    Kimberly, could you please recommend a resource like artistcreation, i mean pigment database, but something up-to-date one, as I understand "creation" is rather old one 🤔 also could you please recommend some book to read about pigments?

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому +21

      Because Handprint and Art is creation sites are both so terribly outdated now, I have taken it on myself to start building a new pigment database. I'll be adding all of my swatch cards, with every brand's LF rating, independent lightfast test findings, over 100 pages of individual brand reviews and a page for each color pigment at www.KimCrick.com - if you can't find what you're looking for there, it's coming. I'm currently adding descriptions for all pigments, even ones no longer made, to be a complete resource. The reviews section has a list for fugitive pigments, top recommended lightfast ones, the pigment database section has all the swatches by color. Happy painting :)

    Now. We just need a granulating magenta. Boom. I'd have a fully granulating palette that is as fully versatile as any other. Absolutely gorgeous painting, Kimberly! I've been waiting for this cad red too! Thank you for your reporting on these topics!

    • @KimberlyCrick

      I would absolutely love a granulating magenta! For now, I think the closest we might be able to get is mixing this volcano red PR108 with Cobalt Violet Light/Pale PV14 or PV49. Might be able to transform that pale purplish-pink-leaning Cobalt into a touch warmer and stronger color with the addition of Cadmium. I bet it will still be fairly weak compared to a true magenta like PR122, but I've got to try that combo in some mixtures :)

    THANK YOU for the real, accurate, honest talk about toxicity. I run into the same hysteria over fabric dye; they insist that DYEING WITH FOOD COLORING should be done with dedicated equipment because it’s toxic? It’s food coloring. You can drink it. The ongoing misinformation is really frustrating, so your real info is a really nice change.

    Thank you for the sensible words about cadmium colors. While there are some highly lightfast alternatives to cadmiums in the brighter yellow range (although none that match the same excellent hue range), there are currently no bright red alternatives in the red range that can match or exceed cadmium lightfastness. The pyrroles come close-ish with PR254, at least in masstone, but the other pyrroles, such as PR264 are (as it turns out) significantly less reliable. I would hate for cadmium colors to vanish from the shelves because of misguided consumer resistance.
    I am always reminded of 19th century artworks where we know what pigments were being used. The bright sunshine yellows of Vincent Van Gogh are slowly losing their intensity and are going brownish because he loved using Chrome Yellow, whereas the yellows of Monet are as vibrant as the day he painted them, as Monet was one of the first famous artists to adopt cadmium yellow as his default yellow pigment. Of course it wasn't known as cadmium yellow back then. During the 19th century it was called Aurora Yellow because that is the name given to it by the first company to put it in a tube - Winsor & Newton. Interestingly, despite introducing the same color as Cadmium Yellow Middle in the mid 20th century, W & N kept selling it as Aurora Yellow as well until the late 1990's/early 2000's. A scurrilous example of a company selling the exact same color twice under two different names.
    Cad yellow and cad red need more love than they have been getting in recent years. Your words are appreciated.

    today I was browing the schmincke website (the German one). and I found very interesting links to artist portraits they made. like a detailed flyer or presentation map. I guess, they exists as printouts. they are downloadable. and what was interesting is, that a few did show artists using granulating paints. with examples. how they did it and some further tips. the one by Frank Koebsch was particularly interesting. intersting ideas. I guess, the more we here, read about them or see them actually in use, the more ides one get's on his/her own. I am saying that as beinner. real pros probably don't need that

    Love this Kimberly...just got sent a "Mini-Palette" from "Following the White Rabbit" and she included a sample ..big one, of Volcano Red...it does seems weaker...but I am working from a swatch...and although I tested it on not the greatest paper...which is HUGE with granulation...tons of H2o and 100% Cotton...it was amazing...of course I mixed it with everything...gonna buy myself a LARGE TUBE...AND THE YELLOW ALSO...as ,like you mentioned...that separation and granulation of the high key yellow, will POP...WHEN MIXED WITH ANY OTHER COLOUR, THAT IS FLAT...Amazing...they finally came out with 2 pIgments you cannot "DUPE"...LET US HOPE FOR MORE OF THESE SINGLE PIGMENTS TO COME IN THE FUTURE....in their "Supergranulation Line"...2 pigments out of 40 are single pigment colours...and just happen to be in the Volcano Series...Thank you for enlightening me...but I was actually researching the Volcano Red, that came in my mail last week...because I just LOVE IT...NEVER SEE A RED granulate like that...and mixing it with "everything and the kitchen sink" still amazing hues that granulate , are a happening...Guess you need to like to use this red...as it does show...but just a bit with different pigments...you see the granulation more than the colour with some pigments. Thanks again, for this amazing review. Janis

    I got the yellow and red! I sort of followed your lead with these. I have a mix of single pigment stuff from Schmincke and Daniel Smith and Lukas (thanks for THAT tip!) and some of the supergranulating colors I liked enough to get as a convenience mix. I liked your idea of using the Volcano Red with another Cad. I recently got Roman Szmal's Cad Vermillion which is wonderful. I'll try them together! I do love that it separates in mixes and it looks RED. Reminds me of some pointillist patterns or the old color separation patterns you got in comic book printing. I am curious to try it in figures and portraits.

