  • Welcome to this solo play through of the Dungeons and Dragons classic Lost Mine of Phandelver. This is the first time I have played this adventure and I am deliberately not reading ahead in the book in the DM role so that the situations and encounters we have will be as unexpected as they can be to our adventurers.

    I tried this once. It felt too much like I was writing a book but I didn't record the details and I was using the game system to write the battles and other challenges. Which admittedly might make for a fun way to write a book.

      I agree it is a bit like writing a book. I could never imagine writing a book from scratch but this approach makes it easy. I really enjoy writing the character interaction and dialogue.

    Admittedly at first I was dubious of the Audio quality, it sounds a bit off. But, after listening for just a few minutes I found myself not minding and instead enjoying the audiobook style of storytelling you've managed.

    By the gods, you're absolutely amazing. You had me utterly vested from start to finish. I've been contemplating doing solo D&D, and your template here is pretty much the exact idea of what I pictured in my head. Actually more so. As someone who has played this adventure twice now, I'm really looking forward to seeing how your campaign plays out.

      Wow! Thank you for the amazing comment 😊. As someone who has never played this adventure before I’m also looking forward to seeing how this plays out 😁. Trying very hard not to read ahead in the book at all to avoid spoilers.

      @@soloDandD And that's the hardest part. Not reading ahead -too- much, but having -just- enough information to give yourself and your characters something to work with. I assume once you get proficient enough with that, theres no adventure you can't run. I want to start on smaller ones like Phandelver, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, and maybe even Dragon of Icespire Peak, then work my way into larger ones like, Curse of Strahd, Out of the Abyss, and Tomb of Annihilation. I noticed your other campaign and plan on deep diving into that one this weekend. (At work now)
      Something to watch and listen to while I paint HeroQuest minis.
      Thats the beauty part of being a nerd isn't it? Always something to do. Unfortunately the time in which to do all the things becomes an issue. Responsibilities, mind.

      @@soloDandD I use a variety of resources honestly. I used to run D&D a lot, but fell off the wagon due to life and schedules getting in the way. Found solo play as a way to keep my head "in the game" so to speak.
      Everything from classic D&D to solo systems like Ironsworn Starforged, Ive run many systems at my table. I recommend Geek Gamers book 'Solo Game Master's Guide'. Another staple in my arsenal is Matt Finch's 'Tome of Adventure Design'. The list could go on and on. Love geeking out about the hobby.

      I’ve come across the geek gamers content and have her book too. I’m considering doing an Ironsworn adventure as a future project. I gather that system is more rp oriented. I’ve been listening to the Starforged podcast, a Bad Spot. That’s great.

    Once with a lvl 12 fighter alone, coming close to the end at lvl 14, fun. Then again with five lvl 1 pc's. That was more fun but more complicated and more work but no complaints.

    This was fun to listen to! I really liked your stills and graphics (what VTT are you using?). I have run this adventure myself many times and have homebrewed it a fair bit (running a campaign now with my students) so it's refreshing to see it being run as written. I like that you've also kept the pre-gen characters from the module but changed the names. I love this adventure and it's a great introduction to D&D. Cool descriptions, nice interplay between the characters. One tiny criticism - Vandross. A little too much maybe tone down the US southern drawl a tad. Still, I'm interested to see how you will run the rest of Chapter 1 and lean into the plot breadcrumbs for chapter 2. Also nice to see some content run by a fellow Brit for a change. I'd like to follow this adventure. Subscribed!

    • @soloDandD
      @soloDandD  Рік тому +2

      Thanks so much for the feedback Jay, really glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the sub! I’m not using a VTT, I’m using PowerPoint, gives me more flexibility on the set up and is designed to create videos. Yeah I wanted to stay true to the original story with the characters. I just created new graphics for them to fit my own art style. And sorry about Vandross, that’s just me struggling to do a good accent 😂. Hopefully will improve over time!

How to avoid spoilers for a dungeon encounter or rooms ? How do you avoid looking at the dungeon map? Can you please share your thoughts?

    • @soloDandD
      @soloDandD  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi, thanks for the interest. I’m just using the PDF download for LMoP from D&DBeyond. I started off just reading one section at a time to avoid spoilers. But once we got to Phandalin, with so many quests, I read further ahead to be able to decide what the priorities were. It did break the immersion a bit and spoiled the end of the main story. I don’t avoid looking at the dungeon maps. You’ll see I actually redo the maps in my own style using Inkarnate. But I do avoid looking at the details of where things are placed on the map. The map doesn’t show where the encounters are, just the overall layout. But yes, it’s tricky.

      @@soloDandD meaning you played the session offline, wrote it in manuscript form and read it?

      Yes, that’s right. I play through the session first, write everything down in a script and capture all the movement on the map. Then I go back and animate all the graphics and record the audio adding in music and sound effects.

    Can we get the images for the tokens?

      Great question. It’s something I have been considering. I am planning to release a pack of images including tokens and battlemaps once the series is concluded.

    I think i prefer the more storytelling feel a solo-dnd run has to a more chaotic show like Critical Role.

      Wow. Being compared with Critical Role. Praise indeed. Thanks!

    Did you used to read/write Harry Potter fan fiction? Your voice sounds familiar to me.

      Hi, whilst I think Harry Potter is great, I’ve never done any fan fiction on it.
