"There is no way, in mortality, to get through it by yourself. You can't push, you can't shove, you can't design, you can't do any of that. Even if you're not on drugs! You must turn yourself over to a loving Heavenly Father and then there is this capacity for the Savior to enable you - he kind of does internal work and changes you. You think 'This is different. I'm different than I was.' And I give them the credit. Luckily, they caught me before I passed away and helped me out."

I think one line of thought that used to prevail in the minds of people who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was to NOT share their past sins because it might send a message to some that it is OK to party now and repent later. I absolutely love how the culture and thought process has slowly changed over the years. It is invaluable to me to hear directly from people who have had these experiences. Knowledge is power and I have loved hearing all these stories the ugly parts as well as the beautiful! Each story reaffirms to me that God is aware of each one of his children and there is always hope because of the Atonement of Christ

Melanie, I wish I could do a Part 2 regarding my spiritual journey. Father was so long suffering and my Savior has made it known unto me that He was the one who literally carried me out of the darkness of addiction.

8:15 I’m so glad you continued to go to church through your addiction. I hope every addicted person knows they’re welcome and loved at church. We’re all sinners.

As I was listening to this story it began to sound really familiar and I was going to ask if his story was one of the addiction recovery stories and then he confirmed it. I’m so grateful for this podcast. Although my struggles are different and I have never left the Church I am always inspired and uplifted from these experiences. The Lord is gathering his sheep and everyone is invited. Thank you for sharing!

Amen about Bishops. They have all kinds of life experience and the Mantle of the Bishop is so powerful. They have so much discernment!

Holy wow! Awesome discussion! Healthy discussion like this shows that the atonement of Christ makes it so that we don't have to be ashamed of the mistakes we make, because through the atonement it is as if we didn't make them.

That’s pretty amazing to have recovered from the strong opiates you both were addicted to. I became dependent on a much weaker opiate and it was hell getting off it.

these past few episodes have been amazing. I think I might pull some clips from these and share with the youth in our ward. Ashley you made some great comments too about the church being restrictive vs. drugs..

Here is something that you can pass on to people who make comments about how bishops don't have life experience. It blows my mind to hear something like that. My bishop in my ward has been divorced. Him and why his wife have both been divorced and are now married to each other and they know what it is like to combine families and to go through that whole experience. None of their children are interested in the church and their children are grown etc... If there is any Bishop they can relate to more people. ALOT of people like him and people like him are bishops. Because of his personal life experience, he has been an absolute blessing to so many people in our ward and can relate to them.

@@Come.Back.Podcast How is what I said "disrespectful"? I simply said Jesus has the power to help a person and save a person eternally, even if they don't ever go through a masonic temple ceremony with secret handshakes. The Jesus of the Bible tore the temple curtain and destroyed the need for an earthly priesthood. We can go to Jesus directly!
