"What I think and what I can report are two different things." Facts over feelings. I'm an independent Libertarian. MSM is completely biased. I love Matt Taibbi
I appreciated listening to what he had to say. One important thing he's left out of his analysis of the media (MSM - mainstream media) is their relationship with the government and the advertisers (sponsors). With regard to their relationship to the government they have been recognized as an organ of state propaganda. Journalists bribed (encouraged) to write articles favorably slanted to the administration's ( or covert state's ) agenda. Too long have they been in the position of the "Boy Who Cried Wolf", now nobody believes anything they have to say or the government has to say. Propaganda/Media has long, now for decades, been recognized as a tool for the manipulation of the masses so much so that no one will even accept a statement from the government or media without clear proof; even when the government plays it's last card in the game. Namely, we must keep the source of the information secret to protect the source and the methods of acquisition. It's gotten even worse for the media. Where even subtler methods are used, that is to say the coverage has a biased slant, unless a person's initial opinion or appraisal of the narrative is already aligned the narrative is discounted or outright rejected. Of course they can still fool some of the people some of the time. They are especially good at fooling themselves when living in the echo chamber of their own making. There is no better case study you could devise than the last USA presidential election. Both the media and the players have managed to fool themselves as to their own correctness, righteousness and virtue. In the end All Is Vanity .. what is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted. Clearly, as Hillary would say, MSM must also be wary on stepping on the toes of it's sponsors or advertisers. Never more so with the declining readership of newspapers or peoples lack of interest in ever more blatant biased opinion in other media. The difference between profit, viability or failure of these dying media have never been so slim. Thus they are no longer independent and so not reliable in their journalistic coverage and opinion. Finally, clear dry facts have never been a way to maximize readership/listener. The people crave sensationalism or circus. In the long run, the appeal to the baser emotions runs thin and ends in an ever devolving spiral of credibility and No News Is Good News! If you have concern over bias, lack of integrity or professionalism of the CBC, I beg you to examine the record and coverage of the CBC on the USA presidential election and judge for yourself whether there was inherent bias in the analysis and coverage. +Casanova - Thanks. It was not my intent to advocate anything in my post. Rather, it started as an analysis of some points that I felt Mr. Tabbi missed in this interview. I feel one can tell, from Mr. Tabbi, that schools of journalism still stress qualities such as accuracy, facts and integrity in reporting. As you seem to point out it's the political and financial interests that tend to meddle and muddle. Unfortunately, I don't see a clear way of getting around the outside interest's interference in a media that reaches a concentration of people; just too easy and tempting a target. One might fend off the financial interests but the government ultimately carries a very big stick. To limit financial interest influence one might consider something along the lines of publicly funded broadcasting (PBS); though that seems to be an easier job than funding journalism. The internet, in the recent past, has afforded some people a chance to speak out and reach larger audiences with limited resources. Still resources are needed to reach the level of a professional service. If you've been keeping up with the news you'll see that financial and political interference and control of the internet is taking shape in American and Europe. It's already controlled in some countries such as China and I'm afraid that Western governments have come to the conclusion that something providing a narrative they can't control is a threat. On the smaller side, people and small organizations have sprung up providing news, opinion, analysis and commentary on subjects of social, political and economic importance. Their reach is often greater than MSM and seems to be growing. Their growth seems to be in direct correlation to their integrity .. even if they're somewhat biased or even outrageous. Some go as far as eschewing advertising and depend on viewer contribution and the sale of small items, such as T-shirts, to aid their financial costs. I'm sorry I can't point out any UA-cam channel that aspires to you lofty goal of a professional news organization that is free of the influence of the powerful or monied interests. My knowledge of the internet is not that large. However, if you're willing to look at one with aspirations, but self admitted bias, then look at "Rebel Media". It's focus tends towards Canadian content but is not limited to it. On the good side it provides viewpoints and covers topics that MSM would find itself uncomfortable presenting. I would also suggest looking into their channel associates .. in particular for some exercise in philosophy and critical thinking "Stefan Molyneux". Happy New Year!
This guy was interesting. One problem: CBC appear to like interviewing (or having as panelists) other journalists. So we have a journalist interviewing a journalist on the subject of journalists being trapped in a thought bubble and becoming disconnected from reality. You see the problem.
Yep and nowhere more evident than amoung the media covering the US presidential election ... the major media outlets. Not to mention the group think seen in places like California and the US east coast. Considering the reactions of some groups of people I'm concerned about the effects of medication on peoples perception and emotions. I'm also considering reactions in relation to indoctrination of people, especially the young, in schools and universities .. even in Canada .. Liberal/Socialist agenda's.
So watch something else...........look for more of Taibbi's pieces and find more reasonable critique of Trump who in time will have either the media ignore him or be banned...........not good either way.

