet Smart. Is there anyway we can still redeem the gravel vac?
I have contacted the support team on Fluval's support webpage. It has been 1 week and I have not received a reply yet. Is it possible something has gone wrong. Thank you.
Alex, the fact that it is so easy to use with the thumb flow control, absolutely, you can return the sand to the bottom very effectively thanks to this effective and easy to use control feature.
Still unclear to me whether or not the pump is running and then you close the inlet and open the syphon valve or you get it all set up and then turn it on. Welp I guess I’m gonna learn here. Got an extra towel handy
Fluval Aquatics So what you're saying then is that I should restart the pump once it is all set up. In this scenario you will be standing around with the syphon in your hand while it does the normal auto purge. I guess that's not a huge issue.
No we are not actually, we were only suggesting a thought to help you understand the simplicity of how this works. The purge you are referring to is suggested in the video to allow air trapped to escape, if we are on the same page here....
We clearly are not. I understand how it works. I am talking about the filter's operation ... when you plug it in, it runs for a few seconds and then stops for like a minute. I was able to succesfully use the filter other than the fact that the little white dome screen got clogged after a minute and then there was basically no flow to continue syphoning.
Rusty, thanks, yes this auto stop delay does this once every 12 hrs. to allow any trapped air to be evacuated out of the filter. Simply unplug and re-plug, the filter will continue operation. The white screen at the top of the gravel washer is a gravel guard which unless there is a lot of larger debris should not plug as you are now set up to regularly keep the substrate free of it.
In the filter box you should have found a coupon or a Fluval Card with a code to be able to register on line at fluvalaquatics.com and have it shipped to you.
well I'll be damnded.. that's pretty awesome. good job fluval.. no wonder i, as well as millions of others love your products. really want one of these filters. but pretty sure it'd be overkill on a 55g lol
Hi Anthony, the FX Gravel Vac is not sold separately at this time, but for a limited time, it is available for free (shipping charges do apply) through a special promotion with the purchase of specially-marked boxes of the new FX4 or improved FX6 filtration systems. Each box comes with a unique PIN code that you use for your order.
I just order an FX6 through Amazon but I'm not sure I'll be able to get one with the code, I've asked around at local stores and they either have no knowledge of this promotion or also say that they can't guarantee that if I bought one it would have the promotional code. so, my question is then, when is the expected release date for this product to be sold separately, and what will the MSRP be?
Hi Anthony, the specially-marked FX6 filters, which include a PIN code to order a free FX gravel vac is currently available across some Canadian outlets, but whether your local retailer is carrying it is not a question we can answer. If they don't have inventory, they could perhaps order it for you. Item #219. Take note however, that we cannot guarantee they will receive the 'specially-marked box.'
Please check with your local aquatics retailers or online retailers in your area! You can contact our customer support team for assistance finding the item near you: fluvalaquatics.com/us/contact-us/
Later part of 2017? Why so long? Seems that if it is already being offered as a promo that manufacturing is already setup. Plus contrary to this video description it is only being offered through promo with the FX4 (confirmed through your customer service department) I only run the FX6 which it is compatible with and IMHO is the best canister filter currently produced albeit a tad on the expensive side. Purchased 2 of them in the past 2 months and currently have 8 of them running and two backups.. So the only way to get one of these is to wait a year or buy a very expensive filter that I don't want....IF you can actually find one of the promo units at your LFS. None currently at ANY local shop within 100 miles. I think Fluval has failed with their marketing on this one. I will just build my own.
Hi Matthew, we apologize for any confusion and were mistaken. To clarify, with the purchase of specially marked FX4 and FX6 filters, the promotional FX Gravel Vac is available for free (shipping charges apply). The specially marked FX4 filters will already be on the store shelves, whereas the specially marked FX6 models may not have arrived on the store shelves depending on your country and location. The standard FX Aquavac Kit (Item A370) for all FX4, FX6 and FX5 filter models will now be available as a separate item in most countries come late 2016. You are best to contact your local retailer or our customer service team in your country for more information as that time approaches.
