Class 139
On the 28th June 2008 there was an Open day at the Tyseley Locomotive Works. At that prestigious event was revealed a strange new beast - the newly built Class 139 (categorised under TOPS - Total Operations Processing System - more on that in another video). This new railcar was in fact the Parry People Movers unique PPM60. The prototype designated as a Class999 was originally designed for the Stourbridge Town branch line - touted as the shortest Branch line in Europe at a tiny .8 miles long.
Parrys use a flywheel system for motive power initially energised by a small on-board LPG powered engine, precluding the need for a large and heavy diesel variant.
The initial trials of a flywheel based railcar started back in 2006 with extensive trials on this same branch line, which proved very successful.
The production units - 139.001 and 002 were actually one metre longer than the test units but otherwise mechanically similar. There were delays with the introduction of these units as in January 2009 the 139.001 was still in it’s test phase, with 139.002 yet to be completed. In fact it wasn’t until March 2009 that both units entered service with full service being achieved by May of the same year.
These wonderfully innovative units are still in service today.

Drivers eye view on a class 139 Parry People Mover on the Stourbridge Town Branch Line.
Parry People Movers on test
The class 139 is possibly one of the most unique trains in the world
But it is soooo Ugly
Juli Epp no
that, by definition, is not possible. Something is either unique or it is not.
It's not ugly it's beautiful
@@boeing747_24it’s not beautiful, it’s cute
Literally looks like someone grabbed a mini bus n chucked some train wheels on it
It's an old concept; see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railbus or en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_railbuses
*cpughcough*pacer*cough*
Dresdon McCool I thought of that too
Lmao I was thinking that 💀💀
It looks like a Pacer but worse. This reminds me of the Galloping Goose from the Rio Grande Southern Railroad.
Hey. Maybe if you were start doing videos on American locomotives, the Galloping Goose could be your first video.
Can take a look at them class 345
I mean they can’t be less comfortable than the Pacers, can they?
Naenae Gaming - AdelanteGuy the trip is about 3 minutes. It doesn’t need to be the Orient Express.
Her: “so what do you do?”
Him: “I’m a train driver”
Her: “wow that’s amazing”
The train he drives:
I used to pass Stourbridge Junction everyday on my commute and always wondered about these interesting locos. I thought they were trams at first and I would love to take the short trip on them.
But if I could guess they could’ve used a pacer train here
Wow never knew something like this existed but thank you for showing this Class 139!
Ahh the class 139. The Fiat Multipla of the railroad.
I definitely have to go down to Stourbridge from Leeds one day to try this out once all the COVID stuff has died down.
I like the look - reminds a bit of old QR railbuses on the rural Queensland lines, and essentially it's a modern take on the same concept. I think the problem with it is that aiming it at the national rail branch line market was probably misreading the market. Traffic on branch lines is too high these days - the PPMs would be instatnly swamped. However, as a low cost tram-train in urban use, it makes a lot of sense, especially as urban transport funding outside of London is non-existent. They also didn't target the developing world. I could see these being popular for cities in central/south America and much of sub-saharanAfrica where the public rail networks exist but are badly neglected, but cities are expanding but can't get funding for full metro systems.
Just been on this today having seen the videos. It rides like a three legged goat but it's such a great little invention and meets the need for Stourbridge absolutely perfectly.
Never seen a bus on a train track before, strange world
Reminds me of that weird fiat multipla car.
It’s the cutest train, I wanna keep it
And the driver's name was ?????
ERNIE and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.
It looks a bit manky like the class 70s
And they both look like old1960s electric milk floats
amazed this is still going
What a cute little tram 😊
I feel like driving that train 😎
Wooowww! Great surprise to listen your voice again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Video!
Thank you for doing one near me
Now do the class 121
Very versatile little unit this. Much more efficient that a Class 153 or 121
This concept was suggested by Harry Ferguson in the 50s as a way of keeping uneconomic branch lines open. In addition to the scheduled stations, there would also be request stops. A great idea that failed to find support from the vested interests in the railway hierarchy. Shame that it took 70 years for someone to see the logic of his ideas.
One of the UKs small transportation systems along with the airport trains at Gatwick, Birmingham and Luton, along with the alton towers and Beaulieu monorails and the Heathrow pod and T5 transit
Thanks - no idea they existed never mind they are actually in service
This is the sort of thing that could have kept many small rural branch lines open.
That is really one of the weirdest and most interresting rail vehicles I have ever seen. Thanks for the video.
I have been on it, it's an extremely bumpy ride.
nice tram you got there :) same small gauge as all the trams..
I have never been on them in my entire life but I would love to ride on them. They look so cute.
Thank you judith hope alls well in sunny Scotland
Yes everything is good here.
The "Not In Service" light proves these are buses.
Kind of an underrated train
I had to watch that one twice!
cheers.
I kinda love these lil' fella's imo, I hope that they could be preserved at a heritage railway once they go out of service.
Looks cool
Didn’t know that Class 139 Parry People Mover had a LRD (Lead Replacement Diesel) engine. Before it was converted to a conventional diesel light rail train for the Stourbridge Town branch line. I like these trains.
COOL STORY.... BRO
Troll
Really enjoyed that thanks for the share
A modern rail bus!
How did Beeching miss this one?
Very interesting
i go past stourbridge junction about once a month to visit family, ive always looked at these and thought what the heck are they, now i have answers, what a uniqu Train for a unique branch line.
you usual only get the one running on off peak periods, but just behind stourbridge junction is the shed where theyre both kept and you can always see one, eithe ron the line or resting
This train or tram is cool
I love these train videos!
such a unique power system, I'm surprised it is not mentioned more often.
So many Roblox players, anyway that train looks like a bus.
Tobys relative?
@e223-500 series dante nah pacer's better
But you play roblox too..
@@iaspex1289 I did but then I quit in March because my laptop broke.
It looks like a minibus!
I need to ride one
Why on earth have they given it indicators?
Please talk about the 142, 158 or 195
I saw one one of Geoff Marsh's videos.
Im surprised the service style hasn’t changed, if this were the US, some politician would have long either discontinued it or have converted it to some fancy light rail line
This would be perfect for the replacement of the pacer :D
We sure could use these here in the States to run on lines where trains run but don't stop cities between major stops.
Won't happen though cause the big auto & bus manufacturers want us to use cars
Can you please increase the audio volume in this video?
So they especially designed a unit to run on a 0.8 mile track between two nowhere special stations. What a waste of time!
Kept thinking it should have a cat face on the front
Oh, hey trains trains trains I always love your videos. Excuse my memory have you done a video about the new inter cities. But apart from that epic video dude

