I would argue that his story makes up for the differences from his original set. In the story, in this form, he controls both light and shadow, which would make up for the gun metal instead of the gold. It was also explained that while his set size is larger, his story size isn't, so he isn't really a titan. If you are going to compare the previous versions of him, you should take story into account. After all, without the story, these are just two unrelated Lego creations.
+TTV Eljay i disagree, as a kid and even now i'd always want the sets based on characters i liked much more than the ones of characters i didn't like. If the set was really amazing then yeah it wouldn't always matter, but it definitely has an effect. (and do you honestly think the designer's thought process behind this set in particular wasn't "make a bigger darker takanuva"?)
+Wolf99555 No, I think it was to make a Shadow Toa version of Ahkmou. I'm not kidding, either. That was the original idea, but it didn't happen. You see, I'm not saying story explanations for things don't have an affect on people, I'm saying that they don't change the set. If in the story, Hewkii Mahri got his hand chopped off and that's why he had no hand in the set, then that wouldn't suddenly make that lack of hand good. It just means there's a story reason for it. It's still bad, we just know what the story explanation is. I love the story, and I love the sets. But I do understand that no matter the story explanation for something, if it's still a bad thing that people didn't like, then it's still bad. Honestly, I really like Takanuva, however I know a lot - I mean a lot - of people would have preferred it if he had been closer to his original form, like how they wanted the same for the Phantoka and Mistika.
Eljay Johnsen I don't want to argue but he's right, shadow ahkmou was cancelled very early on, the designer and Greg probably thought shadow takanuva was cool (can you blame them?)
Actually, his size does change a bit, due to being in Karda Nui, which has this effect of Av-Matoran. And since Takanuva was an Av-Matoran, he too gets slightly taller. But it's not by much.
He is a decent titan. I recall Greg or someone saying that at one point in time, Ahkmou was going to be transformed into a Toa of Shadow and get a titan release in 2008, and I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to say that this is the result of those plans.
I know I'm three years late but agree the red and blue pins don't bother me really like I'm sitting here listening to this guy I'm like damn bro do red and blue pins bother that damn much stop whining about and just enjoy the set
i personally adored Takanuva toa of twilight because of the custom legs and shoulders. they were super versitle techniques and the legs shown the true potential of the hollow ball:) being a hinge joint.
+Meir Teichman I agree. This was probably my favorite set along with Vezon since the original Takanuva. It looks so good to me, and it was awesome that they actually put some effort into one of the toa that came out that year (compared to the other 7, who all were really terrible to me). I felt like this set was one of the last Hurrahs of the series.
KingChiggy coudnt agree more:) going through the recap reviews it seems like the titans and the bigger sets were just the deisgners going all out with their product:D for one this giant takanuva looks just that: a giant toa! they nailed the humanoid shape solid and maaged to keep the key elements in place as well:D like how the gunmetal armor is placed the same way Inika-builds keep their armor:) on the upper limb of each appendage:D and i just realized maxilose had the prototype of shoulder articulation and $50 says the build-designers worked with the element-designers to get that av-toran limb made to act as the perfect shoulderblade.
One thing to counter the aesthetic inconsistency, is that all the gunmetal is generally consistent: smooth armor plating. That is plated on top of the less consistent, but generally more Technic-ey white.
Honestly, my favorite titan of them all. Probably more of a “My favorite Bionicle character is a titan so I automatically love it” feeling, but it still has a lot of great stuff going on with him.
This was the first & only Titan set I ever got from Bionicle. Does anyone (especially kids) care about the gaps, pins, & color contrast at all? I'm just curious.
@Legoman 842 They're part mechanical, so stupid little things like it being "gappy" are trivial. As a kid and even now as an adult, I never cared about these things he commonly nitpicks over.
I also think it’s cool to see an iconic Toa like Takanuva, that has a set able to confront Kardas, Ultimate Dume and the other enemy Titans due to his size and overall design aesthetic, the ‘controlled by evil’ effect.
I recently found my Takanuva titan fully built. I went to put it up for display and found the mask is really loose. The axle has almost entirely snapped off, hanging by a thread. Tried superglueing but it didn't help at all. Really gutted. :(
After going through my bionicle collection and seeing all the blue pins and red axels, I decided to go to bricklink and buy like 2000 black pins and axels.
He was only taller than the other toa in Karda Nui, where his body absorbed the energies of the core and caused him to grow to a massive size. But before and after Karda Nui he was the same size as the rest of the toa
I just got flashbacks to buying almost 20 pounds of Bionicle parts off Ebay that contained this Takanuva, the original Takanuva, Makutas Teridax, Icarax, Mutran, Vamprah, all three Pohatu Nuvas, and more... But when the package arrived, there was a huge hole in it, and the seller hadn't bagged the parts completely. I only received about 8 ish pounds...
I remember when I was little and I got this set I thought the long axle was supposed to go through the connector piece for the staff and mine was broken so I never needed up building it correctly.
Anyone that has this set can tell me how badly did the ball sockets age? Im looking for it on bricklink and at first i thought of buying also 2001 white hands as replacements for the 2008 ones...

