Harry Carpenter. One of the finest boxing commentators of his age. A one off. Old school, back when a public school and military background was seen as something to be proud of. He was extremely knowledgeable, and had a genuine interest in his subject and the people he was talking about. Life was somehow different then.
Kirkland was beating on him tenderizing him with the jab as then that body shot then boom he was tough wow because he had to take it and came back like woe I'm all shook up um hu
Colin Jones is arguably one of the unluckiest British World title challengers ever. He still did himself, and the British fighting public proud though, in admirable attempts for Milton McCrory's and Donald Curry's championships. Laing was an enigma, had undoubted talent......but was never world class!
@@peterflynn3669 Not really. Jones was lucky to challenge McCrory and Curry. A few years earlier and he'd have had to face Duran, Leonard or Hearns to win a welterweight world title.
Colin Jones is one of my favourite fighters and was so unlucky not to be world champion🙄 I have quite a few of his fights on DVD. Laing knew how to hurt his man, first hit him in the nuts, then hit him in the leg😚😖 Then Jones, the former electrician, sparked him out🥊😵💫
Colin Jones always had it all to do but he had persistence and Patience and above all KO Punching power 🥊. Well worthy of his world ranked top ten contendership he was that! good.✅. Still a very good achievement is that 👍✅🥊🏴
Laing shocked everyone with his win over Duran, but he was never the same after this last defeat to Jones. He had Jones reeling but he was wild, crafty and ignorant in his attempt to KO. God knows what his corner told him, looks like they were clueless, or Laing was simply stubborn, foolish and deluded in his ambition and let disaster repeat itself.
@@lofty92 We know Duran could have knocked Laings head clean off his shoulders on a good day with his legendary toe to toe inside work genius. Laing knew this, and was suddenly shitting himself when it dawned on him he was facing the mythical Panamanian beast at the start of the bout. He even asked his corner to slap him about to straighten him out a bit, a good thing they did, he focused like never before and it paid off. Durans main weakness was making weight, when he gets it wrong it totally screws up his energy level, concentration and attention span. He probably got it wrong here, thinking Laing was an easy touch. You can also see the awkwardness of Laings style frustrating and outfoxing him. Duran messed up again nearly 2 years later with his weight (after a brilliant battle against Hagler at middleweight moving back to super welterweight) to face Hearns, and paid dearly suffering a devastating KO, the worst loss of his career.
Harry was a good man ,but called fights wrong , start of the 9th he is suggesting laing could stop jones and if you watch Lucas v Sibson hes all lucas until sibson flattens him ...good man himself but should have not suggested outcomes .
@@peterbonning2455 we will never know...should of beaten mccrory...but run out of gas...the 2nd fight was a joke...fighting in that heat...clever of the yanks camp to have it then 👊
I watched these fights back in the day, so exciting. I met Colin Jones many years later in Cardiff, boyhood hero.
Two of the most underrated British boxers of all time
Especially Jones. At least Kirkland gets some recognition. Jones seems to get none at all.
Your not kidding.. boxing at it best all action..
Great fight . Two great fighters . Loved watching it.

a true gent - infectious enthusiasm for sport and always a scrupulously fair commentator
cardigan3000 Very well put. He even publicly regretted his “ Go on, Frank! “ moment at the Bruno Tyson bout.
Harry Carpenter was a British Institution. Pity about the other Harry involved here though..........Gibbs 🤨
@@Bazooka183 referee is john coyle
@@alanmacdonald4975 My mistake....unfortunately for me I lived through too many Harry Gibbs nights and became punch-drunk
Back when Britain had fighters unlike today's TV Celebrities in short's.
if there has been a tougher british boxer than Col i have yet to see him.
Kirkland was beating on him tenderizing him with the jab as then that body shot then boom he was tough wow because he had to take it and came back like woe I'm all shook up um hu
Enjoyed that - had both those fights on VHS for years, nice to see them on youtube :) - Thank you for putting them up :)
If you have full fights ? You should upload them mate.
Me too. I had 25 VHS tapes from the 80s and 90s.
@@davidcopson5800 Me too , just waiting till I retire when I have the time , few more years !
watched with my granda and colins punch was a great leveler a pleasure in rnd 9 again
One of the best body punchers in boxing Colin Jones and a great ambassador for the sport
And he's got him again! he's got him again!
Real Men Simple 70s 80s boxing 🥊 even amateurs were proper diff level hard core
both would be a world champion in today's plastic belt age.

Colin jones was a great fighter and a devastating puncher,
Christ that 8th round how did Colin Jones take all that pressure and pain unbelievable fighter
Laing use to completely dominate the prime Lloyd Honeyghan in sparring sessions..
the best fighter ever in history to never win a world title
Two very good boxers.Laing had it all, ability, ring craft, speed, but he self destructed.
He clearly didn't have it all or he would have been world champ. He had great skill but against other top fighters he fell short
what a left hook!!
sadly miss Harrys commentary
Can't say I do, there was and is now better commentators
Colin jones 1 of wales finest.Unlucky to never win world title.
the greatest fighter to never win a world title end off
@@GeeChambers very true so unlucky
Kirkland did well to get back up after that shot.

R I P kirkland
Word has it years later, someone shouted loudly 'Colin Jones' at Laing, who went down like a sack of spuds lol
Classic fights with those two.
Weird coincidence. Almost seemed like Laing was very subdued at the start of the ninth round and not putting his full effort in.
Hey I saw the same thing. A weird coincidence, introduced by a bevvy of low blows the previous round. Well, thats how the sport is built....
Lighting strikes at the same place twice!! How likely is that?!!
WHAT a f****g punch? Sweeeeeet, :)
Colin Jones always had it all to do but he had persistence and Patience and above all KO Punching power 🥊. Well worthy of his world ranked top ten contendership he was that! good.✅. Still a very good achievement is that 👍✅🥊🏴
He came so close to winning the title v McCrory, as here similar fights each time they met, McCrory dominant then Jones taking over.
There's no way the punch that floored Jones was low. It hurt though, no question about that.

Body shots by Jones then boom 💥
The referee is scam didn’t give Kirkland Laing a chance
Well the ref had a look in laings eyes, and his legs were gone at that point.
Jones got found out at world level...should have beaten milton mccrory...but was battered by don curry
Stopped on cuts. Curry was different league to Colin, McCrory and Laing.
Jones had the heart of a lion. Proper old school
puncher but not greatest boxer
if he had not got cut would have knocked Curry out end of fight..

Fight was stopped on cuts early, split bridge on Jones nose. Never even broke sweat. We will never know. He should have had a nose job sooner.