Hey Orlando, works great with a sand substrate as the thumb operated flow control allows you slow the intake flow way down, so it is really easy to return the sand to the bottom without having any be pulled out of the tank.
A high tech and I assume high dollar solution for a simple task. Fish keeping is fun and has its rewards. Don’t let your hobby become a money pit. Fluval has wonderful products but sometimes it’s a bit much. Just my opinion.
A couple of observations: 1) The effort to use this vacuum system is a lot more effort than simply vacuuming off the dirt, sludge and detritus into a drain. 2) Good aquarium hygiene requires the sludge, dirt and detritus from gravel cleaning to be removed from the aquarium system. Granted some is captured in the filter bag, but a lot of this waste goes back into the FX filter which appears to be connected to, and circulate water back to the aquarium. Looks like a fancy "toy" that will not help the aquarium inhabitants.
A filter bag is employed to capture debris as it passes up the Vac, and very little (if any) ends up in your filter. We supply 2 filter bags (fine and super fine), which actually provides even greater polishing than most filter media. The advantage is that you are using a strong pump (the FX itself), which allows greater flexibility for more applications with a gravel washer and provides total control over the use. From sand to very coarse gravel, there is no issue when using this super handy washer. We feel given the great convenience and effectiveness of this product, it will encourage people to perform regular maintenance, thereby benefiting aquarium inhabitants.
danny gilez it is a lot of messing around and if done wrong can over flow your tank and break your canister the instructions suck and can’t figure out how to use properly with out messing every thing up
This should be available at your local Fluval retailer. You can always reach out to Fluval for additional support by visiting fluvalaquatics.com and selecting your country, then the support page, the Fluval team can help you locate the FX gravel vac.
Okay guys anyone needing an open and honest assessment about this vac. It works as the video describes but after vacuuming and turning the valves of the filter back on, it kicks back suet and foul water back into the water literally everytime. Totally defeats the object. Very frustrating. I have used the vac 4 times and each time follow this video step by step. Shame really because it's a great bit of kit as is the FX6 filter. Anyone with similar issues? I will not be using the vac again. The reason this happens is because the sock in the collection canister is designed to collect waste and fine pieces (and does a very good job at doing so) But obviously the suet and cloudy muck isn't going to be collected by the sock, so your canister fills up with this cloudy disturbed muck only to be released as a toxic bath straight back into your tank when you switch the valves back to the on position. Maybe lots of fine polishing floss would help catch some of it but either way it's inevitable you will mess your tank up with this. Please feel free to correct or advise me. The FX6 is the best filter on the market but the vac would only work properly if the water you were siphoning leaves the tank permanently :)
Hi Colin, likely the reason you are having debris entering your aquarium after opening or closing a valve is due to the accumulated debris in the ribbed hosing of the filter. We suggest removing the hosing the next time you perform filter maintenance and giving the hoses a thorough flush with fresh tap water. We have not observed what you are describing. The filter traps the waste and particles, it does not enter the filter.
Unfortunately, because of the suet is not leaving the tank your pump will inevitably kick out all the murky water back into the tank when those valves are turned back to normal flow :(
Fluval Aquatics, I only here negative feed back on the ribbed tubes for intake and output, could you guys make a kit available to replace to a standard silicone tube or will we have to resort to DIY somthing?
Hi Aaron my issue has nothing to do with the piping. It's the fact that when siphoning, all the muck from the gravel gets pumped straight back into the water, because the finer pieces do not get collected into the vac's sock. Many of people with the same issues.
Hi Jose Eduardo, the new FX4 and FX6 canister filtration systems are currently available in select EU countries, while a North American launch is planned for Fall 2016. The FX Gravel Vac will be offered free of charge for a limited time, and only with the purchase of specially marked boxes of the new FX4 or FX6 filter. This promotional offer is only available in North America and certain EU countries (details can be found at point of purchase). Customers located outside of these participating areas are asked to contact their local Fluval distributors for specific FX filter and Gravel Vac release dates.
