- How to make a perfect journal, with expanding pocket, front pocket, bookmark, elastic band, etc. Great for journaling, sketching, diaries, notes, studying, gift, etc. Inspired by Moleskine brand large notebooks. Finished dimensions: 8.25" by 5".
Another great thing is that it's way cheaper to make this than going out and buying one of these from the store!

May I add a tip I learned on a course? When making a book and cover, try to have the grain of the materials all running in the direction of the spine. How to tell? Hold your paper or card and push inwards, making a U shape. Try in both directions. The way that gives the narrowest U is with the grain, and that should run along the direction of the spine. You feel less resistance from the bend. Why? Because most paper has the fibres running along the grain, so if you go against the grain, they tend to resist creases and folds, and the paper wants to open again. Sometimes you handle a book and feel it's fighting to fan the pages, won't stay open where you put it. That's because it's against the grain, or a mixture! Your text block was probably against the grain, because usually the grain runs with the longest edge of the paper stock ( long grain). If it runs across it's called short grain. So if you take a piece of A4 and fold in half to make your signatures, you are probably going against the grain. Start with A3 and cut it down to what you need. The same applies to board for making the covers.Still, maybe you find it doesn't matter!
Wauw good tips?!
The fact that you work on that pretty table cloth and didn't mess it up is really impressive.
+Rory Walker Thanks, but it is actually just a plastic placemat that I bought to work on so I keep my white desk clean. :)
Oh, that explains why it's so wrinkle free.
At 65 years old I thought that a journal is for you young women but I find I need a journal to kep up with myself and keep some scriptures close to my heart. TFS.
You're welcome, Eileen! A scripture journal sounds like a great idea!
I just wanted to say that I FINALLY managed to make one. I've been trying like 4235636 different tutorials but this one is definitely simplest and it WORKS! Thank youuuuuu

This was an awesome detailed tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing. It helped me to make a planner using your concept and got so many compliments on the design. Again thanks.
+Delores Gerald That's so great! I also made a planner once. I hope you had fun!
Awesome video. Actually a great instruction video. Good work!
+Brian Goss Thank you! Have fun if you decide to make your own journal!
GREAT video, i did mine following the didatic step by step, and really liked the result. It wasn't as professional, and i lacked a few finishing touches, but overall i loved it.
Thank you! So happy for you!
Hello UA-cam! I've UPDATED the video to include a new template for making the accordion pocket in the back of your moleskine. Here is the link to the template I made:
www.pinterest.com/pin/301459768784690533/
Printing Instructions: IMPORTANT Print out the template horizontally/landscape mode so that it takes up the full 11 inches. If that doesn't work, you'll have to copy and paste the image into a program such as publisher/word and resize it to fit the length of the whole page.
Hope this makes things easier everyone!

*If you're planning to use markers in the sketch book* please don't use printer paper that's the worst paper you could get for expensive markers

Super helpful. Thank you very much! :)
Thank you!
Amazing xx
Libby Smith thanks! :)
Z Ring Thank you! I've always really enjoyed making journals. :)
Thanks for watching my video!
No, it is not necessary to trim the pages. Just make the cover bigger as you suggested.
I hope your notebook turns out well! :)
You're very welcome and thank you!
Gabriella Balagna hey, can i do this with more pages than you use? also do you have any suggestions on what the increments should be on a4 sheets?
Great questions! Yes, you can add more sheets/pages. (Just add more signatures or make each signature have more sheets of paper.) As far as increments go, just make sure you have the same amount and stay away from the top and bottom edge (as that area gets cut off when you trim your pages). If you need me to be more specific, I can do that, just let me know. I hope your book/journal turns out nice! :)
Very good tutorial...
Thanks, David!
Thx, I really would like to make sometime
My pleasure. And you totally should!
Sweet amazing job really enjoy how this worked out in the end :)
Keep drawing and make art :D

thank you!
So beauty!!! You winned a new subscriber ^-^/ Hugs and kisses.
+Ruby Rigby You're so kind! Thank you. :)
Hi, I love this tutorial!
