Thanks for listening! -- Tacitus is excellent. Worth noting that Rome's currency was debased (by mixing in other metals) significantly over the course of Tactitus' lifetime. Check this out: www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-silver-content-in-roman-coins-2011-5
Just finished this book today. Definitely giving plenty food for thought. Now tempted to reread Pierre, which bowled me over and became one of my favorite books when I read it a decade ago. Hopefully it will still retain that sheen for me. Come back to UA-cam!
I'm excited to read this. I read Moby Dick a year and a half ago, and now nothing measures up to it!!! (Except Don Quixote.) I just ran out and picked up Confidence Man and Pierre. I did read Bartleby, and loved it. Thanks for your insights and assessments, I learn a lot here.
Oh, please leave a note when you get through it - this book really is sort of top-level literacy, and it might even fail in places. But that’s what I love most about Melville is his attempt to “go for it.” Hope you like it, and Pierre!
Yeah he wasn’t my fav-his dialog with Aarvoll left me kinda unclear what exactly he was saying, and the older I get, the less patience I have for that way of talking.
So Rabbi Boteach just popped into my Insta Feed. I did not follow him, and I cannot now unfollow him. LOL. Any tips? Nice vestments -and your glasses reference Morrissey. Noted. Late 1900's writers were the best. I am glad you instructed that period. Wordsmiths...the pinnacle of our language in America. The balance of trust....
A difficult book to follow. So many characters who might be the same knaves only with different 'appearances'. I lent a friend my copy and never saw it again.
If you reduce things to math confidence can be explained by a confidence interval. So CI(y,x) = 90% it is below x and 90% it is above y. If you are talking about beliefs you need to use "discernment". Maybe look at the fruits of said confidence man.
My outsider's view of some representations of Buddhist practice advise against mulling over these pros and cons. They strive to allow this kind of thinking to arise and depart without engagement. Similar to Paul, they emphasize compassion. Another opportunity for faith.
You can trust me bro. In any event, this song has Moby Dick reference, not hard to spot. As a Jew, I'm doing my part to promote literary references to primary texts in our popular culture. ua-cam.com/video/Q21YoXjShdo/v-deo.html
Very helpful, Thanks. The theme of trust and/or the lack of it, is so contemporary for these times. Will check out Tacitus.

Good stuff! I finally read Confidence-Man for the first time a few months ago. Such a rich and relevant and (as you say) dialectical book.
Perfect commentary. Glad to know some peoples’ brains still work
Haha, thank, bro.

“InvItation to thought rather than a punctuation to thought” 🤓
it actually is a nice way to comment about melville's long-ass-sentences writing style
I got yer confidence right here.
I’ve been waiting for your assessment of Spiritman. This is it

That's interesting -- about avoiding the mulling-over. An opportunity for faith, yep.
