  • Lots of animation programs can output your animation as a PNG sequence. Although Final Cut Pro doesn't work with them natively. But there is a workaround! I'll show you how I use PNG sequences in Final Cut Pro, in today's episode of the Expat Animator!

Now that those images are basically turned into a video, how would I go about exporting the file to keep the transparent background. I want to make short animations to sell that will be compatible on other programs.

Are you wanting to export from FCP? I don't think it can export with transparency. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I have been using CreateStudioPro if I need to export with transparency. Remember that .mov format can support transparency while mp4 does not, as far as I can tell anyway. Also, make sure you don't have the background layer visibility turned off.

OK, nevermind, I just found a YT video showing how exporting with Apple ProRes 4444 will export a .mov file with transparency from FCP. So try that!

I'm doing this with a numbered png sequence, but the images are out of order. About every tenth image is not in its sequence, and requires manual reshuffling. Is there some kind of trick I'm missing? It happens with sequences rendered from Lightwave and OpenToonz, so it's not the files themselves.

It might be that you need to number your images with some zeroes in the front of the file names. For instance, 001.jpg, 002.jpg, 003.jpg etc. This might help the order if you are naming them 1.jpg, 2.jpg, because when you get to 10.jpg it can get out of order. Let me know if that helps.

Is there a way to stabilize a jpeg sequence in final cut? I tried creating a compound clip but still there no option for stabilize. Thanks

Wow good question! I’m not sure but maybe try exporting the sequence as a movie and bring that back in? Seems redundant but might work? Let me know if you figure it out.

Final Cut Pro X user This works off and on for me. I did it twice. But it won’t keep on doing it. I can’t figure out the problem

    • @ExpatAnimator

Hmmm. I haven’t tried that trick in a while. Have you tried installing the latest FCP update and do a restart? Those are my first troubleshooting steps.

Do you have your image file names numbered in order? Try 001.jpg, 002.jpg, 003.jpg etc. A batch rename will speed that up.