But do you have to cut the pages? I like the size of the folded 8.5x11" pages :)
Thanks a lot xx
Love this tutorial and I can't wait to give it a go!! What size is your corner punch? I have been looking and most are 5mm but have found 1/2 and 1/4 inch as well.
That's great to hear! My corner punch does not say what size it is, it seems pretty small though. I hope your book turns out great!
What size is the corner punch you used? I'm looking for one similar, but I'm not sure which would be the right size for the paper you used. Thanks!
I'm from Peru and here there's no Recollection 'cardstock paper' we only use Canson cardstock and i want to know if it's the same or the Canson one is too thick. I'm waiting for your answer because i really want to try this amazing tutorial
Hi Alanis! As long as you can fold/crease the paper well, it should be fine. Have fun!
Excelent! What I didn't get is the dimention of the inner text block. The one you start cutting at 17:16. I can see that its the same size as the black cardboard you cut around 10:15, but what is the folded size? If you know what I mean.
Hi there! The textblock can be trimmed down to the same size as the pocket/end sheet. It needs to fit inside the cover (which is 8.5x5).
So the textblock should be 8 x 4.75 inches. In other words, you need to trim 0.25 inches off the top and bottom. And trim 0.75 inches off the side. (Dimensions stated at 17:37.) Thanks!
Obrigada pelo lindo tutorial! :)
Can you please tell me where you can get that heavy duty blade you used to cut the pages ? should I ask for it as a cutting blade ? thank you I really loved this tutorial you are very talented !
+Star buono Thank you! I used a utility knife; you can find them at Home Depot. I hope your book turns out great!
(Here's a tip, when you're using a brand new blade, it might have a bit of grease on it. Make sure to carefully wipe off the grease with a tissue, otherwise the grease might show on the paper you cut.)
it nice
Hi! Just wondering what size/where did you buy the corner punch?
This looks great! Makes me really want to get back into book binding....
Alyshia Eming Hi Alyshia! Sadly, the corner punch was a gift...so I don't know where it was bought from. I'm sure most craft stores (Michaels, Joann's, Hobby Lobby) wold carry one. I looked at it though, and the brand name is "Creative Memories". I've had it for years and used it a ton, and it still works, so it's definitely good quality. I really hope you do get "back into book binding"; it's really fun! :) Have a great day!
Such a beatiful sketchbook thanks for sharing... Anyway how can I do the borders if I don't have any corner punch?
***** without a corner punch, you could try using a homemade stencil, or just cut the corners at an angle using a utility blade, but i would recommend just leaving the corners unrounded. thank you and feel free to ask if you have any more questions!
Hi, Gabriella! Can I have a list of the materials or supplies that u used for your text bloc? :) thank you so much in advance! Nice tutorial BTW. :)
+Dovan Torres
Hi Dovan! Thanks for leaving a comment!
SUPPLIES are shown at 0:42 of this video.
*ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES are listed in the description box below the video, but I pasted them here for your convenience.
(If you do not have all of the supplies on hand, you can probably substitute them for something else as mentioned in the video.)
I hope your journal turns out great!
*ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES! (Also see the supplies at 0:42 of the video.)
24 sheets of 8.5 by 11 card stock, or a different type of paper
black paper for end sheet and pocket
decorative paper for front end sheet
scrap paper
paper for front library card style pocket
cardboard/chipboard
cereal box cardboard
paper cutter
cutting mat
library card template (make your own or print one off)
Love this video! How many holes to punch, even or odd? Also uyou did a great job...please make one for watercolor ! Peaceb, grace in vt
hi there! :) the video shows how to punch the holes at 1:26
there should be 6 holes
also, you can totally make this using watercolor paper instead of cardstock!
Are you still answering questions? I didn't understand, after you put the sheet together (at 10:14), what that black part was (paper sheet?) and what was the point of using it. Thank you!
The black paper is just to make a pocket in the back, you can skip this step though!
Hello! The sheets that were used are recycled, cardboard or normal? 🤔
By the way... It has been very well 👍
thanks this youtube
You are awesome
❤️
Portuguese cc please
Hi, great video! Your corner punch what size is? 10mm? Sorry for my bad english :P
I really liked this and actually Im bout try out.