To clarify further, with the purchase of specially marked FX4 and FX6 filters, the promotional FX Gravel Vac is available for free (shipping charges do apply however). The specially marked FX4 filters will already be on the store shelves whereas the specially marked FX6 models may not have arrived on the store shelves depending on your country and location. Interesting concept... but I'd rather dump all that gravel gunk out the door and off the deck with a hose instead of trying to filter it out with a canister filter. I was amazed you could do that though.
Hi Janis, please use our dealer locator function on the German fluvalaquatics.com website, here is the link for your convenience; www.fluvalaquatics.com/de/fluval-handlersuche/
We do offer gravel washers/Vacs for partial water changes, this device has its own filter module and uses the filter to power it. Once connected you can leave it connected. Convenient and effective for some extra cleaning capacity..
We regularly use it on display aquariums with fine sand, with proper control of the flow control lever at the top of the gravel washer you avoid doing that.
Carnt wait to pick up one of these! Well done fluval...The bonus with this gravel vac is if your gravel gets bad you can remove ALL the waste and still have total control of the amount of water you take from the tank. To big a water change for certain fish is no good. This is a very good idea. Fluval is there any news when this will be sold on its own. I want asap plz.👍😎

The speed of assembly is just so 2/3 of ♥️U🤍S💙 that watch this channel are lacking enough common sense to follow , or just swallowed a little to much dirty tank water 🐚🐌🦐🦂
@@stoneysscapes7544 That's a lot of emojis. I have no idea if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me, the video, or Fluval. I use a python system to service all my tanks in a big room...if someone did not have a python, maybe this would be a good option too. I was remarking on the dis-ease of assembly.
Was thinking the same. Looks like more trouble than it’s worth not to mention trying to tinker with an FX 6 in the limited space of an aquarium cabinet.
Looks good .. its a shame after all that tech you have to rinse out the filter sock with your fingers in a sink ... i see disposable filterbags in the future ... like coffee filter bags etc ... can i get a Fluval t shirt for my idea ? 🐠
I would just buy a cheap canister filter and attach a gravel tube to the end. You could pay about thirty dollars all together for a great unit. Instead of hundreds.
You are not comparing a filter of the same caliber, capacity or capability vs and FX series, we felt that needed to be mentioned in regards to your comment.
@@fluval All im saying is that this attachment is not really gamechanging to the FX series. Countless other people have done this by simply removing the filter input and adding a gravel vac tube to it to accomplish the same purpose for any size tank they have. Not to mention sutch a prestigious company as fluval blasted me for a personal opinion. I simply dont understand why you guys just wouldnt invent a gravel vac intake attachment.
Fluval Aquatics. I am located in Cleveland Ohio I just purchased the fx4 will be delivered tomorrow not sure if it will come with one I'm assuming not but that looks like a handy tool
Dennis, if the FX 4 is one that has the promotional offer than you will be invited to submit a coupon on line. the FX6 is a great cannister filter, mine has been running for several months perfectly..but honestly this 'feature' seems gimmicky. There is no alternative to water changes for your aquarium - filtering water through a sock does not change that fact. I have a $5 hose connected to my $10 gravel cleaner which i siphon onto my lawn - i wouldnt change that process if Fluval offered me this system for free.
Hi R Ram, the water change feature does not actually employ the Vac, but rather the utility valve. Please watch our other FX video - look around the 4 minute mark. ua-cam.com/video/D_k9SMR5zQY/v-deo.html
yea i watched that.. again, much more work than just using a simple siphon hose. if you have a 250Gallon tank you would not do water changes with a short hose into a bucket!
