Damn... This match really changed my look on Cowboy Bob. He always awesome in the ring. My only times watching him was in WWF and he definitely looked nothing like this. Although I loved him as Pipers right hand
Bob Orton was is so underrated. He could wrestle and talk circles around the guys now. Goes without saying, Funk is one of the best of all time. These guys were masters of their artform.
I saw Bob Orton Jr .- Tito Santana (Intercontinental title) at Richfield Coliseum, OH. I was new to pro wrestling viewing, so I only knew Orton as Roddy Piper's flunky. Didn't expect much, BOY, WAS I EVER WRONG!!! Orton gave a 'rasslin' dissertation. Oh, yes, Bob Orton was very underrated.
Not Talking . Bob’s Achilles heel , the thing that held him back , was that he had no ability to talk people into the building . Among fans that really appreciated in ring artistry His name would sell a ticket but to those less taken with technique he was boring . Bob was more in line with sixties wrestling than eighties wrestling . I think its a damned shame that many think his run as Roddy Pipers backup was his highlight . The stuff he did in the NWA was far better .
On the WWE Network there's a match between Bob Orton and Tito Santana and I watched it just to appreciate it as an old school match, expecting it to be the regular 10 minutes max of mid 80s WWF mid-card matches, but it's one of the best matches I've ever seen, like 26 minutes long and just masterful storytelling on both their parts, check it out sometime, I believe it's the only Bob Orton vs Tito Santana match on the Network
Someone might have pointed this out, but I think this was a quarterfinal match in a tournament to determine a "world champion" who would be the southwest's answer to the larger promotions' champions (Ric Flair, Nick Bockwinkel, etc.). I don't know the rationale behind that, but I guess those other champions were difficult and expensive to schedule. Funk was the best wrestler and biggest name in the tournament, but it's possible he really didn't want to be champion, as he was pretty independent and liked to make his own schedule and have some family time. So he drew with Orton, got the go-ahead to advance but then was "injured" by Abdullah the Butcher, so Orton took his spot. I think Orton beat Wahoo McDaniel in the semifinal, then in the final, lost to Adrian Adonis, who was still in shape and a pretty credible champion. I'd guess McDaniel also didn't want to be champion as he was generally in the Mid-Atlantic.
funk was always a great wrestler, imagine having the best comimg to your house and would work out with your dad, lou thesz, pedro morales, billy watson and his brother dory and his dad. but terry loved the crazy character. but the man knows his wrestling. and his dad has own promotion so he ate and drank wrestling everyday since grade school and learn from the best wish i grew up in an enviroment like that.
This exposes how much wrestling is as much what you do out of the ring as in . Whats the difference between these two ? Their work is pretty much even , a draw or near draw , until you put a mic in their hands . Funk knew more than in ring performance , he knew promotion . Orton seemed not to be very comfortable with a microphone . Thats why even though Orton looks as good as Terry Funk here , he is not generally thought of as in the same tier as Funk
"Starting on December 5, 1982, Southwest Championship Wrestling became the first weekly wrestling program on the USA Cable Network, airing Sundays at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time. As a result of the new national exposure, SWCW staged a one-night tournament in Houston, Texas, to determine an "Undisputed World Champion."" - wikipedia Commentator mentions it being a part of the tournament, so I'm guessing December 82 or January 83. I was surprised it was that easy to pin down to be honest, I thought I'd have to dig a lot deeper.
a nalingus this was the one where lou thesz gave his old nwa title and plus the new belt to adonis who beat orton in the finals. it's on the dvd set with cornette and meltzer.
Pause it at 11:01, might have to click to just the right frame....by the looks of Funk's trunks....he seems to realllly enjoy wrestling...or maybe he just enjoys being beaten up by Orton....BOING
I could watch these old school matches all day
Cool, this is the old school wrestling I grew up with.
Nothing comes even close to this in the last twenty years, and puts everything out there today to shame.
You are so right now we are talking wrestling 🔥
this how a wrestling match should be....
You are so right now we are talking wrestling 🔥💪

Edge to Terry.

Never realized how much they looked like each other. Especially here, when Funk had the same hairstyle as Orton.

It's weird seeing this matchup, I always thought these two could be each other's stunt double.
Good stuff! featuring two very cagey and skilled professionals.
Awesome match! Two of my all time favorites
Southwest Championship Wrestling
Notice Orton works the back nearly the entire match . That is strategy . You don't see that anymore .
These guys would of been a bad ass team
You are so right now we are talking wrestling 🔥 tag team action 🔥 R U man enough 💪
When I would play with my LJN figures these 2 would be a tag team...
Bob Orton Jr had a great title match against Hogan in SNME. In fact, that was the first WWE match I ever saw back in the day
They sold every blow
you would all most think, terry funk, is wrestling himself..lol. look at the hair, and body type... awesome match
larry floyd I always thought they had the same look, more like brothers.
I really like the old school wrestling wish I could see more matches from k c mo

Kool watched the whole thing 💯
I remember readin PWI around1980 thinking funk looked like orton's brother...
really cool commentary ... where is this footage from?

When I started watching it Dory Funk would often wrestle Jack Brisco for the title. It was Jack Briscos toughest challenger at the time.
Then Vince bought the time slot, correct?
Old. School. Wrestling. Real.
It says "Wrestling" on the marquee and these fans got it in spades. Certainly nothing the current WWEx-Lax can produce.
Should of been a battle for cowboy hats and boots.
☆ Now - That's A Fight - Terry Funk V.S. Bob Orton Jr☆ ☆ DING - M2.H.B. 2022 ☆
Where did this come from?
Good commentary; sometimes new commentary over old footage can be stilted and hard to listen to. They know what's coming and don't hide it.
They could pass for brothers
oh jimmy suzuki
Is it the match from may 83 ?
lots of long curly locks on these 2 grapplers - must have gotten lots of attention when they were little toddler babies.
Loved the match. But it was too long. I guess they both had to get over.
Excellent match, but as a stand alone match, it went too long.
Ohh my god he really look like Randy Orton.yeah Randy's dad💪💪
THIS ... is professional wrestling ...
And still they could turn YOU into a knot in seconds for real
alBart this is real rassling.

Look !! Wrestling .
Look at Funk actually trying to get out of a headlock . You never see that anymore .
+Blacques Jacques Les Squacques Selling the backbreaker
You are so right now we are talking wrestling 🔥💪
I liked Bob Orton before he teamed up with Roddy Piper
question. did dory jr ever wrestle terry ?
Yes
Adrian Adonis won the title.
The announcer ruins the video.
Anyone have a guess on what year this is?

Chowchilla Charlie it's may 26 1983 was the date he beat orton.