    Great to see you write ‘heavy’ granulation on both the red and the yellow. I was wondering how schmincke would justify the inclusion of these single pigments as supergranulators. Imo there is a big space in yellow watercolour for that heavy granulating y159.and as you say, it will be very useful for mixing. Thanks for producing this.

    I wanted to take a moment to reply to a post on your Patreon, regarding price increases and availability issues as well as mixing and frugal supplies. I would LOVE to see more focus on frugal supplies.. a bit of "back to the basics" for your channel. There are multiple brands that either never got the sort of coverage others did (such as Cotman which was only featured as one color in one video, and I know there are colors in the brand that are duds but others that are really quite acceptable), or have not been addressed at all (like the newer Marie's masters watercolors which appear to be a major improvement in their line and are very inexpensive and easily available, or Daler Rowney artist line, or Camel which is very popular in other countries, produces quite nice work, and is available on Amazon). Not criticizing, I love your channel and content... but it did kind of switch at some point to exclusive, expensive materials. I've seen many lower end products I was terribly curious about and can find no info on, good or bad, that I can trust. This was the place to go for that. While I greatly appreciate artist quality, I may get to a point in the foreseeable future if things keep going the way they are that I will need to step down for replacement purchases.. inflation is kicking my butt to put it plainly. I would love to see more mixing videos.. more lower end paper/brush reviews... especially now that everything is so expensive and hard to get. I'd also love to see some videos about your painting process and techniques, or even drawing tutorials. I recently tried to place an order on Jacksons and shipping six half pans DHL was $26, ten dollars more than a big box of paint, paper, and brushes purchased last year... I don't even want to know what that box would cost now. The three big US suppliers have all raised their shipping prices, not just the minimum for free but the base price for shipping period.. Blick is up to $11 for the smallest order. It seems like imported stock is low everywhere. I wanted to do some experiments of my own with Aquafine and Cotman with additions of glycerine/honey/etc to improve performance... and tried for three weeks to find anyone who had the six specific basic pigments I wanted in stock, only to finally give up and settle on some substitutions because others were going out of stock while I waited. I too have wondered what the Russia/Ukraine issue is going to do for production and export/import of the popular products produced there.

      In this particular piece it was intentional to calm it down with a neutralizing, staining phthalo blue, but its vibrancy in mixtures will be dependent on the pigment traits of the other colors used. It can easily dominate some mixtures and would remain more red with warmer colors, though all cadmium tend to desaturate a bit as they dry. I’ll be sure to do a segment on mixing with a wider variety of colors when i do my more in depth PR108 spotlight video comparing all cad reds :)

    :-) yes you said it. I often wonder. what to do with those wonderful paints. especially apart from single exerimental paintings, how to develop a special aproach to recreate a certain style with them? even, if only single paints are used. not a whole picture out of granulating only. I did see a video by an Italian young women. she speaks so fast. but the experiment painting she did was very interesting. the first time I onderstood, what would come out of a painting with granulating only. a sort of standard landscape with a forst it was. and then I knew, this needs to be balanced with non granulating. the trick must be rather, how to figure out, what is a good approach, not to get mixed up with the layers... I am still waiting for the experts to share that with the public. I love the abstracts by the way

      Did you find them useful or must-haves? I wonder if working with Potter's Pink, cobalt violet, and highly granulating browns would suffice in terms of granulating mixtures and effects. I'm also worried about the excessive amount of binders and undesired effects in these two volcano colors.

      @@lindsaykorth2713 I am a bit of a pigment nerd, so I got both to round up all the single pigments in the SG lineup and make the mixes myself. That being said, I found the yellow a bit disappointing, as it’s very weak and it takes a lot of paint to get a minimum of colour. I let some of mine dry in a palette and it was hard to rewet too. I quite like the red, and love the mixture with it in desert green, which I was able to recreate. I think it’s worth getting the red as it’s uncommon to have granulating reds and you can create unusual mixes, but the yellow you could probably do without.