I had this set and I thought it was decent. but Elijay when you mentioned brutaka, this slipped into my mind. Bionicle the mask of light Takanuva VS teridax and now Takanuva 2008 VS teridax
I dug out my old takanuva set a bit ago and for some reason he's missing the mask and had it replaced with a silver recolor of the original version, and he's missing the white foot covers. I have no idea where they went but since I was going to scrap the set for parts anyway I guess it's fine if not a bit bizarre.
I know that you probably wont answer this but would you happen to know the height of this guy? I made a moc of Takutanuva recently using build inspiration from his torso and I want to know how he stacks up height wise
I remember the day I got this set! Takanuva (2008) was one of my favorite sets! I would attach his power lance to his midak skylblaster and put it all on his back like a jetpack to make him fly. And his feet are the best bionicle feet I've ever seen.

This set is Huge! And is generally regarded as the design inspiration of Toa Mata Nui. That probably says it all. But similar to Toa Mata Nui, I like this set. It’s huge and has a very cool tinged by darkness effect on a character mainly associated with light. The shift in his element makes it a very interesting set and I like the new Avohkii for that reason. I like the evil look to it as it appears that yes Takanuva is being controlled by some form of evil. Apart from that, the new Power Lance is cool and it’s a solid Titan to a certain extent.
I'd have considered the set worthwhile if they'd have included the armor and mask pieces in gold as well, like how they included extra parts in several of the other larger piece sets. They even went to the trouble of showing him purified in the comics, so it wasn't like they didn't have the designs laid out already...

Yup I was right... Usually the red axles and blue pins Don't bother me TOO much (although they definitely bother me) I have to agree with you; The red and blue polka dots are ridiculous on this set. Also I'm looking forward to your 2009 reviews. Keep up the good work!
I literally only have 1 issue with this set: the mask. I LOVE the Mask Of Light's design, one of my favorites in the entire series, and really don't like the post-shadow leech version they look nothing alike. I really wish it resemble the original much more with changes as well. I've seen MOCs of this with the original mask just painted gunmetal black and it looks so much better!

hey ttv, I was wondering if you were gonna review 2009
dude not the stars they have av-matoran stylez
+Jeff and Maria Mendoza no dude I was just asking I hate those guys to
+Jeff and Maria Mendoza stars were 2010
+The Underscored Double oh so what was 2009
+The Underscored Double oh wait it was the glatorian run
Let me make a prediction before I watch this video: Eljay will have a mental breakdown about the massive number of red axles...
Yup I was right... Usually the red axles and blue pins Don't bother me TOO much (although they definitely bother me) I have to agree with you; The red and blue polka dots are ridiculous on this set. Also I'm looking forward to your 2009 reviews. Keep up the good work!
He is the only bionicle titan builds I have from bionicle hanging with two titan builds from hero factory Firelord and Witch Doctor
Titan Takanuva looks better and have cool weapons

My Favorite Part. ^^
I remember getting this set back when it came out and I was so blown away by it! To this day this is still my favourite bionicle set i own
Pity, I actually have this set, but the black crotch piece/leg connector thingy broke. too bad quz this is a rather boss looking set.
The blue pins aren't actually too bad. Blue doesn't contrast too violently with white. The red is a problem though
For once I agree with you on the pins and axles.
I wish I kept my Takanuva and not lose some of his parts
That weapon is wobbly as hell.
Next time I get Takanuva 2008 I am going to replace the red/blue pins with white ones
I didn't notice the pins and axles untill he said something
it is funny that he says it are all clone sets with the toa's, while all of them are, from 2001 till the stars, it were mostly clone sets.
***** I said most of them, and the mahri are my favorites!
The squeaks.. Well at least those aren't joints slippery
do you know who voriki is
I do.
I fell for it too because I was like 4 years old.
I always have and always will love 06 to 09 and this guy is one of my favs
Little more than three years ago. One day and 3 years after the original upload. Good times, compared to 2019.
I just built this set from the pieces from a job lot of pieces that where £20