Each to his own. Far too much effort and trouble for me. Regular "gravity" pump siphon is all I need. Simple and clean. No moving parts, etc. Nice try though.
this is a good idea but the part that Fluval ether does or dose'nt relies is that. yes this is a canister filter that stays on the tank with an external vac system(cool idea). but after you vac that gravel it stays inside the filter( and they have a prefilter I saw that it was just a mesh net needs to be a small micron filter sock to be effective) and you then need to open it up and clean it. otherwise its brakes down in the filter releasing the same nutrients into the tank thus doing nearly nothing to begin with. also understand I'm talking from a saltwater perspective, and this seems to be ok for freshwater. but nearly useless for Marine
Couple of points to clarify for you. The filter sock is located before the incoming water to the filter (two sizes available, fine and super fine), it is not a mesh but a filter bag that traps very fine particles. When the cleaning is complete, remove bag and rinse thoroughly or replace, no nutrients or decomposition the next time it is used. Secondly, it is great for marine use, for both substrate and for suction cleaning the surfaces of live rock which do become plugged with organic waste, this unit uses the power of this filter to pull dirt from even fine live rock pores and traps it in the filter sock where it is removed from the system entirely. Very beneficial for marine where organic accumulation needs to be controlled and dealt with through maintenance.
Although the "doing" video is somewhat easy enough to follow along, I think it would be of great help to actually (verbally) explain the set up/break down assembly process. Assuming is never a good thing!!
Once you try it you would see just how straight forward it is....the filter media back in the module traps the debris. While the Python is effective you are using a lot of tap water every time you use it, with the FX gravel vac you are using the motor which is already running to filter your aquarium and using a filter bag to trap waste in the gravel.
Fluval Aquatics But... if you turn the water off once the syphon has started, you're wasting very little... with the added bonus of everything going down the drain and out of the system... plus, you're removing old water at the same time... which is also part of required maintenance... Not knocking the filter, I wish I had one (even knowing I'd never vacuum my gravel with it), but for substrate cleaning, the python probably is a more straight forward operation, while saving a step towards water changes.
that isnif your stupid faucet allows you to connect a python to it, me personaly my sink hasnno way for that so i got this, havent used it yet just got it, but if you cant use a python the why not?
OK, I finally got my vac, hooked it up to my FX4 per the instructions and was very disappointed in the suction. Did not vac the gravel good at all and had very poor flow. My Cobalt vac is much better.
Nice to see a very easy, non rushed and straightforward demonstration, without making any assumptions about the level of knowledge of those watching.
We're glad you enjoyed the video!
Hellish Underwater Harmonica so true
I just bought the fx6 for my 250 gallon absolutely love it!! Now I definitely need this.
got one free with my fx6. can't wait to give it a try. thanks fluval
Thanks for sharing your detailed protocol, sounds very thorough!
very good IKEA-style video! No words but everything explained
Great product works amazingly well, wish I had brought it months ago, big TICK Fluval
I have the fx6 and was wondering if this is also for saltwater aquariums with live sand substrate?
You got it!
I NEED this to be released in the UK NOW!!! :)
I have a brand new one never used, can sell for a fair price and post if you like.
I am interested - can you PM me with details?
not sure how to on youtube Ian? can you msg me?
I'm hiring your DJ for my next party. Fluval is too cool for school!
purchased mine a few days ago, great addition to my Fluval canister. I have a reef tank with a sand bed, Should I throw out the sand that's collected in the bag.
You can rinse the sand and return it to the aquarium, no need to replace it for that reason.
@@fluval thank you
Nice concepts, but by the time u hook that up to everything I would’ve been done.
Glynis, sorry to hear of this, please visit fluvalaquatics.com, select your country and reach out to the fluval support team via the support page.
Nice idea! Looking forward to seeing this reviewed by people on the hobby...
Oddly.
Hi, at this time we do not offer a comparable product for our 07 line of canisters. I will forward your suggestion to our product development team. 😊
Is there a way to hook to the FX6 and clean gravel while also siphoning some water off for the water change?