      The winsor and newton or kremer py159s granulate but more softly, similar to how this new volcano red granulates more than the minor g seen in regular cad reds. You’ll probably notice it most in w&n when mixing it with lightweight pigments like phthalos, where even w&n’s should drop out of mixtures in wet washes to provide you with little pools of yellow. I got myself the set of the 5 half pans of Volcano and, as always it’s a lovely little palette that they come in. I’m so glad that you said that they were ‘gummy’ because I’d bought the Volcano ones as a set and I chose Shire Green and Desert Yellow as singles to add in and they do feel ‘gummy’ and some of them seem to have a bit of that shiny, gummy residue even on the swatches I did. They are nice enough colours, but I really do not like the gummy feel and I don’t like that sticky shiny looking edge either. There are some people that won’t mind and don’t get the ick about how things feel, but it’s really put me off them.

    Jackson’s latest blog in the granulating colours says ‘Please note: Due to difficulties sourcing pigments with colours in the Volcano range, Schmincke has made the decision to discontinue the Volcano colours for the foreseeable future’ so anyone wanting these colours might be best to invest in the yellow and red tubes soon - I assume these are the colours in short supply. Edit: saying that it’s probably just the red as the yellow is in the shire and desert sets and they aren’t mentioned.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому +1

      I contacted Schmincke and their response was this "Volcano super granulating set with 5 ml tubes are sold out, but all individual 15 ml tubes and half pans are available and can be ordered from St. Louis Art Supply store or Jacksons". (I asked about trouble with obtaining PR108 or PY159 and if they expected Volcano colors to be out of stock for a long time/discontinued, since SLAS store had posted a 6 week restock time instead of Jackson's "indefinitely" making it very confusing to understand if this product was discontinued... ) It seems that only the 5ml box set collection is the issue here for now and Jackson's just got a restock of Volcano Red and Yellow, each having over 60+ 15ml tubes in stock.

    Oh wow this is exciting! Initially I paid no attention to the new line of colors thinking it was just going to be more easily mixed convenience colors. Glad I watched your video!! - Q: In your opinion Is PV62 that different from Ultramarine Violet ? (PV15?) I have Da Vinci's PV15 and I feel it is pretty weak. But I'm always interested in new pigments.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому +3

      It is a little different, mainly in texture as PV62 has more granulation than the average PV15. Ultramarine Violet varies a lot by brand though, the one from DVinci is closer in color hue to PV62, but lacks texture - a little similar to the one by white nights in that regard. The PV15 from W&N or Rembrandt have more texture, but are more purple to pink, warmer. I think all of these colors are generally a bit weak, in both mixing strength and in dark to light value capability. They'll never dominate a mixture, but you'll get a darn close color match using either pigment. I'll very likely do a video comparing all the brands of PV15 I've collected vs Schmincke's PV62 so we can get a better idea on which brand replaces it best in mixtures. In the meantime, if you happen to already own a PV15 no harm in attempting to replicate Schmincke mixtures that use PV62! Happy painting :)

    Volcano red reminds me of the Daniel Smith "mayan" swatches, or Rembrandt's cobalt violet. It looks SO gummy. Such a shame as it's lovely shade of one of the nicest red pigments. A granulating (and lightfast) yellow would be a lovely addition to my admittedly absurd collection, but this one definitely looks anemic.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому

      I think what bothers me more is the sheen at an angle, gummy paints drive me nuts with that little bit of glossy shine that catches my eye periodically. It definitely does feel a bit like using the mayan or cobalt colors, I think the binder additives may add to the texture by keeping the pigment particles spread apart. Even though I wish both options were more intense, for such a uniquely textural option of these colors, I'm glad they were made.

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke 2 роки тому

      @@KimberlyCrick I know it's not really an option for most people, but I'm sure I read something on handprint about soaking the paint in water to leech off some of the binder from the pigment that I predictably can't find now to reference directly. It could help decide if it's the binder or the grind of the pigment (as with PB15:3 in Managanese blue hues) contributing to the level of granulation whilst also fixing the shiny problem, if you're willing to sacrifice a few ml for some experimenting? Some of the new mixes do make the single pigments more tempting though, especially those browns in the desert set.

      That's very exciting, hopefully in the future more companies will start to offer PV62. It's such a great pigment, very lightfast and it would be nice to be able to get it from more than just Lukas or Schmincke. I am glad they did away with the old PV14 Cobalt Vio since it was a problematic color that was really hard to re-wet and got all weird and dried up in the tubes. I'll be sure to include PV62 options in an upcoming video comparing PV15 Ultra Violets (PV15 is really more similar to PV62 than Cobalt Vio PV14 was, it's funny to me that it's sold as a Cobalt hue/replacement).

