My late mam born in 1920 in Blackhall Colliery made the Christmas cakes in September and "fed" them with cold strong tea she never weighed anything of the ingredients and mixed them in a huge bowl with her bare hands, honestly Rob they were delicious
Made the simple fruit loaf and my husband said he preferred it to any other fruit cake/ loaf he’s ever had. And fruit loaf is his absolute favourite xxx
Using either old equipment which has passed through the family or recipes that have been passed down - are precious. A lovely way to remember previous generations with affection.
Can totally see where you're coming from with the tin Dave, my mam's cooking tins and trays were burnt black from being used in a coal fired range. I can clearly recall my mam and aunt may's all day baking sessions in November preparing and baking cakes and Christmas puddings for various family members. Happy days and of course I got to clean the leftover mix from the mixing bowls 😋
At last a real Christmas cake with a reasonable cost ! I live in France and ordered one thru a mail order company and it costs me 30 euros 😱 I will definitely try this 🤗 thank You 😊💐🌈🤩
Cinnamon and allspice most definitely the smell of Christmas. Here in my country Portugal it's cinnamon and sugar as most of our Christmas treats have those two ingredients
Beautiful cake ! Your Great Aunt and your Dad were watching over you, as you did this Demonstration. Much love and have a Blessed Christmas, from Torbay, North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand
Loved hearing the history of your baking tin Dave, I wonder how many delicious cakes it’s helped produce over the years. Look forward to seeing it being decorated in a few weeks time. I won’t be trying this recipe, as sadly it’s way too large for me on my own, but hope everyone who does choose to make it thoroughly enjoys the fruits of their labour.😋 Thanks as always for sharing Dave, much appreciated. 👨🏼🍳👍👌
What a wonderful recipe. I’ve never tried heating the fruit so I will definitely give this recipe a try this year. Think I will try it with rum😊Thank you. Love all your recipes
I love xmas cake. Iv made mine and been feeding for a while. Got 10 as gifts 🎁 😊 I use amaretto as i like almond 😊 great recipie. Compared to the shops it's cheap 😊
Wow Tracey you’ve been busy, where on earth do you store that lot, you must have a lovely big kitchen. I hope both yourself & all your gift recipients thoroughly enjoy! 👩🏻🍳👌
@davidmurphy816 I just wrap them all up and stack them in a box on the work bench lol my kitchen is not huge. Iv also made small 4 inch ones as well which don't take much room up 😊 I make little hampers for friends family and neighbours with home made things like jam etc I'm doing fudge this year for the first time 😅 so fingers crossed it all works out.
@ Hi Tracey.👋 Oh I was just imagining how much space eleven full size cakes would take up in my wee pokey kitchen!🫣😂 I didn’t realise it was you Tracey, I spoke to you previously on Cheryl’s What’s for Tea channel, when you were thinking of making fudge, did you follow up on the link to the Carnation recipe website after our discussion?
@davidmurphy816 iv literally just gone back on Cheryl's vid to see if it was you as recognised the name 😂 Iv been on and got the recipe details yes so il make closer to Xmas. I'm vlogging the things I make on my channel so looking fwd to putting them together 😊
Hve to confess to watching this several times before committing to the cake. Now baked and being fed with my bosses' brandy which was Christmas gift from years ago. Smells and looks divine.
What a beautiful looking cake and a wonderful history your tin has , you can’t beat the nostalgia that tin has made so many happy memories for you family long may it continue Dave , I can see you grandaughter taking it on down the line 🤞thank you for the cake recipe and the story , Amanda xx
My brother still uses mums enamel casserole dish for his meat it belonged to our Grandmother he's intending to pass it to one of his kids .. treasure that cake tin 👍👍
What a wonderful story about the tin! That is so lovely. It adds to the love that goes into this recipe. I've read a few lovely suggestions in the comments and I will be making two. One with Amaretto and one with Earl Grey tea.
Hi Dave, so lovely your using your great Aunt Bells baking tin and carrying on your family tradition. I have my Grandma's large baking bowl, my Dad told me when he was small his Mum would make all her cakes and pastries In this bowl. He said he looked forward to Fridays as that was her baking day. Now I make all my cake In It and hopefully I can pass It on to one of my family members. 👪 thank you for sharing. Valerie.
Nice to see a Christmas cake made the way me Mam used to do. She would make 3 -one to try the oven temp, one to make sure it had enough fruit in and when she got it right the one we had for Christmas which I made the marzipan from scratch and the icing (non of this ready made stuff). Me mam would pinch some of me Dad's rum, best brandy and a little tot of whisky not to drown the taste of the brandy and rum. It was lethal.🤣🤣🤣🤣.Lorna from Northumberland.👨🏻🍳
That was a lovely watch. Interesting, informative and no lengthy preamble. I’m certainly going to use your recipe having it written out and costed is so helpful. Down to earth cookery classes 👍👍👍
I love how we inherit bake and cookware from our grandparents or another relative that we are close too. Every time you use the item, wonderful memories come floating back. And all the goodies we make are almost as wonderful as they were we ate them. Love that you are giving the timeline for traditional Christmas cooking. The old customs need to be revived and enjoyed by the up and coming generations.
Being on a limited budget, I always appreciate your Chanel. Thank you so very much. A friend of mine has just returned from Moldova and brought me back a half bottle of Legenda Moldovei VSPO brandy, so I'll be using this for the cake. Thanks again and best wishes 🙏🏻🙋🏻♂
That cake looks delicious… I think this will be my new Christmas cake recipe! 👍🏻😊 Also, I do love that you don’t buy new tins and pans for every video as some channels seem to do. They have obviously served you well and continue to do so… no need to change and no unnecessary waste! Bravo Dave… 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Loved the tin story those things really mean so much don't they? Anyone can go and buy a tin from the shop but it's extra special when there are memories attached. The cake looks delicious 🌲😊
I loved your shared story of your great-aunt’s cake tin. My mother always made fabulous fruit cakes for everyone at Christmas. I am going to sort of blend your recipe with hers. Thank you!🥰
Great idea with the Christmas recipes. We're not in the UK at the moment and missing all the Christmas goodies, very expensive to order. And baking it yourself is so much nicer and also I know what's in it. Looking forward to more great recipes.
Always enjoy the recipes. This one all the more for the cake tin. I still have my late mother's mixing bowl and tart tins she would use when I was a kid 45 years ago.
Just made my cake and it's in the oven at this moment - smells gorgeous. I'm sure it will be fantastic - thanks for all your recipes and the way you present your videos - perfect. Take care 🙂
Thanks again Dave.Your Auntie's fruit cake tradirion is wonderful. My mother used to make boiled fruit cake and sago plum pudding.Cheers from Australia.

