I have wonderful memories of this plane as a kid.
WOW, what was your favorite?
Same here. Remember being blessed as a toddler going to Europe several times with my mom to visit her family. Thanks for sharing.👍
What a great plane! First there was The Comet, then the 707! Beautiful and powerful!
The Boeing 707 was an incredible "piece of metal" just like the DC-8. First, you can start with Alvin "Tex" Johnston, the chief 707 test pilots, who introduced us to this iconic airplane in a "wild" kind of way. Then, the majority of airlines wanted in on this exciting Boeing approach, to challenge the De Havilland Comet 4 with a higher capacity airplane, that became the stepping stone to commercial jet travel. Although the DC-8 came shortly afterwards and was also successful, the 707 was still going to be a step ahead with selling many more airplanes. This is what really impressed the airlines.
The first time I flew on a 707 was 1980. First class New York to St.Croix USVI
How sweet it was!
I love you had a great time
Still a formidable design. Songs were written about the 707.
The Boeing 707 is truely the anchor of Jet Airline Aviation. It raised the bar for all manufacturers to excel beyond it's innovations. Without diminishing Boeing's achievements, it established a Base Line for all others to move from.
Very true
@@dontdeletehistorywhy does the b707 has longer range than the 757?
Great video! 707 was the first American commercial jet, truly iconic.
Recommend covering the first ever commercial jet, de Havilland Comet, and why it failed.
Thank you so much for watching, I have a video on the comet coming out soon. :))

we've come a long way since the days of single-aisle/narrowbody quadjets that cant fly nonstop for very long and make many stopovers when traversing continents, havent we.
I have to add one thing regarding the military variants of the 707. The 707 prototype, the Dash 80, was directly put into production as a military aircraft under the designation C-135 with the KC-135 tanker variant being the most produced. Between the Dash 80 prototype and the 707 production model quite a few changes were made, mainly the widening of the fuselage by a few inches and as such it's designated C-137 in the US military. Both models look the same to the naked eye and unless someone were to get up close with a measuring tape they couldn't tell the difference.
The -135 was mainly built as a tanker variant, the KC-135, although a small batch of non tanker frames were built and put into service in the 60s and still serving in limited numbers and capacity.
The -137 were built or converted from previous civilian ownership model, the 707, in significantly larger numbers in the military than the non tanker -135 were to do much of the other functions not related to air refueling, the E-3, E-6 and E-8 for electronic warfare and airspace monitoring, the former distinguished by the huge circular dome, the VC-137 "Air Force One" air frames.
I think this information is correct but I could be missing something.
Great info ℹ️, thank you very much 🫡
For your note, the last two digits in ‘120’ and ‘320’ denote customer ID number, which in this case is the designation for Boeing prototype (20). PAA is 21, AA, 23, TWA, 31, and so on. In later years, Boeing added letters of the alphabet to meet a growing list of customers. For example, H4 denotes Southwest Airlines, AS, Ryanair.
In all, Boeing made four commercial versions of the 707, namely series 100, 200, 300 and 400. You do not need to add ‘20’ to identify each series.
That said, you can successfully argue that the Boeing 720 is in fact a Boeing 707-000 (a fifth version), because that’s precisely the case. UAL was the launch customer, and did not want ‘707’ in the name for marketing purposes. You see, 707’s are a bit faster than DC-8’s (the flagship of UAL’s jet fleet at the time), and UAL didn’t want the public to make that connection when it highlighted the speed of the 720 (which was the fastest 707 version of all). Point: all of UAL’s key competitors flew 707’s instead of 8’s, these being AA, TWA, CO and PAA.
The DC-8-62 would eventually settle the score with the 707-300. It could cruise just as fast, only farther, and… it was stronger and far more durable. (UAL flew the -62 as well.)
Ohh wow!! Thank you soo much for your information really on point 😎🫡
The DC-8 !!!!
Yes yes 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
…..and then the Convairs, 880 and 990……and then…

Fantastic Video! Just discovered your channel and subscribed.
Thanks and welcome
very nicely done! your running commentary is impressive; articulate and concise, yet expansive. well done.
Thank you very much 🫡
Cool presentation. My first flight was on a 707 from ORD to LAX in December. The climatic contrast was cinematic. Like landing in OZ.
Thank you for sharing. Thank you for watching
A far better aircraft than the De Havilland Comet. The 707 really was the father of all modern jet airliners.
Well written and well presented. I had the privilege of flying the B707-320b and can tell you it was a marvel. I accumulated close to 5000 hours and she never let me down! I was hoping you would have put a picture of Tex doing a barrel roll during initial testing!😂
Thank you very much. Honestly the barrel deserves it own video lol. And I am happy you enjoyed this aircraft 🫡
Used to work on the kc-135 tanker program. Agree. The 707 is a very over-engineered piece of machinery even in today's standard, thus the superior reliability. Truly a beast.
@@aerohk Boeing was really ahead of its time. And thank you for your service sir 🫡
Dash80 is the grandfather of the modern american jetliner. It set the basic layout for all subsequent jetliners built.
Very true
@@dontdeletehistory you can go even further back to the B-47 if we want to go to the very beginning. Good job.

4:08 I think you meant to say "a switch to higher bypass ratio" as oppposed to "lower bypass ratio". Engine manufacturers have been steadily been increasing the bypass ratio for improved performance, not lowering the bypass ratio.
masterfully made documentary! I hope that your channel, knowledge, skill and expertise all continue to grow!
Wow, thank you!
Imagine being a airline pilot, driving prop planes all your career, then you got to learn how to fly 707s, without simulators which didn't come along until later. A whole new world for the pilot.
😳🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠🧠
They had simulators for it at least in 1958. There were simulators for the DC7 too
This is the most complete video on the 707 I've see to date!
I’m glad you think so. I am happy to have you as a viewer 😎
The closest we've got the 707 is the a340😢
🤔🤔🤔
Great video! The 707 was indeed a milestone in aviation history. My 1st airplane ride was on a 707-300, Aer Lingus from JFK to SNN Ireland. My next two flights were cool too- a BEA Vickers Vanguard from Dublin to London and a VC-10 for the trip home. I always liked the 707 over the DC-8, but the DC-8 was a great machine too, and since it was better suited to stretch models it enjoyed a longer service life. The ventral fin on the bottom of the rear fuselage wasn't in the original plan but the Britts required more directional stability when BOAC opted for the more powerful RR Conway engines (same as the VC-10). That model became the 707-420. The ventral fin became standard on all -300s and -400s. One correction, Fowler flaps are trailing edge flaps, the 707 used Krueger flaps at the leading edge. It's descendant, the 727 used Krueger flaps inboard and slats outboard. Keep up the good work!
Thank you soo much sir 🫡. Thank you for watching. It seem to be back then Boeing was really pack in engineering.
@@dontdeletehistory They were. They built great airplanes and made money. Now they just want money and will do whatever they can with airplanes if they think it'll be pay.
@@gerardmoran9560 🤦🏽♂️, they used to be so reputable.
@@dontdeletehistory I can hold out hope, but it's a bit depressing. They know they can fall back on their military contracts. We'll see.

Not sure what you mean by a built in air start system but the 707-323s I flew used external air carts for engine starts. There were NO APUs.

Neither Boeing nor competition had APUs in those days. The 707 is iconic, a milestone
