The eel probably smelled the blood from the speared fish, and just wanted the fish. Morays are typically pretty docile towards humans, and most bites are accidental. He could have just gave up the fish, and let the eel live. Instead the eel will most likely die slowly and painfully now.

Had to shoot up to the surface when I got there I saw the boat and yelled shark in about that time the sharks hit me and grabbed the grouper attached to my BC which pulled my BC and my tank off of me.