Hi Pat! There isn't a way to perform both actions at the same time while using the FX Gravel Vac. First you clean the gravel, and afterwards you can drain the tank! 👍
Does the filter need to be powered on to use the gravel vac
Hello, I've recently acquired the fx gravel vac by Fluval. Could you please tell me if the filter should be running (power on) while doing the vacuuming? Thanks in advance.
Hi Gerardo, yes! The filter should be on, that's how the FX Gravel Vac is powered! 👍
Awesome...Cant wait til i get mine. Can take my time sucking all the waste up in my tank without having to worry about my buckets over filling....
Either siphon out the window, or use a Python. You don't have to use buckets to do clean or do water changes.
Fancy this for my fx4
The intake tube looks like it was pre-primed as there is obviously water in the gravel vac prior to turning on the gravel vac valve. How do you prime it?
There is water present because of the use of the gavel washer, there is no priming involved, the filter is primed, the gravel washer system is connected to the filter which aspirates the water through it.
Is it normal for the fx to drop the level in your tank after you’ve used it to refill or used the fx gravel vac?
Hi there! Please feel free to contact our customer support team about this: fluvalaquatics.com/us/contact-us/
Does Fluval make a replaceable outlet tube with a single nozzle? If not, can anyone prove a DIY to replace it with a single outlet nozzle? I don't like the double nozzle head on the output hose. Thanks...
Fluval does not offer a single output nozzle option. You might consider selecting a suitable sized PVC elbow that would fit the rubber connector.
@@fluvalThanks. I purchased a PVC elbow.
Is this still something we can buy? Can't seem to find it anywhere online?
Hi John, it is widely available at Fluval retailers in markets that carry it. Please visit fluvalaquatics.com and select your country, you may contact the support team via the support page.
Do we really need this attachment? can't we just connect a python syphon and just let the waste to into the canister filter?
I like this product so much I think you should have a can the size of my fx4 with a giant fine pad so I can have it running all the time I find myself taking my time when cleaning the tank now
How often does the sock have to be replaced.?
It depends how dirty the aquarium is! We recommend replacing the vacuum bag after 2 uses, but you may be able to get more uses out of it than that.
I waste a lot of water doing water changes hopefully this helps
Is it normal for the fx to drop the level in your tank after you’ve used it to refill?
Is it my imagination or does it look like you open the drain valve, and close the intake? Does the drain suck water through it when the intake side is closed? Seems something that could produce a mess and shorten life of the motor if I didn't see that correctly?
Hi Adam, no, you are not imagining this ;) The motor is unaffected as the incoming water and debris are filtered through the filter media as it would be had it entered via the intake. In fact, messes are conveniently avoided when gravel washing this way. We cover this in the video.
Interesting! Now only if there was a way to squeeze out/clean the sponges without dissembling the canister! That's the only part I don't like. lol
Mike, where are you located?
You need to make hose adapters so we can use the UVC with the FX6
Hi Jason, a version of the UVC Clarifier compatible with the FX series is in development!
@@fluval very good
👍👍👍👍
What size is the hose I can't find the answer anywhere
Hi David! The ID of the FX Gravel Vac hosing is 5/8" / 16 mm. 👍
Would have liked to hear the steps being explained throughout the video.
it's more work if you don't have the extra hook-up but you can do the same thing with your current canister filter if you just simply disconnect it the input hose an connect your gravel vac an not pay that money ijs
Lol I ain't mad get that money how much is all this
We understand, noted that you are offering a suggestion, nothing wrong with that, we just want to ensure that everyone understands the details.
KoreanPolish*G-Man not sure what you decided on but you're way better off using a waterless gravel vac.
Has there been any leaking issues with this?seems like if there was a problem it will end very badly.
I got one for cost of shipping with new FX6. Sucks it is missing tubes to vac gravel. I waist of money without all parts.
