I've seen people joke about ALW closing Phanton to open this and always laughed. But the fact the production added it to the official marketing makes me question if there's truth to it
@@Morgan_2317 There has been discussions in place for Phantom. In London a couple of years ago there were discussions over the fact that Phantom was closing when all it was that it was a refurb was done of the production. I guarantee you there is no way ALW will let Phantom close (even if the marketing says its going forever).
There's a reason Phantom ran for 30 years...& there's a reason why this has already been met with distrust. West End cast, we will never forget. You deserved so much better.
“Phantom of the Opera” is one of the few ALW musicals that has any depth, and was able to compete with American musical theater. The man is a hack composer for the most part.
Why are even still talking about this? The man has just lost his son. Besides the upside of "Phantom" closing is that every regional theater in the country will be vying to get on the wait list for early access to the performance rights.
I'm very much an ALW-Anti, the only show I liked of his was 'School of Rock' due to me liking the film and this show only took my interest because of Carrie during its time in London (as well as, in my opinion, Bad Cinderella being a catchy song in the West End rendition of the album) but, in my opinion, this show is getting just too much hate. The cast, I feel, are always attacked by it and they are doing nothing but their job. They might not even like the material that much but hell, if you're a person who has never had a Broadway show under their belt and a big name like this man offered you a job, you'd take it. I applaud these actors doing the best they can with what they've got and being the saving point of this show, much like they were with the West End version. I'm also finding it funny how the moment Phantom of The Opera is mentioned in a negative light (in someone's opinion), suddenly an army spawns to attack whoever made such a comment as if it is the most disrespectful thing in mankind's length. I would unpack that but it would take way too long and this comment is already a pretty hefty length already.
The concept I understand...I think. Basically there's a town that is a cross between Hollywood and The Magic Kingdom, where image is EVERYTHING. To the extent that everyone undergoes some sort of plastic surgery to look perfect, wears perfect clothes, has perfect hair, perfect make-up etc... But one chick, Cinderella, is against being forced into living that way. So said chick is forced into being a servant to hide her from the rest of the village. Cindy rebels in very public ways and the town folks of Magic Kingdom Hollywood hate her for it. Except for the spare heir who has been harboring a crush. Basically your typical social warrior going against "the man". It's a really a decent concept, but they could have done so much more with it to add actual depth to the story. For instance, Cindy is already quite attractive (at least the people playing her are) she most likely wouldn't have to have gone to the fairy godmother/plastic surgeon, all she would need to do is do her hair, wear better clothes, and clean her face. But had they made one of the step-sisters have some sort of issue where no amount of plastic surgery could help, then they could have had real conflict between a rebel Cindy who doesn't want to conform and someone who would give anything to just look "normal". Giving the story more dimension than just the rebel and the prince. Having Cinderella have to actually look at herself and see she may actually be, in some ways, bad.
Alw the story needed work 👏🏻 not the costumes👏🏻 we want witchy, maybe crazy cinderella. Your Cinderella isnt bad she doesnt stand out. The glass ass wasnt necessary
None of those quotes are even from reviews for the Broadway production, they’re from the UK production. I wonder why they’re not featuring any for this run from US reviewers? Oh wait…
People think this show will be the new Diana. People forget that Diana has a fandom because it appeared at the very end of the pandemic when Broadway was still closed and it was bright, shiny , “free”, and proshot. Meanwhile, it lasted like 30 performances on Broadway. This show is doing way too much for no reason. ALW hurt the show so much by blaming the entire cast of the West End production for why it closed. Supposedly a production of Evita will be moving to Broadway in the fall so long as the Massachusetts production goes well. I presume that will replace this along with the long rumored revival of Joseph. There is also a rumor that Love Never Dies could play a concert run so that Andy keeps a show going because he knows this won’t last.
“Evita” and “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat” revival are much better fits for Broadway than this dumpster fire of a musical. At least, they have built in audiences, iconic songs, and decent books. If those rumors are true, it will prove ALW only put “Bad Cinderella” on Broadway to satisfy his ego after “Phantom of the Opera” was announced to be closing. Though, I suspect “Phantom” will be revived after the theater is renovated properly.
Congratulations ALW, you finally have a flop on Broadway. As if American theater goers did not already hate you enough already, for destroying musical theater with the plotless mega-musicals.
I have nothing but love for this cast and wish they had been given better material to work with. Linedy is so committed, it's just the role that's not written well.
this show looks like it is trying way too hard. i just really hope the lyricist rewrote some of the lyrics, because they are insanely bad. i was so not naive? let's go for way ott for starters? i am almost judging andrew lloyd weber more than david zippel for allowing such laziness to make it into the show!
I partly agree to be honest. I feel like it is hard to judge as she may be better live and the recordings may not do her justice for whatever behind the scenes reason like maybe a bad vocal day however, she is defiantly a talented performer from other things I've seen. In my opinion, I feel like Andrew has refused to accommodate her vocally and alter the backing from Carrie's rendition, which may not sit comfortably in her range. He hasn't treated any cast of this show right so it wouldn't surprise me if that is the case. It's sad that the promo recordings may not reflect her talent like they should.
