- Father John Murphy a peaceful priest turned rebel leader
A ‘Radharc’ documentary looking at the story of 1798 hero Father John Murphy of Boolavogue, County Wexford. His exploits are celebrated in the folk song ‘Boolavogue’. The local curate led a People’s Army against the Crown forces and was executed at Tullow.
Presenter Father Peter Lemass examines the motives and that turned Father Murphy from a peaceful priest, who initially persuaded his parishioners to give up their pikes, into a rebel leader.

Great man. His fellow priest and friend, Fr. Michael Murphy tried to liberate my hometown of Arklow and was shot dead charging canons.

You have to remember that very great men and women come about because of unusual happening in life, be it wars, famines, injustice, plagues, etc. People who go to the ends of the earth to help others in need. many of those people get forgotten about with time. As far as I know his mother was a Bermingham via Ferns her ancestor was a granddaughter of Grace O'Malley who married into Clonegal Castle. I know this via DNA on Ancestry. There is a monument to him on Gorey Hill. Unfortunately now very neglected.
