Although Malaysia is the entry point to the South China Sea, it doesn't control it. It is controlled by the US military with its naval base in Singapore. The US navy can block the Straits of Malacca to stop all Chinese shipping. The Indian navy has also threatened to block the north entry of this strait if there is hostility with China. Therefore, Malaysia is powerless to be of any assistance to China in this matter. This is why the recent Thai proposal for a landbridge across the Kra Isthmus in Southern Thailand is enthusiastically supported by China. This will defeat American attempts to block the Straits of Malacca (which is jointly owned by both Malaysia and Indonesia, not the US). This project will also threaten the prime position of the port of Singapore as a lot of ships will bypass it.

The biggest key to China making inroads into Malaysia's infrastructure is the dominance of the Malacca Straits. China is eyeing potential naval bases along Malaysia's command of the entire Malacca Straits, thus clamping down on the sea route to the Pacific and controlling the World's economic lane through Malacca Straits. Imagine China shutting down the Malacca Straits to the rest of the world.

The Malaysia Condition was created by Tun Razak. He came up with this grandiose idea that he will rob Peter to feed Paul. His successors sucked Peter dry to keep cronies entitled permanently. Only problem is Paul is permanently on welfare drip and a few cronies fabulously rich. Now Peter’s life-long work has been stolen and Paul remains life-long depended on welfare titbits and wants-more thanks to the half-Indian Muslim leader Mahathir who refined the scheme so that to do business you need to feed the cronies for licences, permits and shares of contracts.
Now Peter has nothing more to give. Many risk takers have left the country. The future is bleak. This is the story of Malaysia.

Ok so this story is done with limited research. There is a law in Malaysia that does not allow such large takeover's by foreign entity's to take place.
Btw, 1MDB is not a company nor an entity. It was just paper and with no value. On the issue of Proton, the purchase of a large shares was because the car company was dying and needed a revamp. Its not a major concern for Malaysia as the 49% is the maximum the company can own. Also all the Chinese companies that invested in Malaysia in your map are not really companies but investments. Bandar Malaysia, Forest City and other Chinese projects are still ongoing and taken over by local entities. Malaysia's case is different from those of other countries that were controlled by China.
Malaysia's investment laws, regulations and policies does not allow foreign investors to acquire totally a major business or business land. Therefore no matter how much Chinese investment in Malaysia, eventually ownership is still Malaysian. Peace ✌️

The reality today is either you got plenty of black gold or you have to seat for it through trade. And Malaysia as part of ASEAN is a major trading partner with China as well as her immediate ASEAN members; namely: Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. Are you still expecting free handouts? In which case, US with her free printing of the green backs may be possible. The railway connection via Laos-Thailand will benefit all the players along the route as transit time is definitely faster than by ships. Of course, the ASEAN players will have to improve their railway management considerably to enjoy the benefits.

    Dirty Politics 101
I'm nice to you because you're useful to me and you're nice to me because I'm useful to you, and both of us know it, no hard feelings it's strictly business.
All the smiles, warm handshakes and friendly pats on the back is a facade, it's for show only.
In the world of international politics and relations there is only Useful Target and Enemy, there is NO friendly. The enemy of my enemy can also be my "friend".
In this world there is no permanent friends and permanent enemies, only permanent SELF-INTERESTS.
ALL countries Big or small operate this way.
Addendum: Sanctions is but a temporary measure. You might not like your customer/enemy but you must ALWAYS love his money, because if you don't, others will... and steal your lunch.
    Simple as A-B-C, 1-2-3 and Do-Rei-Mi.

Just like when... Li Kwan Yu..... aka Singapore's PM.... actually only "bought" his Scholar title.. and then went into SG... and then "donated money back home"... to "teach the next generation".... (of workers and employees)... Which is why, he built a pipeline of people.. who followed him to give him those "respect"... But if you check the money.. where it came from... It was not HIS money.. it was the profit from those slaves... that worked.. and shipped via the customs. i.e. So this team of people, then built.. and marginalised the children of those workers.. in another areas. If you look at it from this way.. "is it truly fair" ?.... No. It is subjective. Depends on who shouts louder. (CNA Insider did an article recently on how LKY... did... what he did, and how it ended up as the situation between SG and the UK government at that time etc etc etc.... I thought that was fascinating ! )

Therefore, China must invest back to other nations including America particularly to ensure every human beings could benefit from this. The new economic model you talked about means breaking the PetroDollar hegemony and end of the MMT. The US will never let that happen although I think all other nations can gain some form of independence from the tyranny of the petrodollar inflation, recession and surge cycles by joining mutual bilateral agreements to trade in a shared or agreed currency. IMHO, Malaysia should be invited to join BRICS and Malaysian leaders should agree to that. A gold backed currency agreement backed by the giant Chinese and Indian economies should be good enough to transact energy + goods between growing nations of BRICS and Malaysia thereby making them safe from the whims of the masters of the dollar in US
