The tried and true method I measure whether or not a genre/subgenre is dying by is whether or not the artists are playing it too safe, going off on weird experiments and/or selling out - Trap artists are guilty of ALL of these right now and they're trying desperately to keep this trend alive; when it's clear the biggest names don't have the steam and newcomers don't have the creativity or star power, so they exploit drama and gimmicks A lot of Trap's greatest attributes were it's worst, it's accessibility was refreshing as it tapped into a youth culture obsessed with technology - a zeitgeist where kids were making and producing their own bedroom beats, as cool as that is it lead to oversaturation way too fast and that Atlanta style flow became so redundant because anybody could do it and the formula was always there. It's always been formulaic to a degree and it was only natural something so paint-by-numbers would run itself dry. Honestly I always found other genres that came from DIY tech and internet culture more exciting, other forms of Rap, Bedroom Pop, Hyper Pop, lots of Indie. It's cool the influence this style has had, however I couldn't care less to see it disappear
@@SubNada Absolutely true, it's more exciting than anything. I think that the next huge Rap star is gonna have to have that star quality of keeping their integrity in tact whilst delivering something catchy in a fresh, innovative way. There's a limitless amount of music to borrow from, it could be a total dark horse. What remains now is to see if the fans embrace this next wave or if they stay stuck in their ways, believing what they grew up with to be more pure. If anything, that's what would "kill" Rap charts wise because it's what killed every other genre. An aging demographic couldn't compete with youth culture and the profitability of those genres started plummeting. So they turned stagnant to stay in touch with the audience they had left and they kept the same big names running things, in constant rotation on all stations and headlining every major festival
Trap isn’t dead. It’s just oversaturated. Traps influence has been going strong for 20 years from TI to Thug. It will evolve in my opinion to more rnb and depth to lyrics. We see that with Hunxho and also Gunna whose sounds have matured. Every genre from pop to country is on trap drums or trap influenced cadence/flows. Rap as a whole is going through its Hair Metal Phase, where it was all about the spectacle and maximalism of the gimmick. Next will be its grunge phase where it’s all internal and introspective. Melodic rap will take over fully though as rappers are becoming more singer songwriters now. IMO
@@Amyus2346 I don't necessarily agree with all of this but you're right about its influence and it'd be cool to see it evolve. To be clear - I'm no expert on Trap as a genre, know enough to understand its roots and a lotta the artists, so I'm coming at this more from an outsider POV. I'm sure its influence will stay around but I don't see the genre itself [without at least going through a drastic evolution] getting continual chart success and the trend of Trap is relatively new, regardless of it's history. When I say a genre has died or is dying, it's simply chart watcher dork language for "it's not getting on Billboard as highly/as much/anymore". That could change with time obviously, however in my eyes it's very clear that it's waning in popular relevancy. The real question is does that matter? If there's another big Rap star, the pipedream is that it's gonna be something more introspective, visceral. Rap's "Grunge" phase as you put it. Haven't we already had this with 90s Gangsta Rap and Soundcloud Emo?
