Thank you Lindsey for another great podcast 👏 for sharing you insight. I feel like you speak up on issues that are near and dear to my heart. Keep advocated for those who have been silenced. I hope others are enlighted and gain back their voices.

Thank you for your care and support. I have no plans to stop talking and advocating for those who have not yet found the way to speak up. Some never may, and that's ok because I will do what I can to be a voice for them. xoxo

My childhood right there. 4+ hours of farm chores, maybe 3 hours of self education (Saxon math, no science, and iblp materials and something for reading but i can't remember it) and then another 4-6 hours of farm chores.

I learned so much about life and none of it applies to daily life on the outside.

oof. I am so so sorry this was your life. It's SO infuriating. I get so tired of others saying their lives and homeschool in ATI were so wonderful meanwhile denying us our truth that it wasn't. I'm not sure why it's so hard to believe both experiences can be true. I hope you're doing well and are thriving as you have made your own way in this world. xoxo

It is really difficult especially when they start talking about "rights". Those that argue against mainstream school just make me shake my head..... Do you really think every kid is safe at home? You are foolish if you think blood family is always healthy and safe.... My work in prevention and intervention tells me it is more commonly not safe....

MORE commonly not safe?? That’s hard to hear… but unfortunately not hard to believe.

The prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) tells us that children are not going growing up in safe, healthy homes. The CDC reports that 61% of Americans of have an ACE score of 4 or more. www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/aces/pdf/vs-1105-aces-H.pdf@@preyvspredatorpodcast

it's evangelicals and fundamentalists that will say home life is safer. They truly believe it because abuse and neglect are normal in their world. It is normal because it is validated by scripture and/or the misinterpretation of scripture. Children are not generally safer in a christian homeschool situation. Doesn't mean ALL homeschoolers are bad, it simply means we need oversight to assure the children's physical, mental and emotional well being if they are to remain at home.

I hope you realize that educational abuse/neglect is happening in public schools too? I have a homeschool child who goes up to the public school for one class a day so he can participate in a certain club. It’s turning out to be a bit of a joke. A good 50% class hours have been spent on administrative tasks and chores around the school. OK we’re calling that service hours I guess, but how is that different from kids doing chores at home? 😁 I ask every day - what did you learn in class. I think a few homeschool families who are rotten are the least of our worries. Public school is not the standard to measure ourselves too. I understand you are not saying homeschooling is bad. I just think our problems are more systemic.

I've not once said school is safe. I've not once said ALL homeschooling is bad. There is a balance that is found lacking in public schools and in homeschooling. We simply DO NOT have strong, effective oversight in either space. It is disappointing to see how the youth of our country are falling through the cracks because religion demands we have the children yet fails to help us raise strong, smart, well adjusted children as they navigate into this world.
I think there are many important reasons for a parent to homeschool their children in these crazy, unsafe times. However, there are a lot of children (myself included) who would have been safer in an environment where my bruises would have been seen and reported. Each situation is different, I respect that. Pendulum swinging on each issue helps no one. We need to all come to the table and figure out how to keep our kids safe and smart. :-)

The truth is your neighbors should have noticed, people at your church, the local librarian - people should notice when kids are being isolated and abused. We are so broken as a society. Communities used to raise children together. In some places they still do. We weren’t here a month before everyone in our small town knew our kids, and we have local kids coming by daily. I just feel we expect too much from government. They can’t even meet their current obligations. We need to be better citizens.
