  • Well, this is the first stadium I have visited in VR that looks similar to what I am used to. A soccer/football stadium. The Marvel Stadium (Docklands Stadium) looks like it would have a great atmosphere and I love the marvel theme! Strange bit of advertising!
Docklands Stadium, also known by naming rights sponsorship as Marvel Stadium, is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium in the Docklands area of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Construction started in October 1997, and was completed in 2000 at a cost of A$460 million. The stadium features a retractable roof, and the ground level seating can be converted from oval to rectangular configuration.
The stadium is primarily used for Australian rules football, and was originally built as a replacement for Waverley Park. Offices at the precinct serve as the headquarters of the Australian Football League (AFL) which, since 7 October 2016, has had exclusive ownership of the venue.[4] With a capacity for 56,000 spectators for sports, the stadium is the second-largest in Melbourne, and hosts a number of other sporting events, including domestic Twenty20 cricket matches, Melbourne Victory soccer home matches, rugby league and rugby union matches, as well as special events and concerts. Seven Network's digital broadcast centre is also headquartered at the precinct.

Marvel stadium, the very 1st and only ever stadium in the world to have a cricket match under a roof. To this day. I remember one of those games was between south Africa vs Australia and it was raining so heavy and so hard , and you could hear the thunder while the match was broadcasted on tv , but no frustrating rain delays could ever stop this game. It was brilliant. And yes rob , the roof does open and close. Also there are no tall ugly looking light towers , as all the lights for night time sporting events are all inside the stadium, just as the Optus stadium in Perth.
Also marvel stadium is used every year for AFL football games , just to change things up a little bit, rather than use the same old stadiums just like the MCG, also some days or nights during football season, they would have 2 separate games on at the same time from stadium to stadium.. love your work rob , I think it's awesome what you do and your interest in my country Australia

Lots of redevelopment, Australia spends more on sport stadiums than hospitals.

People seem to hate this stadium but its really not that bad. Its just in a weird location, made even weirder by the idiotic decision to build a shit ton of massive buildings right in front of it. Plus it gets tarnished by association with Docklands, which is an urban planning fail of epic proportions.

For soccer, Aami Park (opposite the MCG) is the main one used which is quite modern and coolish looking but Marvel is also used for some games. Marvel was also known as Telstra Dome back in the day

When I was a kid it was called Telstra Dome, one time I remember I was like maybe 9 and when to an Essendon vs north Melbourne game. We had literally the highest furthest back seat, which sucked cause I hate heights, also I'm short sighted but didn't have glasses back then so as a kid it was two hours of boredom.

enjoyed the video rob once again. I like the longer format of inspecting things more and the areas around it. Melbourne is a wonderfull city, and i was there yesterday infact. The vibe being in the city during a big game is pretty great. During the grand final the public transport is packed full of fans and after the game, if a melbourne based team wins, the suburb they’re from just goes mental with an after party

The stadium has movable seating as well, the bottom level wings and behind the goals can roll in to be closer to the action for soccer and rugby games which is pretty cool, you lose the corners but it makes it feel like a soccer/football stadium with the fans a lot closer to the pitch

Hi Rob, I was at Marvel Stadium last night for Shaun Burgoyne's 400th game. Not a great result for Hawthorn, unfortunately. You are correct about the roof; it is moveable. The stadium was designed a bit like a European stadium. The idea was to have a stadium in the city centre, tucked in amongst the buildings that you come across as you wander around the place - or something like that. It is, as you said, also designed so that you are close to the action. I was in the front row of the upper level last night and it did feel that way. For me, the MCG will always be the premier stadium, but this is pretty good too.

Funnily enough, not many people (from what I’ve seen) are actually fans of Marvel Stadium, at least for soccer.
What’s cool is that the seats in the lower bowl can actually be moved closer to the field for soccer games though for whatever reason they only do that very occasionally despite soccer matches being a common occurrence here.
As someone that’s been in a packed out Marvel Stadium for both soccer and footy, I can confirm the atmosphere can be amazing especially with a closed roof. I see some people refer to it as a lifeless bit of concrete. I feel like an odd one out for loving it. Perhaps that perspective may stem from soccer attendances here being quite small compared to the size of the stadium which may affect the atmosphere, especially with the seats not always being moved closer.

