Can I ask you a question. I have some noise and I think it’s the Vanos. I about have it pulled out. It’s a e46 m3. I have a video of the sound. Would u be so kind to have a look?

You are a soldier of the E46 and now the S54 Vanos!! I've done my Vanos duty and shouldn't have to go there for many years again. Too bad I didn't have you and this video at the time. Thanks for the great work!!

Love all the comments completely dissing the whole E46 M3 platform based on an experience with a bad example. There are bad examples of each model from *all* manufacturers. Wake up people. Bad examples/lemons are *always* down to poor maintenance and neglect by current and/or previous owners. Buying one is always a gamble as it is very rare to be able to trace every bit of history and ownership. An educated guess is all we petrolheads can do. For every single person bitching about the model there are hundreds of others who stand by it and say it is the best drivers' car they have ever driven. Yes, the Rear Axle Carrier Panel, commonly and mistakenly referred to as just "subframe" is an issue that can be sorted. Vanos and diff? They are consumables, both easily replaced. Rod bearings? Once replaced they will never need looked at again unless the car has been regularly booted by some twat while the engine is still cold. My own car is a 2001 model at 134k miles on the recalled bearings. Oil analysis shows they are still well within allowable specs. RACP still good. Original vanos unit, again still good. Original diff, very slight noise from cold which I will be replacing in a few months. This car is still regularly used as a benchmark. I've never known any other car that is constantly compared with brand new models from various manufacturers. And above all this it is an 18 year old platform?! Can the haters please explain that one?? Of course there are faster and better cars out there. After 18 years there fuckin well should be..
And lastly, to the idiots saying to avoid this ///M just because there are faster and better cars need their dosy head looked at. That argument really is pathetically null and void. But, haters are gonna hate as they say.

thank you so much for doing some S54 videos! so hard to get videos for this motor, i just had to put mine away till next summer, miss fire across all cylinders, i changed all the coils, spark plugs there were 2 burnt coils. but after that still misfire across all cylinders still so im thinking the vanos solenoid is the problem. No vanos codes tho, did get a over retarded on the intake cam p0012.on top of all that i noticed taking the oil cap off the engine while it was running did absolutely nothing no change. 2002 m3 manual.

Stymie Snerdly sell it and purhase a 370z or a 2017 Camaro ss 1le.They're both cheaper to maintain and will outperform your m3.I know this because I have an 04 m3 and theres always something wrong with it.

    Hey Jason
    I don't have Instagram
I got an E90 with vanos codes
    I replaced both solenoids
    Replaced both cam sensors
Owner neglected oil changes so there was some significant sludge buildup.
Did two oil changes with cleaner in between
it has random misfires on cyl 4 5 6
And there's a thud at idle
When codes are cleared the misfires go away
    Some suggested replacing valvetronic...
In your experience what are the possible causes?
    Codes 29cc, 29d0 29d1 29d2
Codes for vanos (sorry forgot the exact label)

Beisan instruction said to " turn camshafts counter clockwise to adjustment end position." prior to checking your timing with the alignment bridge at the end of the instructions, my timing is off after I fully retard the cams, but it's good prior? so I wonder if the cams have to be fully retarded prior to checking the timing?

How did you setup and remove the vanos AT from the head? Don’t you need to put it on TDC then put pins in the cam ? And lock the crankshaft sprocket with a pin? Btw, thanks so much for VACMotorsport hub upgrade. It is the best one I’ve seen.

    • @SavageBunny1
      @SavageBunny1 5 років тому

B Souza you can take it off in any position, it is best to take it off on TDC and with the cams locked, I ruined at least 3-4 valve cover gaskets trying to get the timing right even with tools.

Hey Guys Like your channel! Hey a question for you I have a 07 X3, I had the check engine light come on a while back so took it to the shop they got a P0012 code intake cam out of time so now they have tried everything they can think of new solenoid's, new timing chain, new cam gears, and like you said they have parts that they can throw at it so cam sensor, crank sensor, oil flush and still the code comes back but it only returns on a cold start and then maybe the next day or so will go off and then come back again, so now they don't have any idea and are telling me the only option is to replace the engine it only has 122,000 on it and runs great when the light is off but stumbles on start up when its on. so I don't know any ideas besides the engine change!

Your going to spend 10k on an s54 swap, and they aren’t for a casual wrencher to do. An s52 is much more straight forward, but it will still cost a lot. Find a m50 525i complete car (preferably before 94/12 to avoid ews ii, contrary to popular belief you can use ews 1 silver label ecus) and you’ll have nearly everything. That way if you want an s52 later you’ll already have the oil pan, wiring, etc.