It's great that these things get passed down the family line . I have a load of old tins and utensils that are three generations old and still going strong. Thanks.

My mum wasn't a great cake maker but when she passed away a kept her only baking tin, it's about 55 years old and I use it a lot now, it's used to have a little funnel thing that allowed baking on the hob but I use it in the oven, first class aluminum, looks almost new, from a time when things were made to last many life times.

Hi Dave, we have followed your recipe, and it’s in the oven right now, can’t wait to Christmas Eve etc. We watch all your videos and are big fans, keep up the good work . Jim & Lorraine, Ipswich😊

Like some other commenters I also recall my mother making the Christmas cake round about September/October and feeding it! I also remember that it kept well into the year and didn’t go off
I have never attempted a Christmas cake..mainly because my other half and sons are not big fans..but I think a proper homemade one might change their minds..! 😊. And I am still using my paternal grandma's electric Kenwood hand mixer..still going strong considering my Nan passed at 92 and I am edging close to 60..😂
My late mam born in 1920 in Blackhall Colliery made the Christmas cakes in September and "fed" them with cold strong tea she never weighed anything of the ingredients and mixed them in a huge bowl with her bare hands, honestly Rob they were delicious
Yes I remember my Aunt doing the same.....no scales....just a handful of this and a handful of that....always came out great. Thanks.
Made the simple fruit loaf and my husband said he preferred it to any other fruit cake/ loaf he’s ever had. And fruit loaf is his absolute favourite xxx
Self raising or plain flour ?

Can totally see where you're coming from with the tin Dave, my mam's cooking tins and trays were burnt black from being used in a coal fired range. Happy days indeed.......baking day happened often and always great when I was a kid.
Super cake, I really loved the family story behind the cake tin!

Wow I thought mine was expensive....do give the recipe a try. Thanks.
What a nice story!
Many thanks.
I can smell the Christmas from the screen 😂. Looks amazing

Absolutely fab, you are using your great aunt tin. Love it 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
Yes it's been in the family for generations. Thanks.
Fruit cakes put a smile on everyone's faces this time of year
Yes it's a classic. Thanks.
This is amazing! My grandma sometimes used earl grey tea instead of alcohol, it's cheap and fragrant and a good substitute!
Thank you for mentioning that. I'm going to try it with Earl Grey.
That's a good idea as a substitute for the brandy. Thanks.
off to the kitchen to make the cake, thanks for the easy recipe, some recipes are too daunting, yours looks easy.
Yes I try to keep it as simple as I can.....good luck with yours.

Do what I do David... I half or quarter the amounts! Give it a go, 😊yum! 😋
Or divide it up and give it to others in the same predicament as you. You can freeze the leftovers for a slice with Sunday dinner.
@@lynn6462 Cheers Lynn 👍😊
@@jjudy5869 Cheers Judy & thanks for the freezing tip!👍😊
Many thanks....and yes you could half the recipe and try it in a loaf tin, I'm sure that would work.
Love it

Mum and myself used to make a housekeepers fruit cake.
Hi I've never heard of housekeepers fruit cake. Is it much different to a ordinary fruit cake.
I've got a similar aged tin, (Albeit square, and a bit more bashed). Mum also used to wrap/tie a few layers of brown paper around the tin to protect the cake from the direct heat when making such a fruit cake, (almost identical recipe).
Thanks a lot....yes it's a good old traditional recipe.
Thanks. Love great Aunt Belle's tin. David please when you get a chance could you do a recipe for meatballs with tomato sauce and fish cakes for a friends teenager who is learning to cook with you? Thank you.
