  • Good luck summarizing this one, nerds! Listen in as we examine William H. Gass’ holy casket of hellfire and judgment, Omensetter’s Luck, a wild stream of preacher prose, suicide and/or murder mystery, and small-town cat gossip. Seemingly intelligent points are made by the B.O.S.S. gang regarding the book’s odd three-part structure, its allusions to original sin, and Gass’ iterative writing process, but in this episode, it’s truly just about the words. Cathartic, unhinged, godly (godless?) passages steeped in rhythmic precision and linguistic excess are the focus here, dear listener. Enjoy the wonderful release that comes with reading this gem aloud - it just might get you through our present-day IRL reenactment of The Book of Revelation.

Thanks. Just found y'all apropos of Omensetter's Luck and I'll stay. Read and enjoyed all of Gaddis but Gass - IIRC - was like running into a brick wall head first - several times. I'm now 83 and less impatient but y'all's discussion brought back all the exasperation of decades ago. Cheers an' 'at.

Yeah the book's not uneven. It's written like how it should be.

"Should"? Perhaps. It is written exactly as it is. For some, that feels uneven. For others, perfection. Either way, hell of damn piece of writing from the brilliant, Mr. Gass.

For some reason, American Postmodernists are pretty much unknown in Europe. Pynchon sticks out, but more like a meme-figure than a writer. Gaddis, Gass, Barth, Barthelme and others, are like discovering a gold pot. What struck me the most is that they are neglected even in the USA. Keep doing them.

Yeah. I just finished reading all of Gaddis and Gass. So good. I have yet to dive into any Barth. Hopefully, these gentlemen will do some more US Postmodern fiction.

Good luck with the Furber section; it can be challenging. Confusion is a necessary ingredient when reading such challenging work, so something you just need to ride it out.
Glad you enjoyed the episode so far. Thank you for listening.