Jay, make sure to contact support on fluvalaquatics.com it is supposed to arrive complete, they will look into the matter for you.
hows this better then a cheap 20$ python kit that does the same thing? plus those tubes look small like it would take 2 hours to gravel vac a 180 gallon
Fluval Aquatics and you're using the motor which I believe is plugged in and going to use electricity.
Fluval aquatic I just bought the fx6 but it did not come with the offer for the gravel vac is there any way I can get the offer
Where are you located?
Fluval Aquatics United States
I send a email to customer support a week ago have not heard back yet
Fluval Aquatics Can you help
I was going to order this as part of the promo with the purchase of the FX6, however, after watching this video, I realize it will not work for me since I decided to go with sand in my 125G aquarium.
Sand is not an issue as the water does pass through a filter bag which would trap it in case you have not used the control valve in the way it was demonstrated.
Hi Fluval,
I recently bought the Fluvial FX4 and it came with a coupon for the gravel vac. The catch is it recently expired a few months ago. We bought it at the local Pet Smart. Is there anyway we can still redeem the gravel vac?
Please contact the Fluval support team, access via fluvalaquatics.com support page is recommended.
Fluval Aquatics Ok! Thanks for replying.
I have contacted the support team on Fluval's support webpage. It has been 1 week and I have not received a reply yet. Is it possible something has gone wrong. Thank you.
Will this work on a 406 canister filter ?
It would not function exactly as per the intent of this model given the fact there is no purge value on any 06 series filter.
Can I vacuum sand with this?
Yes, but you'll need to be careful and regulate the flow a bit to make sure too much doesn't get sucked up!
please help was size is the tubing
Hello! The interior diameter of the FX Gravel Vac tubing is 5/8" / 16 mm. ✌
@fluval so if I was to buy this size hose it will be OK to but on to the drain tap at bottom for water changes
Do I leave my fx4 running when I vacuum or unplug it ? I don’t see anything about that. Thank you
Katrina, the FX Gravel Vac is powered by a FX filter in operation, please follow the detailed steps in this video with regards to how.
can you use this peice of kit with sand? with my manual one i have to hover over the top of the sand
Alex, the fact that it is so easy to use with the thumb flow control, absolutely, you can return the sand to the bottom very effectively thanks to this effective and easy to use control feature.
Thanks
I am about to order this ❤
Still unclear to me whether or not the pump is running and then you close the inlet and open the syphon valve or you get it all set up and then turn it on. Welp I guess I’m gonna learn here. Got an extra towel handy
It may help to imagine the drain valve as the substitute inlet valve and that you are using it as the inlet in the case of using the Gravel Vac.
The white screen at the top of the gravel washer is a gravel guard which unless there is a lot of larger debris should not plug as you are now set up to regularly keep the substrate free of it.
how do i get mine i just bought the fx4 and it says i get it free but i don't know how to do it
In the filter box you should have found a coupon or a Fluval Card with a code to be able to register on line at fluvalaquatics.com and have it shipped to you.
I have the most pooping gigantic pleco. This is most definitely easier than raking all the gravel out and rinsing it
well I'll be damnded.. that's pretty awesome. good job fluval.. no wonder i, as well as millions of others love your products. really want one of these filters. but pretty sure it'd be overkill on a 55g lol
I have it on a 90 and it works great!
I have it on my 40gal breeder.....works like a dream.....the flow is not a crazy as I thought.....
I have it on a 55 and it's no overkill it works perfectly!
Is this available in Canada yet? I'm planning on buying an FX6 soon and would really love this handy tool.
I just received my FX gravel vac. Pretty bad ass device so far.
Awesome to hear that! Thanks for the great feedback, Anthony.
What’s the name of the song???
