How well did it work was the weight applied on top or was it hanging at the bottom
They should both work but applying load from top will remove the possibility of a local failure due to loaded area being too small.

Do you think this would work better with hot glue or wood glue
hot glue
Wood gkue is better but hit glue is faster
What's the length of the bridge and the height?
