Hey James, this is a very good video about Ethiopia's history in relation to this game. Your pronunciation shall be forgiven ;)
I consider Menelik II one of Africas greatest leaders ever!
When he saw European countries conquering one African region after the other, he wrote to the colonizing governments, informing them which area he regarded as part of his kingdom, and therefore was not to be invaded by them.
He was able to acquire modern weapons, as you stated from Russia, while the other colonisers conspired not to sell any to him.
He was able to unite the many peoples of Ethiopia and fight for their independence.
Even after the victory of Adwa the Europeans thought it would only be a question of time until they could carve up Ethiopia amongst themselves and plotted against him, whenever they could.
But even their own diplomats in Addis Ababa all had to admit that he was a very wise and visionary leader!

Thanks for the feedback and thanks for sharing your knowledge :). What I found very interesting about him (and maybe I should've covered more in the video) is even as great as he was, he was not without his faults as it seems even he committed atrocities in his conquests. Despite all of that, he still managed to unify Ethiopian peoples against the outside powers and established a great base for modern-day Ethiopia

@@MohProbs most definitely, atrocities always happen during territorial expansions such as these. Some local kings could be integrated diplomatically without violence and others had to be coerced militarily.
But it is also true without a doubt that had Menelik not expanded his kingdom all those regions would have been colonised by the British, French and Italians. You could say that it was the Europeans who forced him to act this way. And let's not forget that all those regions had (trade-)relations/historical connections with the Ethiopian kings for many centuries

Fun fact: Haile Selassie and his wife are the only persons wich Queen Elizabeth II and her husband have bowed to as a royal couple

Also in 6:33 you said that Ethiopia was the only african nation to avoid european colonization but Liberia also avoided colonization by europeans since they were colonized by the US

Oooh very cool fact! If I ever do a Civ 5 spotlight on Haile, I'll be sure to credit you :). Also - you got me there! You are indeed correct, Liberia was colonized by the US - still making Ethiopia very unique tho!

I really love your vids and quite sad to see you don't post videos anymore. I already watched all your videos and was hoping for more. And your videos aren't just entertaining but also educational and great

Thank you Justin - I really do appreciate the kind words. I do intend on posting more (including vids on similar games like Old World, Humankind, etc), but my thing with Civ is that it's a game I binge - so I'll play non-stop one week and not play for a long time after. I've also been posting and working on my other channel so that's been taking up time, but I definitely intend on posting more when I get less busy at work!

Sure! But just fyi it's a general gaming channel - not really focused on civ or history or anything so might not be everyone's cup of tea. ua-cam.com/users/JamesLikesGames