Where can i order this from. Your website did not have it. Thank you
Please check with your local aquatics retailers or online retailers in your area! You can contact our customer support team for assistance finding the item near you: fluvalaquatics.com/us/contact-us/
I love mine works perfect does the job better then other vacumms
I tried it with sand substrate and it got clogged.
is this available for separate purchase? if so where can i find it?
Thank you for the info.
What about with a sand substrate ?
Hey Orlando, works great with a sand substrate as the thumb operated flow control allows you slow the intake flow way down, so it is really easy to return the sand to the bottom without having any be pulled out of the tank.
Fluval Aquatics Thanks
A high tech and I assume high dollar solution for a simple task. Fish keeping is fun and has its rewards. Don’t let your hobby become a money pit. Fluval has wonderful products but sometimes it’s a bit much. Just my opinion.
Who's the musician on this track. it's awesome
thanks for the great video!
Now do you make one for sand?
Using the integrated flow valve allows you to use it for sand as well.
Bit extreme isn't it?
Depends
If you have a 220 gallon tank, it is perfect but for just a 30 gallon, it is pretty overkill
Where can I find one. No body has in stock.
Which country are you located in?
A couple of observations: 1) The effort to use this vacuum system is a lot more effort than simply vacuuming off the dirt, sludge and detritus into a drain. 2) Good aquarium hygiene requires the sludge, dirt and detritus from gravel cleaning to be removed from the aquarium system. Granted some is captured in the filter bag, but a lot of this waste goes back into the FX filter which appears to be connected to, and circulate water back to the aquarium. Looks like a fancy "toy" that will not help the aquarium inhabitants.
Fluval should fire their engineers and hire you instead...
Fluval should delete this video and consider a bad dream they had in designing this.
Because you couldn't just add in some filter floss or finer filter material right.
I only received a single filter bag with mine
looks like it does a good job but also looks like a lot of messing around
danny gilez it is a lot of messing around and if done wrong can over flow your tank and break your canister the instructions suck and can’t figure out how to use properly with out messing every thing up
Apologize for being off topic, name or artist to the background beat?
Hi DeShawn, we grabbed that beat off of UA-cam's public playlist. Sorry we do not know the name or artist.
Pornhub
I like the content of the video as I have a FX6 but what's with the very loud background music.
Where can i buy this kit ?
This should be available at your local Fluval retailer. You can always reach out to Fluval for additional support by visiting fluvalaquatics.com and selecting your country, then the support page, the Fluval team can help you locate the FX gravel vac.
Fluval Aquatics I’m living in India 🇮🇳
Colin Forwood mine did the same exact thing!
Will this work with sand?
Yes is will but you will need to responsively work the flow thrumb control as sand is light and will rise quickly in the gravel tube.
where is it available ?
Hi Jose Eduardo, the new FX4 and FX6 canister filtration systems are currently available in select EU countries, while a North American launch is planned for Fall 2016. The FX Gravel Vac will be offered free of charge for a limited time, and only with the purchase of specially marked boxes of the new FX4 or FX6 filter.
This promotional offer is only available in North America and certain EU countries (details can be found at point of purchase). Customers located outside of these participating areas are asked to contact their local Fluval distributors for specific FX filter and Gravel Vac release dates.
Hi, yes, the FX Gravel Vac will be available for purchase next year.
The standard FX Aquavac Kit (Item A370) for all FX4, FX6 and FX5 filter models will be available separately in most countries come late 2016. You are best to contact your local retailer or our customer service team in your country for more information when that time comes.
Interesting concept... but I'd rather dump all that gravel gunk out the door and off the deck with a hose instead of trying to filter it out with a canister filter. I was amazed you could do that though.
Where to buy in germany? Need this!
Hi Janis, please use our dealer locator function on the German fluvalaquatics.com website, here is the link for your convenience; www.fluvalaquatics.com/de/fluval-handlersuche/
Who doesnt do their gravel vacs as a water change?
