Hohner Special 20 vs. Hohner Pro Harp (C harps both)

- I have always played Special 20s, so lately I've been trying some other haprs. The Lee Oscar and now the Honer Pro Harp. When I first played the Pro tonight after buying it at Guitar Center, I was expecting an electrifying experience since the advertising on the box said that it played real loud and clear. I didn't notice any loudness and it didn't seem any more clear. So I recorded this little comparison because there not always information on harps out there, especially if it is not one of the mainstream harps. Of course the people that are sponsored by Hohner say great things, but I'm more of a regular guy who enjoys play harp sometimes, so I"m probably less biased (except for the fact that I love the Special 20). The comparison is in the key of C.
Since making this video, I've seen that the Pro has a more rich sound and doesn't break down when I blow hard into it. So, I'm more pleased by the Pro Harp than I originally was.
Exactly what I experienced when I got my Proharp... I really had to break it in, but I found it to be sturdier then a special 20, even though I really like that one as well...
"Maybe this is a Pro harp because you have to be a Pro to use it" haha that was awesome haha

I love the pro harp. I adore the amount of resistance in it. It's a harmonica that challenges you to push it as hard as you can and it takes a lot to break it. You'r right about the special 20 being easier to play. The name Pro Harp is definitely appropriate but once you've grappled with it a while it's very enjoyable. This is my experience at least. My first good harmonica was a Pro harp and it was definitely tough but I think I'm a better player because of it.
Entonces cuál es mejor
Thank you for video comparision, brotherDougE! Sound recorded very good and differents clear. I selected a ProHarp for me. And you - have enjoy with your Special 20 ;)
I can hardly notice a difference but Im new to the harmonica. Thanks for sharing
I don't hear much difference on UA-cam either
Thanks for the great video! Pro-Harps offer a lot resistance. I have 2, E and Eb ... I still don't see the point to them. Special 20s seem much more responsive - and yes, you want to do more with them. They also have the same brass reeds as the Marine Bands - which to be honest is the sounds I prefer, but they also need to be broken in and sort of fight against you.
I like the" tone" of the Pro Harp better. I have them both in Key C as well. The Pro Harp seems to play smoother to me. With that said, I will probably not buy another Pro Harp because of the protruding reed plates that I have to file/sand down for comfort issues. Bitter sweet post : ) Most of my playing in church and videos I've done so far have been done by hohners. But I'm still looking for the best one.
You seem to be playing harder and with more effort on the Special 20 which is why I like the Pro Harp more.
After a year or so using the pro harp, I do like it a lot. It is very consistent, smooth and rich sounding. AND, I still love playing Special 20s. I till think the SP20 is wild. The SP20 is louder, that's for sure.
Do you think that the Special 20 is better for a novice just starting to learn how to bend?
+ZettaiBaka Yes definatly!
Yes, certainly do.
Absolutely 100% agree with you. Sticking to Special 20.
20!! Got one never fails!! Got lee osker !!
Good play! Like from Russia!
Nice comparison.Nice playing also.
I was picking out some new harmonicas the other day, and I know about most Hohners but I didn’t know anything about the pro harp, I was about to get it, but glad I didn’t now
I bought a couple of Lee Oscar harps and I do like them as well. To me, the Lee Oscars feel very consistent, not as wild as a Special 20, I might use the word "smooth" to describe the Lee Oscars I got from Guitar Center.
My harmonica sounds like a normal harmonica where is the button to turn on the blues mode 😂
Enjoyed your playing thank you very much sir.
Sp 20s are the best. But the drawback is they don't last long. The pro harp has thicker reeds and is better at rock& roll. It is made to be pushed louder.
I started noticing the difference after playing a lot and playing hard. The Pro seemed to be more consistent in hard playing. when I did the original comparison, I was not playing as hard or as much.
Hi ! greetings from argentina. have a question, in comparison with the SP20 about the response, feels better the SP20 or its in the same level? i have a sp20 y A and know the response they have, its very nice, good bendings etc.
I tend to agree with you.
What's the name of the 2nd song you were playing? Sounded great
Wow, amazing video, congratulations
I like the special 20 better also!
I've been thinking about one of those new ChromaBenders
Would you consider BroDugE the Hspecial 20, c key as a good option to play classic blues ??? also... do you know what harmonica key is played by Mark Farmer from the Grand Funk Rail Road in "Inside Looking Out" ??? Tks in advance for your opinion and your help !!
+Carlos Azteca The harp at the end of that song is done on a "C" major diatonic harp such as a Hohner Special 20 in C. The song is in the key G, so C is the crossharp required. Good Carlos!
Tks a lot for let me know bro brotherDouge, I'll keep in mind, good info man !! Regards from Canada.
@@carlosazteca8441 Regards from Burbank, California!
Nice job
I have not tried the Hohner Crossover.
i wonder if he broke the pro in? cos if its new vs broken in then it might affect the tone and the easy of playing
No, it was brand new at the time of this recording. Now, it does seem to be a better play.
@@brotherDougE1956 You should re review it. I just bought the Pro Harp. I'm a newbie at Harmonica.
That's very helping me. I have a Pro in G, but i'm a absolute beginner. I play guitar bei t i want to learn blues harp. Maybe i buy a SP20 in C because the most lessons on youtube are in c i guess.
Is SP20 or Rocket easier for beginners? Is Rocket worth the extra cost or better to stick to Sp20?? anyone? THANKS!
+patrick Koh
End of the day, YOU gotta figure which harmonica u can play best on! Noone can help ya with that. But in many ppl's opinion the extra cost is NOT worth it... Imagine there wouldnt be a Rocket, of course they would say the SP20 is best....
great, thanks for the video!
Thank you. I'm learning all that staff and buying A and G S20 harmonicas tomorrow))) huh
On and off for about 35 years. If you add up actual time, about 2 or 3 years solid.
You are pro, man.
Okay, just wow. 👌😄
Have you had the chance to try the Hohner Crossover?
No, but they seem interesting
прекрасный инструмент!
how much time have you played harmonica?
to bych chtěl umět, ale nevím na jakou harmoniku
Nice!!
Over and over comparisons to the Special 20 have been a bust. Out of the box it can't be beat. You've got to go custom to challenge this harp. And even then good luck.
what about lee oscar? i've seen some vids on youtube saying that it sounds as good as hohner special 20 but that lee oscar is easier to play….i am just repeating what i've heard in this vid, i haven't tried neither one of those harmonicas myself.
sexypoetry
I bought a couple of Les Oscars and found them to be very nice. Different than a special 20 however.
brotherDougE yap, i've bought lee oscar natural minor and harmonic minor in meantime and i like them a lot, sound is very nice and plastic comb is good for me cause i can just rinse them in a water till i hopefully learn bit more about maintenance, but i also have quite a few hohner chromatic ones, and tombo slideless chromatic, the only harmonica that is suitable for atonal music, and i'll probably buy hohner special 20 cause it seems like everyone likes it, though i seldom play harmonicas, i think that piano is my thing really.
The special20 is the best
Очевидно что Special 20 на голову выше :)
Best saund harp is China made Harley Benton and it is very cheap .