    Ohh I am SO tempted by Volcano Red. It is so far the only Schmincke super granulating colour I feel like I *need*. However, my hesitation towards cadmiums isn't due to the toxicity (I'm _fairly_ confident I won't mistake my rinsing cup and tea mug..again) but what to do with the paint water and tissues. Where I live, it's forbidden to pour down the drain or throw in the garbage, due to it accumulating in plants and animals, ruining lakes and farmland. It has to be collected in jars labelled hazardous waste containing cadmium, and turned in at a hazardous waste disposal. How do other artists deal with this? I've yet to hear anyone mentioning how they dispose of toxic art waste, and I really want to know how others tackle this problem. That volcano red just might be worth the hassle...

      Personally i wipe my brush on a scrap piece of paper to use in the background of new art. Sometimes I even make a small bottle for collecting color from initial brush rinses until it’s strong enough to use as an ink or to tint white gouache etc. When I do a PR108 spotlight video I’ll be sure to talk about that more and go further into mixtures and usage possibilities. Thanks for reminding me about this issue:)

    do you have a tutorial or a link to swatches on how to mix a vermilion orange?

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому

      For the intensity of vermilion I really try to use a single pigment color as close as possible to the hue you're after. For me that's either a PR108 Cadmium Red Light (sometimes called Cadmium Vermilion, such as in Roman Szmal), a pyrrol red leaning orange like PO73 or Schmincke's "vermilion" PR255. Any mixtures you make with other reds and yellows are going to have decreased lightfastness, since most other colors are not as wonderfully UV stable as pigments like PR108 (some opacity) or P255 (more transparent). If you're trying to work with what you already own, I'd try starting with the warmest red you have and adding a touch of yellow until you reach the orange-red desired. Hope that helps, happy painting :)

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому

      None in my PY159, but my volcano brown was really weird textured, gummy and oddly gritty. I have a feeling it doesn't look as it was intended to. Hearing a lot of problems about weakness and re-wet issues as well, though PY159 is a bit like viridian in that way. I suspect my brown got frozen during transit, maybe the same sort of thing happened to your PY159. Though I expect that because it's such a heavy pigment it won't take much time before all of our tubes suffer from a lot of separation, maybe extreme temperatures help speed that up.

    is ist possible to replace the cadmium red with an other lesser toxic red, or is the cadmium red the only granulatig red?

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому +1

      Technically Potters Pink is classified as a red pigment PR233, but it really looks like a dull brownish pink - but it has amazing granulation. Otherwise the only other granulating reds I know of are even more toxic than Cadmium (Cinnabar and some other rare reds made with mercury and arsenic). There are some colors we'd consider brown which are categorized as red pigments PR101 too (red iron oxide, caput mortuum, english red etc.) with texture and are non-toxic. I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind.

  • @royalfutura

    Are there any other PR108's in your collection that you find granulate as heavily as Volcano Red? I'm thinking of supplementing the Volcano with another Cad Red, as you recommended.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому +1

      There are no other brands offering as heavily granulating as Volcano Red. There's some generally mild granulation in all PR108 varieties, with the deep/purple versions tending to be a little more textural than the light/vermilion versions being smoother. Since the above average texture Volcano Red is so expensive I'm extending it by turning my brighter smoother cad red light paints from other brands into average granulators, which also helps brighten the color a bit more to my liking.

    I got the half pans of all the new colors (Volcano, Shire, and Desert) and the Volcano Brown (as well as a bunch of the other super granulating colors in pre-poured half pans) is just loaded with binder- paints on like Vaseline and dries totally shiny. It's terrible. I cannot believe Schmicke put that out there. If I could go back I would have gotten them all in tubes. Such a disappointment.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  2 роки тому

      That sounds terrible, I haven't tried my shire and desert colors yet, but now I'm not looking forward to it - I got those ones in pans :( Unfortunately, as I mentioned in this video, even the tubes are a bit gummy and I suspect extra binder, disperse and re-wet additives were included to these formulas due to the particularly hard to re-wet nature of PY159 and possibly to encourage extra texture/particle separation in the PR108. All of these colors were overall weaker than usual for Schmincke and required me to use much more paint up to make the swatch than normal. I did see some glossy shine in masstone, but I have noticed that before with other Schmincke colors. I normally buy their tubes and wonder if the problem is made even worse in the pans, since heavy pigments sink and settle, even from the binder, which might mean a heavier vaseline-like layer at the top of dry pans. I'll see how my pans look and mention it in the upcoming videos regarding shire and desert diy mixtures.
