Cassandra | Taylor Swift | The Tortured Poets Department | Reaction
This is a meditation on Taylor Swift's song, "Cassandra," from her new album, The Tortured Poets Department. It's just me, a reader of the classics, throwing in a few words about the figure of Cassandra, and enjoying the new album. #TTPD - I talk about poetry, prophecy, music, and aesthetic judgment.

David Schenck published "Zchenk Among Demons" in 1990. It's a lyrical philosophical investigation that is dialectical, poetic, and self-consciously mystical, in the sense that it aims to catalyze ineffable experience in the reader. It's hard to find as paperback, but it's available as an eBook for $7.99 the book deserves more readers and a bigger reputation! www.google.com/search?client=safari&...

Jordan Peterson made famous the phrase "crisis of meaning." No doubt that was the fallout of the postmodern thought that we were raised on. To recover meaning we have to risk making *too much* meaning. This is why reading novels and poetry is good practice they force us to learn to manage meaning. We read about a maiden's blonde hair and we ask, "Does it signify anything, or would it be 'readin...

Godward, have you read revelation chapter 20 lately? I have similar thoughts that you outlined here, especially with everything being F and G. Choose overt darkness or a false light, for instance. The way you talked about Josephus (which I agree with) is how I feel when people refuse to consider that we could be in that little season. It describes uncharted territory, and we are currently in that space. Like the 1st century. Like you describe. Saying this gets me in a lot of trouble, yet it is one of my strongest convictions these days.

@@pinnacleofglory yeah little season is interesting but… it also is hard to put together a timeline for that. Do you recommend one? Satan is definitely on the loose though, it seems.

    • @pinnacleofglory

@@GodwardPodcast I also struggle with the timeline, but maybe phantom time is real as some suggest? I don't have a timeline per se, but if you watch Asha Logos's video on Procopius it may shed some light. The video is titled: "The Secret History - Underground dungeons, murder, demonic visions, and the death of the roman empire" If Procopius is telling the truth, then it calls into question a lot of history that we have been taught. Which seems to fit into the narrative of satan deceiving the nations.

OMG, NOW I really wonder if Taylor has read Virgil and knows the story about Ajax and the abduction & rape of Cassandra. Because in the middle of the bros’ backlash about all the attention to Taylor during NFL games some absolute sicko made an AI film of her being gang raped by the crowd in a football stadium. I try to erase that from my brain, but I think it went pretty viral. I don’t think she ever made any statement about it, probably knowing anything she said would just further Streisand effect the whole thing. But she had to be furious about that. Anyone would be. I AM on her behalf. Love that you’re enough of a great Girl Dad to have the fuck the patriarchy keychain, BTW. And I’m GenX, so I totally spent my twenties in the alt rock era.

Here is another idea: Taylor Swift is using “Cassandra” in the archetypal Jungian way. In fact, Perhaps Taylor Swift is a Jungian? She mentions “sychronicity” in the manuscript. Your coincidental poem with the same name may be a synchronicity in a strictly Jungian way. I also experienced a synchronicity with this song as well.

@@GodwardPodcast AI. Democracy. There are potential "Troy's" everywhere. The term "Cassandra Complex" is often ascribed to environmental scientists. Take your pick. It seems to me Mrs Swift is using the "Cassandra" song to mean she is feeling RIGHT (but unheard) in her political views. She has been warning us about the right wing in this country for some time. "The family, the pure greed, the Christian Chorus Line". They all knew.

She herself has a "Cassandra Complex". She saw what was happening in our country. But, because she is the biggest pop star in history, her views on politics were not listened to or considered. Neither by those in the music industry or politics. It must be frustrating to be seen as crazy and "not believed" BECAUSE she is unquiely herself.

A lot similarities with Judy Garland as a performer. Being aware of the critiques and personal criticisms and embracing them in her performance, endears the audience. Both also professionally mismanaged and exploited out of royalties. Common among many artists. Judy made the fatal mistake of marrying her exploiters. Taylor has been able to expose, and embarrass hers during the height of her power. Judy would be in awe

Love this. Philosophy, Poetry, and Swift intersection is heaven on earth. BTW, the snakes in reputation was TS taking the slur by Kardashian and the internet and making it a reference of her empowerment. She often does that, like many artists before her. And the romance gossip, is just that. It’s not truths and she does take responsibility “who would want to marry me,” she sings. Blaming her for too many men and victimhood is what the sexist haters who no nothing about her or her music have been saying since she was a teenager. It’s just hate, and needs to be confronted as such.

Thanks for watching! Yeah, I haven't paid very much attention to the Kim drama, so appreciate the assist. Re: her dating history. I don't quite think it's "just hate." The multiple sexual partners thing shouldn't be presented as an ideal. There's a sense that women want to enjoy the pleasures of sexual liberation for ten or fifteen years and then, once they're tired of it, get married to Mr. Dependable. I don't think this is Taylor's case, obviously, and I think she's an outlier -- but a lot of the defense of her dating history takes the form of "premarital sex is great," and I don't agree with that. But this gets into faith-based weeds, and I can enjoy the music without worrying too much about it.

I loved this analysis of how poetry used to have music. What I like the most about Taylor is her capacity to put an image in my head. I love reading, and some of her songs are literally short books. When I heard “champagne problems” for the first time I was in the train station, then I saw how the narrator dropped her lover's hand, I pictured the astonished faces of families and friends… I love pop so much, it makes me happy, but songs that tell a story are truly an experience. Have you looked into Lana Del Rey? Some of her stuff is truly beautiful, almost ethereal.

Cassandra was the title that stuck out for me the most when I saw the whole track list as well. I assumed there would be a lot of ancient references in this record, and I definitely believe Taylor sees herself as a Cassandra in the music industry. I believe people see it as a song about Kim Kardashian is purely because of the snake reference. Kim called Taylor a snake and there was a whole thing were people posted snakes in relation to Taylor in 2016 where she was tried silenced and where she was not believed. I think there might be something there when it comes to the themes of the song, but I do believe the song is more general about the music industry as a whole. Also, great video! I’ll be checking the rest of your work!