Taibbi says the media has had, in the past, to be careful about what they say as if that is not a good thing. But, on the other hand, he talks about releasing this 35 page document without anything to substantiate it. Trump has made it an anything goes proposition for which the media gave him more than enough air time during the campaign. However, now that the table has turned, the media is questioning the veracity of the document?
I keep hearing about class divisions, class warfare, class resentments... But I'm a little bit hooked on the word "class" in a kind of old-school way. People don't have class. Media, politics, the "American People", in a very general sense, aren't classy. Reporters didn't write about JFK and Marilyn because rooting around like a wild pig in anyone's personal life just wasn't classy. It's not left or right, rich or poor, black- white-brown or gender-related. I'm not saying old-time ethics are right or wrong, but in a lot of ways they worked. Now we're enemies, on one side or the other. We got no class.
Nice reasoned and level take on the election and the media especially given the atmosphere at the time. Also,, it's funny to me how CBC gets its funding from the federal government.. 🤔
Matt, you and many mainstream media are out of touch with trending sentiment. ignoring and even condescending excuses prevent seeing the broad malcontent. Stop feeling threatened and start finding and reporting people's lives and feelings not just glossy 'click' facts.
It’s not that most of us are unappreciative of Donald Trump, but he did point out that the infamous “Deep State (Department)” is well, alive and needs more of that tweaking that Trump does so well.
Funny how the vast majority of comments are just praising Matt without any discussion of the topics covered. America is such a pathetically shallow and hero worshipping wasteland.
The problem is that people who don't know call anyone saying anything they disagree with illegitimate media. You form your opinions then search for the news and entertainment to match. We don't grow or challenge ourselves anymore. Of course, full disclosure, I see Conservatives as being far worse for that kind of thing then Liberals but that's an admitted personal bias
"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it" Disagree though, on the latter remark. Conservatives don't really get offended about Liberal opinions. Most conservatives don't care if you support a Democratic politician, support abortions, believe in white privilege ect. Thinking Trump is ok is not an ok opinion among the Left.
I disagree with some of what Matt is saying, but for the most part he is right. I thoroughly respect Matt's recent pushback against genuine racists like Robin DiAngelo and her views about "white fragility" that would never be acceptable were they directed at non-whites. He seems capable of talking about Trump without looking like he's about to have a heart attack, but he is feeding into the false narrative that Trump is some bumbling fool who doesn't know exactly what he is doing. Trump plays to win and they vastly underestimate how much skill is required to be a leader and maintain wealth. Even if someone hands out millions randomly, the average person lacks financial discipline and is broke again within a few years. People don't "accidentally" become president, but it sure feels good to blame everything on pure luck instead of having to understand the opponent's strategy. Sadly, this lack of understanding will very likely lead to a lot of confused faces should Trump win re-election.

Taibbi was right about the Main Stream Media, they are extremely biased in many instances, the CBC is high on my list of offenders as such, including you Mesley. The CBC is always front and center when it comes to ramming Left Wing crap down the throats of the electorate, an institution we could well do without; hopefully the Conservatives will finally take care of the matter next time round.
The problem with "mainstream media" has been around since the beginning of mainstream media. Taibbi is referring to the way mainstream media is not living up to journalistic standards. The problem is that "non-mainstream media" will certainly not do the job of mainstream media better.
A problem with it will sort itself out is the number of states controlled by the GOP and that congress has been GOP for all but two years of the Obama admin. The failure to see Congress as the significant factor is an indication that the problem isn't being diagnosed.
But isn’t instructing the GRU (the ENEMY) to break into a high level server through a back Door and therefore, breaking the sovereignty laws of our Country? Or any country, for that matter!
Pretty amazing so many of my friends tell me how smart and enlightened this guy is. He might not be as bad as mainstream news, but he’s missing a whole lot of points and oversimplifies many of the issues. Ignorance or just scared, either way it’s bad
Intellectuals are always about "what should be" and have their heads so far up there own arses they miss "what is". Even though this dude is saying lots of right on the money statements about "what is" he is still being dragged into "the shoulds". My advice to any journalist or politician or joe blow is to stay present.
I agree about intellectuals being out of touch. The vast majority of people in society are by necessity occupied with practical considerations such as job, family, and basic survival. Yet shouldn't somebody be focused on looking beyond the present, toward improving society and solving its problems? The practical view (what is) is important, but a society is not complete without seeking to progress and move forward either. While it's correct to criticise elites for being out of touch with the pragmatic and not understanding most people lack the luxury of straying from the realm of "what is", but that's not a valid reason to abandon intellectual pursuits any more than it is for the average person to abandon practical, pragmatic pursuits.
UGH NOT RACIAL DISCONTENT! IT IS EAST COAST, WEST COAST DOMINATION ON THE "RIGHT" WAY THE COUNTRY SHOULD GO! NO! RUN YOUR OWN STATE INTO THE GROUND NOT THE COUNTRY!
Stockholm syndrome? You mean more like pay-to-play and access syndrome. Taibbi is a good journalist but if Matt can't see that primary factor in poor reporting is the ridiculous amount of cash being handed out to certain "journalist' and news personalities, then he's practicing in self-deceit.

The CBC is always front and center when it comes to ramming Left Wing crap down the throats of the electorate, an institution we could well do without; hopefully the Conservatives will finally take care of the matter next time round.
Yep.
The problem with "mainstream media" has been around since the beginning of mainstream media. Taibbi is referring to the way mainstream media is not living up to journalistic standards. The problem is that "non-mainstream media" will certainly not do the job of mainstream media better.
Pick your facts, pick your truth, pick your reality.

A problem with it will sort itself out is the number of states controlled by the GOP and that congress has been GOP for all but two years of the Obama admin. The failure to see Congress as the significant factor is an indication that the problem isn't being diagnosed.
But isn’t instructing the GRU (the ENEMY)
to break into a high level server through a back Door
and therefore, breaking the sovereignty laws of our Country?
Or any country, for that matter!
Hi nj... What's the context for these good questions your asking re GRU? I'm 200% unfamiliar with this...

Canada someone built a country and nobody came USA is tired of taking care of Canada.
PROVED WRONG! ADMIT IT! TELL THE COUNTRY YOUR SORRY!
NOT ALL OVER THE MAP! HIS POLICIES HE HAS TALKED ABOUT SINCE THE 80'S!
Long live eugenics and communism
There is a ton of evidence.

PC bullcrap! NO EVIDENCE! BUt you PC throwing out slander!
What are you even talking about?
Your comment makes absolutely no sense in the context of the subject discussed in the video.
Your co-host is dragging you down! Your're a very good journalist but you co-host seems conspired to destroy you. I like your analysis but, hers is a waste of my time.
Left wing video.
Great conversation
