    Yes, a reliable water supply is the highest priority. We are lucky that water comes down from the mountain all year, the only complication is the pipe needs attention in the wet season, due to land heaven, or when diggers repair the road, and cut the pipe. Jerry can would save us having to boil the water for drinking (it's probably safe to drink, but not tested). Great vlog!

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  7 місяців тому +2

      Thank you and yes the jerrycan is great and saves us a lot of boiling too 🙏💦 eventually when we get a bathroom built we'll put an online filter system in, but time and money is always an issue!

    I wouldn't have thought that you could store too much water, if you have the means to do so. First thought that occurred to me when watching you dispensing from the safe water Jerry can, was some beer making activity.

      Not sure what you mean on storing water? We've 12000l of ibc plus the soon to be 2x reservoir.... 💦

    What size pump are you using?

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  7 місяців тому +1

      Morn, we have 2 both are hondas but what's important is not so much the distance but the head height. You can use an app to show your head height then you need a pump capable of pumping a greater head height. So we measured the head height from the bottom of the pond to the top of our land which from memory was 32 m, total length was 330m and even our smaller Honda dies, a head height of 40m

    You did a great job, as usual. Congrats. You are very handy in your projects.
    But, spending thousands of euros (double if you consider work time) is gonna have a return?
    Understand you need water to live, to the house, yourselfs, etc. So, guess its absolutly necessary. But to the agro part of it...doubt it will ever pay for itself.
    Sometimes the best irrigation is no irrigation at all. Easier to plant the right plant to the site, then to adapt the site to the plants you want. If the irrigation fails for a season most plants will get in trouble. It will be a forever job keep those systems running.

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  7 місяців тому +5

      Short answer is each year the food forest will need less irrigation as the tree canopies grow the ground covers, establish etc..
      We are slowly getting ready to open a small nursery which whilst it could generate a big income we do it mainly because we love it. But have read several books on Homesteads of less than an acre making reasonable incomes from plant sales. I don't necessarily disagree with your sentiments especially on costs, but the biggest initial outlay is infrastructure and plants....
      Once established though propagating is relatively easy

      @@TheWildlandersOffGrid great to read that you are going into nursery business.
      I have run a nursery (non comercial) for about 6 years, about 500 a year, all perenials, mostly trees/srubs, mostly natives. Its great. Cant imagine doing it bigger and comercial, specially off grid. How many do you need to make it profitable, thousands? Thats a lot of soil, compost, and water, and pots, and work. Wish you luck.

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  7 місяців тому +1

      Love growing and working with plants.... Whilst we're off grid it's all old farmland around us and the soil down our terraces is very arable..... but we'll mainly focus on unusual edible perennials and also things we can actually grow in our climate.
      As with anything on The Wildlands its trials and experimenting....
      Where is your nursery?

  • @robertlee6479
    @robertlee6479 7 місяців тому

    You don't say , but am guessing you are in Portugal some where as a lot of these of grid videos are in Portugal, me as well. A 2.5 inch pump will pump all you need as far as you need. Most water here if perfectly safe to drink without and thing to put in it I have drunk water from mt watermine and well without filter and am still here. When I irrigate my pump has a filter on it to keep out the muck from blocking the pump. Rainy season starts around second week in Sep, July and August are very hot and dry and if you get any rain then you are lucky. I have a 35,000 gallon reservoir now, but had only 150 gallons in the first year. All those so called bugs you are purifying are the very things that build your immunity and keep you alive longer. Just looked at another of your videos and I see you are in Portugal. let me guess, you are in the Castelo Branco area like a lot appear too have gone to because of the low price. They are low for a reason. It is very difficult to grow things in that county because of the low rainfall and the heat. I'm in Guarda county where it's nearly as warm but a lot wetter, but we still need more. I a found that 2 crops a year is better than trying to grow one big crop as it is difficult to keep things here because of the warm winters.

      We have a cow farm opposite side of our valley so definitely worth filtering before drinking.
      Been exceptionally wet this year here and we've also swales and berms into there 2nd year so our food forest is fairing very well. So wet were actually having to keep emptying the ponds and drain our ibc.... Your right tough August is extreme heat for growing but weve started using shade in the food forest just for thus month. With each year we get a bit more of a hang of it in terms of water management.
      Just about learning and getting established that in conjunction with permaculture means really you can grow anything anywhere. Each year gets, a bit easier 🌱🌿💚
      What are you growing? Do you use permaculture principles and or no dig or?
      Thanks for the input 👌💚😊

      @@TheWildlandersOffGrid Yes we had 8ins in Jan and still raining but will be a nice weekend. I grow every fruit imaginable and all the veg that I like, but storing through winter is a big problem,. So now grow 2 crops. The first is already If the dairy farm is on the opposite side then you still have no need to worry about contamination as the water there won't enter your water system. If on the same side then I can understand your fear, but not if is across the valley sown and growing nicely and the second I will sow in Early Sep, in order to catch the first rain. Being a pro market garden in my time I do the digging, but this year am trying the no dig method to see how it goes. In 22 I ran out of water so had to ferry tap water from the house to the farm as not joined and still lost all the trees I planted that year, but not alone as many wells in the area also ran dry. I simply avoid trying to grow things in July and August as the climate means you can make up for it the rest of the year.

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  5 місяців тому

      Sorry missed your reply 😑
      Sane, as, us, we don't grow in July August but just try and keep the trees, and perennials alive through the yearly drought.
      Hows, your no dig going?

      @@TheWildlandersOffGrid At the moment is hardly a weed in sight and I can look down the rows and see all my plants coming up. Saves a lot of back breaking digging. Now only dig when I bring a new terrace into production. No worry about the drought this year as my res has lined so no losses of water after all this rain so have 3 times the water to see me through the hot summer and looking like it will be very productive this year and I drink my well water when am watering, it helps build the immune system.
