- 0:17 - Oscar Wilde is better known for his sarcasm and wit than for his fairy tales, but this beautiful story reveals the gentler side of his character. It was first published in 1888 and has been a family favourite ever since.
12:37 - Written by Oscar Wilde, Illustrated by Peter Dennis, Read by Tim Curry.
THIS was my magical childhood. I remember crying listening to this on cassette tape. Til now i can recite along to this entire story by heart. Thank you so much for making this available. A part of my childhood survives because of yoU!
I have so many great memories of listening to the Storyteller tapes. This story was my favourite - wonderfully narrated by Tim Curry and so moving. It's a joy to hear this again.
just incredible!! the Storyteller was the best thing I ever had as a kid. I'm nearly 40 now and still think of it often and this story was the most beautiful and sad. Tim curry is amazing!! RIP Tim. So special to see all the comments. the world we live in today is so different. unfortunately kids of the future will never appreciate this. Does anyone remember "Petrushka"?? that one was scary AF! Same with "The Goblin Rat"
Tim Curry isn't dead yet.
Tim's still alive. Met him many times this and last year.
This one used to give me a lump in the throat as a 6 year old 😂
I love Oscar Wilde and when I saw this 'free' on the front of a magazine in 1988 I bought it for my kids and used to play it for them at bedtime, it never failed to make me cry! I've listened to other versions of it but none of them have the effect Tim Curry does.
Agree. This (despite being slightly abridged) is by far the best audio version of the beautiful story.
I had the whole collection as a child and this was probably my favourite. Beautifully read - had no idea it was Tim Curry.
I love the happy prince! melancholic, beautiful masterpiece! I like Tim Curry´s gentle voice:-)
I never knew this was Tim Curry! :)
This made me cry i could not listen to it for years!! So beautiful but sooo sad esp the way Tim reads it.
Now this story makes a grown man cry......... a little bit, but no tears.
I can't believe they are all here and done so magnificently. Lashings of thanks for uploading them 😀☺️
I had the Storyteller audio cassettes and books when I was young. This brought back some great memories. Thanks so much for posting it :)

Wilde about oscar
The happy Prince more like the unhappy prince
Could you please list the book title that the story and illustrations are from? I believe it is from a compilation of fairytales that I have been searching for, for a while. But though I remember the illustrations, and the name of the story, I cannot remember the book's title or publication date.
+Kasey Panighetti Storyteller magazine - came with audio cassettes in the 80s. In Australian and New Zeqaland it was called Storytime.
what is the classical song called? the one right at the end?
supper
Just get rid of the dorky music in the beginning. Why do videos always have the worst intros?
These are originally cassette tapes from the 80’s… what can i say the 80’s where dorky haha
