I had a hard time getting these to grow from seed, in Phoenix az… but have done well with nursery plants. Love these! I’m in so cal now… so I’m def going to try these again, from seed here. But I’ll probably pick up a few at a nursery… want to scatter these around.

I have onion chives. I cut off the tops and throw them in a baggies and freeze them I use them in most of my cooking along with onions. They add that small amount of garlic flavor that makes food delicious.

You can also dry them in the oven!

Believe me lady, I can kill it. I've planted chives every year for at least the past five years and still haven't had enough grow back the second year that I didn't have to plant them again.

I have a clump that grows in my gravel driveway. It's been stepped on, driven over and it keeps on going.

You are literally the BEST, I love your enthusiasm. It’s absolutely contagious. I have a big patch of chives. I have no idea if they’re onion or garlic but I’m gonna go divide them and spread them around and see what happens!!!

Onion chives have tube-shaped leaves and purple flowers. Garlic chives have flat leaves (like blades of grass) and white flowers.

My onion chives grew and grew until I dug them out and put in garlic chives and those things are growing more than the onion chives. I might have to dig those out too.

NOT TRUE! ALL my chives have died! In MANY ways. I've tried to put them in pots, in long containers, with little water, lots of water, in greenhouse, outside, inside, direct sunlight and shaded and more.. They are VERY hard to grow and wilt and die very easily. I've tried to grow them for two years with no success. Trying to buy them pre-grown from stores and nurseries as well as from seed.
I've put them in various types of potting soil from Kellogg's to Miracle-Gro, to potting mixes from various places. As well as I've planted at least 5 different seed types and brands as well. Nothing has worked. So this isn't "pretty much un-killable" at all!

I grew chives for the first time last year. They are now sending up flower buds. Am I able to harvest as normal while it's flowering? I'm not sure if it's like other herbs where the flowering stage changes the flavor of the leaves.

The flowering stems won't be like regular leaves, but you can actually eat the blossoms. We've got a great post on this: www.gardenary.com/blog/how-to-cut-back-chives-and-what-to-do-with-their-blossoms