So I don't need to spend $20 for moleskin skethcbook.
BTW where u got that nice papers?
Can it be like a copy paper?
I'm so glad! And yes, you'll save a lot making this homemade. :)
The paper I used is cardstock from the craft store "Michaels". It comes with 50 sheets and depending on how thick you want your book to be, you could use 25 - 50 sheets of paper. I bought the cream color paper from "Michaels"; it's called, Recollections® Cardstock Paper Value Pack, 8.5" X 11". If you have that store near you, you can usually get it on sale for $2.50 or use a coupon on it.
Now, I have also used copy paper before, but you'll need to use more sheets of paper to make the book thicker. The only problem with copy paper is that I can't use markers on it, but yes, it would work; it just depends on what you're writing on the pages with.
If you have any other questions, just leave a comment and I'll try to get back to you quickly. :)
i really love this project, i will try to make one and it looks easy to make; i needed to make one for my art drawings.
Question: What are the increments on the the piercing paper to punch holes? (i really couldn't see them they looked kinda blurry for me)
Sorry about that! The increments are in inches as follow: 1.5; 3; 3.5; 5; 5.5; and 7.
(The increments should be measured out on a paper that is the same height as the pages of your book or 8.5".)
(Sorry it was blurry for you. If you hit the gear shaped button on the video, it will allow you to change the video quality; make sure the video is playing in HD/1080p if you haven't already.)
Just leave another comment if you have any more questions I hope this helped! :)
Hi! First of all. I love this video so much! But my question is if you can do the same thing but with watercolor paper. Because I want to make my own little watercolor book. If you replied that would be amazing! Thank you so much! Keep up the amazing work!
+City_dove01 You definitely could do it with watercolor paper! Thanks and I hope you make a watercolor book!
+Gabriella Balagna thank you so much! I followed your video and it was really easy once you get the hang of it. Now all I have to make is the cover!
Thanks
UV SAMUEL Thank you and no problem! :)
I try to add a picture but i couldn't you can see them on my g+ photo
UV SAMUEL I checked out the pics on google plus. The journal turned out so awesome. It looks like you used a little lined paper as well. (Too bad there is no way to directly post it on youtube.) The cover fabric is nice and it matches the ribbon! Thanks for sharing. :)
It is a magazine picture I couldn't find decorative paper I had to substitute a lot of thing cuz they are not sold here.
Thanks
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 bravo..!!
Thank you so much!
can this book also be made with lined paper , and if so is it the same way, if not can you make another tutorial with lined paper ,thank you
I think it doesn't matter what kind of paper you use. the process is the same.
+meriando Wexi OK thank you very much
any paper will work just fine, but remember to keep the direction of the ruled/lined paper going in the direction you want. meaning, depending on which way you fold lined paper, the lines will run either horizontally or vertically.
+Gabriella Balagna thank yoy
If I use normal paper (which is a bit thinner), but want to have more pages than just 48, do the measurements for example for the cover change a lot?
How can I adjust it?
I just realized, it's 96 pages :D but still, the question remains.
+Kaoriii0206 Thanks for leaving a comment! You can definitely substitute whatever thickness of paper you want. You can also add more or less pages to each signature. Or instead, you could add more signatures. The front and back cover will stay the same, it's the width of the spine that will be different. Just measure the thickness of your text block (your signatures all grouped together) along the spine/edge. That measurement is the thickness of the piece you cut for the spine.
(See part 2 of the tutorial at 1:10 for an example.)
Thank you!
does it really need to stitch it.why cant i just use stapler
Stitching is used to attach the signatures to each other. So using a stapler won't really work for this particular method. :)
Hello! Amazing tutorial, already trying to make my own! But one question: which paper do you normally use? And how much lbs does it have?
Thank you for the video :)
Here is the paper I use, it's from Michaels, but any paper should work. Thank you!
www.michaels.com/recollections-cardstock-value-pack-8.5x11/M10023428.html?dwvar_M10023428_color=White#start=1
Gabriella Balagna thanks a lot! :))
Hi, i liked very much your video ! i want to buy a corner punch, it's radius 5mm or 10mm?