We do offer gravel washers/Vacs for partial water changes, this device has its own filter module and uses the filter to power it. Once connected you can leave it connected. Convenient and effective for some extra cleaning capacity..
Please show this system cleaning up fine play sand in a tank...the sand will simply get sucked up into the catch bag and fill it up in seconds.
We regularly use it on display aquariums with fine sand, with proper control of the flow control lever at the top of the gravel washer you avoid doing that.
I got the fx6 for my 20 gallon aquarium, big mistake
Carnt wait to pick up one of these! Well done fluval...The bonus with this gravel vac is if your gravel gets bad you can remove ALL the waste and still have total control of the amount of water you take from the tank.
To big a water change for certain fish is no good. This is a very good idea. Fluval is there any news when this will be sold on its own.
I want asap plz.👍😎
So which is it?:
I have purchased two fX6 recently and couldn't find the promo for either purchase so I have asked customer service about this twice because of this conflicting information.
New Message
Dear Matthew Kazee,
We thank you for taking the time to contact us.
The free gravel vac promo is when purchasing the FX4 only, not the FX6. I had explained that to you on your last contact with us as shown below:
Dear Matthew Kazee,
We thank you for taking the time to contact us.
The new FX gravel cleaner is available as a promotional offer only when purchasing the FX4 canister filter. It is not available seperately for sale at this time.
Thank you,

When purchasing the FX4 the promo coupon is packaged inside the filter lid.
I am unsure why the online reviews are stating the offer was received when purchasing the FX6.
I am sorry for the confusion.
Thank you,

I'm pretty sure I just cleaned my 55 gal tank in less time then you spent setting up this contraption.
The speed of assembly is just so 2/3 of ♥️U🤍S💙 that watch this channel are lacking enough common sense to follow , or just swallowed a little to much dirty tank water 🐚🐌🦐🦂

That's a lot of emojis.
We do recommend replacing the filter bags every few uses.
I simply dont understand why you guys just wouldnt invent a gravel vac intake attachment.
were can I purchase this
Dennis, where are you located?
Fluval Aquatics. I am located in Cleveland Ohio I just purchased the fx4 will be delivered tomorrow not sure if it will come with one I'm assuming not but that looks like a handy tool
Dennis, if the FX 4 is one that has the promotional offer than you will be invited to submit a coupon on line. Regardless you will be visiting fluvalaquatics.com, you can always select the USA site and use the dealer locator to find a retailer near you for the Gravel Vac. You may also use the contact options to reach out to our USA team if you need further help, they will gladly provide it.
the FX6 is a great cannister filter, mine has been running for several months perfectly..but honestly this 'feature' seems gimmicky.
How to make gravel vac 10 times more complex!
How is that more complex? You can gravel vac without having do a water change at the same time. Seems like a time saver to me, definitely getting one.
But you're not going to gravel vac I between waterchanges. So just do it with a waterchange. Alot less hassle and equipment.
I finished GV 5 mins ago
Wow! Is that simple or what?
I tink "or what".
Although the "doing" video is somewhat easy enough to follow along, I think it would be of great help to actually (verbally) explain the set up/break down assembly process.
Assuming is never a good thing!!
Hi Will, thanks for the suggestion! We'll keep that in mind for next time. 👍
Very confusing... I agree with Adam regarding the motor.... Just use a python for water changes and gravel cleaning. Leave your filter alone.
Awesome idea, but no way I would pay more than$30
OK, I finally got my vac, hooked it up to my FX4 per the instructions and was very disappointed in the suction. Did not vac the gravel good at all and had very poor flow. My Cobalt vac is much better.
We did well with the FX 4, perhaps you need to maintain your filter or perhaps you did not have the gravel washer thumb control at full open.
No, this was after the filter cleaning and the valve was wide open. I'll try again
just tried mine...nightmare - hardly sucked any gravel and the water went murky!! so angry and disappointed
I wish my FX6 came with one. Any samples to be had would greatly be appreciated.