Great stuff thanks for taking the time...I'm a first generation diesel boy all the way can I suggest a video on something like the CO-BO or the baby deltic please best wishes and take care
I have been writing a scrip for the Class 28 Co-Bo
Does the driver issue the tickets on these?
No it’s done at the ticket office at the cost of £1 return
Pacer 2.0
it looks like a fiat multipla from the front
Why won't they automate the car? By removing the driver they could squeeze in more people.
Before this, what was the line run by?
Lego ttrain ?
What’s this supposed to be a hybrid bus train thing
Super material
Trains Trains Trains
I don't like british trains, but this one is cute ^^
Hjksklfljlslkfkls
Kuna Morska I find that funny because British invented trains
Different
What’s the top speed ?
20 mph/32 kmph

The class 139: the class 68 of trams
Why do you sound so much like Captain Sparrow??
It looks like a rail iron
Doctor beaching wants to know your location...
It’s 12 years old and doesn’t look old
That’s because not much in the way of design or fashion has changed since 2008.
Matthew Corcoran
But it does look ugly
Kinda looks like a Fiat Multipla
Its a tram.
the train looks like a duck
... a rubber duck
That’s one hideous piece of rolling stock. The ridiculous front and rear ends are unnecessarily fussy and look like a poor interpretation of the Fiat Multipa
It's not going to win any design prizes...
While I'm glad these are useful and still running, that design is just UGLY! It looks like something someone would make for a very badly designed urban fantasy movie or some kind of weird Tim Burton film cause it looks like they took two busses, chopped off the front with the first 2-3 rows of seats, and smacked them on a truck chassis.
I'm sorry but I share the opinion of Pacers with the 139
Disgusting.
I dont like
Trust the British to come up with this. Really?!?
New depths of daftness.
But it works and has done for a while so its not really stupid is it.
Brian Kemp I'd want a paper bag over my head if I caught that ridiculous looking plastic contraption. It's horrid.
First
Arriva
They look quite ugly