My corner punch doesn't say what size it is, but thanks for watching!
I love it! Were is the link for part two?
Here's part 2! Have fun! ua-cam.com/video/BDzLAe8oDqI/v-deo.html
Gabriella Balagna Thanks!
I really want to make one of these but I'm so squeamish around dead animals! Is it okay if I buy the hide from my local fur trader or do you recommend I kill and skin the mole myself?
Ernst Mayr I recommend using an alternative source for the cover. LOL
Ernst Mayr Definitely skin it yourself! Nothing like hide fresh from the source ;)
TheInsaneFellow Very true. ;)
Ernst Mayr wtf is wrong with you, just kill an animal for a fucking notebook? This world is fucked up.
María López educate yourself
What are the measurements that you used for the accordion pocket? I couldnt really see them very well.
Diana Herrera Sorry about that! Here you go:
Start by cutting out a 5.5 by 11 sheet of paper. On the bottom, score 3 three lines (half an inch apart from each other) Score three more lines on the top (half inch apart from each other). On the left, score a half inch line. On the right, score a 3/4 inch line. Then cut out the corners as shown in the video. (Also, turn up the volume, and you'll hear that I narrate the video, giving these measurements.)
Now, if you use the metric system, I can't help you there. You'll have to do the math and convert the numbers. lol ;)
Just ask me if you have any more questions. Thank you for watching!
Diana Herrera Hi again Diana, I already left you an answer to your comment and then I realized that I had actually already designed a template for the accordion pocket a long time ago. I found the file on my computer, uploaded it, and shared the link with youtube. Here is the link to the template:
www.pinterest.com/pin/301459768784690533/
Or, if you don't have a printer/would rather do it by hand, see the other comment I wrote to you.
If you do print the template, make sure it prints out in the landscape/horizontal direction, taking up the full 11 inches.
Thank you! Enjoy your day. :)
Ok I'm confused. Why didn't you just cut the paper to that size in the first place. It would save paper.
Valerie Goodcause the edges won't be sharp. You can leave it as is if you want a rustic look.
is you corner rounder small or large?
tks for teh vid btw mine is coming out very beautifully
+Camilla Rozario Camilla, I'm glad your journal is turning out well! My corner rounder doesn't say what size it is, but I would guess that it is small. Thank you!
can you add more than four pages per signature or do you just add more signatures if you want to make a book with more pages?
Melody Reyes Great question! Either way would work; so the answer is "yes". You can do as many pages as you can still fold in half (relatively easily) and punch through with your awl (the needlelike tool).Let me know if you need any other questions answered! :)
I would like to make a sketchbook that will tolerate a light watercolour wash. What sort of paper should I use? 65 # watercolour paper?
i don't use watercolors, but i would recommend trying out the paper before you make the book. thanks!
I'm making watercolour sketchbook with this diy using concord paper. The paper itself is very thick for a paper and have nice texture on it. Hope it helps
New subscriber!
Thanks for subbing, Regina!
@@GabriellaBalagna You're welcome! I hope you will come by my channel and subscribe! We can support one another!
I really want to do this but can't find the video for the cover!!!
Here you go!
ua-cam.com/video/BDzLAe8oDqI/v-deo.html
Can you do the same thing for a landscape format journal?
Yes, just adjust the dimensions.
What is the name of the paper you are using?
Here is the paper I use, it's from Michaels, but any paper should work. Thank you!
www.michaels.com/recollections-cardstock-value-pack-8.5x11/M10023428.html?dwvar_M10023428_color=White#start=1
I don't have the side punch. Can i made it without the curve?
Definitely!
where did you purchase the brown cardboard cover in the second part? thankyou
The cardboard was from an old box.
The paper used to cover the cover is from Amazon.
Let me know if that answers your question.
Thank you!
great diy!
how called that think that You used for cutting corners? :3
+Signy Hess Thank you for the comment! The tool you asked about can be called a "corner rounder" or "corner punch". I am not sure where mine is from, but a craft store would probably have one. Thank you!
