  • Decades before Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's opened within a 90-minute drive of South Bend, avid outdoorsmen had Lunker's. CLOSED JUNE 2015
The 60,000-square-foot Edwardsburg store offered much more than fishing, hunting and camping equipment and supplies. What started as a small bait shop 30 years ago, grew into a regional destination for customers and their families to experience. When they think back on their visits to Lunker's, customers will remember the wall display featuring the head of an 8,000-pound bass crashing through a brick wall, and dozens of fresh and saltwater aquariums, including the 6,000-gallon Lunkquarium that served as the restaurant's focal point right up until the end.
That end came on Thursday morning, when employees at Lunker's and Angler's Inn Restaurant were told the business was immediately closing. Local owners Danny and April Striz also issued a press release, announcing that the business, which suffered financially during the recession, was placed in receivership by Teachers Credit Union. "Lunker's never fully recovered" from the recession, the owners stated in the release. "An investor came on board and provided some temporary relief, but still it was not able to secure the funds needed to make it a truly viable venture."
The doors were locked Thursday and signs that thanked customers for their support were taped to the windows just hours after the restaurant and bar contained dozens of patrons enjoying what would be the last night of business.

At times it's amazing how a small store or restaurant could grow into being a really big local landmark. Up until the early seventies there was a chain of quick.service sit down restaurants in Milwaukee call Dutchland Dairy. Decent fare at a reasonable price plus a large-scale Dairy Store. In under a year the whole place shut down but you can still tell the old stores as they have a golden spire where are the blades of the windmill would be attached to it and no they didn't have wind power energy. Plus we had a place like a 4Runner to Home Depot called Evans products where you could buy items in bulk for your house in a self-service setting. Almost ahead of its time the store actually did become a Home Depot. Whoever installed that fish must have the greatest rotor up there for it to keep turning so much

There’s some about those old businesses that just have a comfortable feel to them definitely. My wife said her dad used to take her there with her mom and it brought back a lot of good memories. Yes I definitely agree that whoever installed that fish up there definitely did quality work after all these years it still spinning. I thought it was very interesting. When the wife told me it was the store to go to before bass pro shop and Cabela’s. It’s a pretty good sized building. I wish I could’ve seen inside of it.

I sure wish I could’ve had a look inside. I bet some of that stuff is still up there. I hope all is well with you brother tell the wife we both said hi and I wish I could’ve seen it inside like I said, but I knew a lot of people in the area would remember it and I’m glad you are one of them, my friend. That is pretty cool. They would bring celebrity outdoorsman in for seminars.

Aww, I love this little video. It's such a big building that just now sits empty. I hope someone buys it or rents it. It would be such a waste if no one does. Theres still so much potential here. I betcha this place was booming at one time. I watch your videos and they always make me want to drive back "home". I miss that area and everything about it. I feel like I haven't been there in forever even though it's only been a couple of months. Good luck to everyone hunting for those bracelets! Hello to Mrs. Storm. You did a great job!!

You are such a uplifting spirit. I really appreciate your positive comments and vibes always my friend. I understand how it feels missing home. I felt the same way after moving away a couple times. People are really enjoying hunting those bracelets and it’s fun doing them. Mrs. storm said to thank you so much and tell you hello also. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I thought that was pretty incredible too. I was very happy to see it was still moving around up there. Talk about good craftsmanship and good reliable work that rotor up there has held the test of time and seen a lot of things.

My wife said the same thing Ashley. I wish I would’ve have been here when it was open, but I do not remember the place however it sounded really nice. Believe it or not they are using 1/2 of the building for a dispensary now.