Where you’re looking in the mid part of the video is widely considered to be a pretty soulless part of the city. You describe it as vibrant but the dock lands is mainly a few half empty apartment buildings without much of a community. The real living breathing city is on the other side in the main grid. That’s the good part of Melbourne

When they play soccer their the bottom level seating pushes out onto the ground by about 20-30M, means closer to the soccer pitch. Holds 54,000 but when the roof is closed it sounds like 100,000. Great for concerts like Coldplay and U2 etc

I was lucky enough to do a full tour of Etihad, including the players change rooms, the coaxhes boxes, tv interview rooms etc. At the "G" , I was able to walk on the turf, go into the Long Room etc. I have seen several footy and cricket games there since the mid 70s.

Good review Rob, just a tip, I watch another site that after they have recorded their reaction and then take it to edit before upload, what the guy does is place photo's of what he was talking about during his reaction. What I mean is, in the case of this video, what he would do is google a photo of Marvel during an actual cricket match, or during an actual football match, and insert that into the reaction for a few seconds, just to show what he was unable to show while he was giving his reaction. I think that you could utilise that technique in a video like this.

Yeap, Marvel has a roof (and as a result has a lot of issues with the surface - although bad drainage hasn't helped either). Over time they've created regulations about when they close the roof (e.g. when there's achance of rain in Melbourne - which I think is most of the time). Been there a couple of times, and have to admit I'm not a major fan (in an attempt to get fans closer to the action I feel like not all seats have a view of the entire ground e.g. from memory sitting 2nd tier on the wing you can't see the interchange below you because the tier is too far over the tier below - possibly in front of the bar where you were marvelling at the view). I think some of the cause might be that unlike MCG (and other grounds) that evolved over time, Docklands had to be squeezed into an area so it tends to have stands that go upward more than outward.
Don't mind watching BBL there though....but I guess blindspots in cricket are less critical unless there happens to be a fielder there.
LOL: Medibank is Health Insurance not a bank.

Soccer is apparently not that great here from what i have heard never been to a soccer match. People say its like London Stadium with West Ham just a oval stadium kinda doesn't work well because how far you are from the pitch.

Yes with football you need to have fans right next to the pitch for sure. Running tracks ruin the atmosphere

View from William street is not far from city center. Artwork is atrocious in Docklands. Worst arena in Australia. The atmosphere is non existent. Great idea, but nothing about this arena actually is any good. Ground size does not work for any sport. Second tear is for corporates and very often not occupied. Worked in the area and no life after work hours. Worst part of Melbourne and only developed in the past 25 years.

Melbourne considers & advertises itself as the "culcha capetal" of Straya. They have to go down that path because their beaches (*choke) are crap. They should've built Melbourne at Lakes Entrance because the area is stunning. They have nothing beauty-wise in comparison to Sydney with many amazing bridges including the "coathanger" plus the Opera House, one of the most beautiful harbours in the world & one of the most incredible foreshores on the planet.
When I first got here, Sydney almost 40 years ago the comparison was already running. An anthropologist studied the 2 cities & the only place where Melbournites had more criminal activity was in peeping Toms. Their suicide rate was much lower but attempts much higher to which this -ologist said they're already dead inside so suicide doesn't work. I love AFL but I think Melbourne's a shit-hole. The weather is like Hobart's with a couple of extra degrees. It's shitty & drizzles a lot. In Sydney it rains less often but twice the capacity because it rarely drizzles here. The -ologist asked people what they'd miss if they left, Melb it was their friends & family but with Sydney it was Sydney mostly but also f&f.

Rex you're worrying about who sent the virus to Sydney?
The question you should be asking is, who let the virus into the country in the first place?
A cruise ship, "in one of the most beautiful harbours in the world," does that ring any bells?
