  • / bikemanforu Hybrid bike tires demystified. BikemanforU shows us tire widths and treads raning from 700 x 28 to 700 x 38 that will fit a standard 700c hybrid or cross wheel. Even a 700 x 40 (aka 29er) will fit the same wheel. The difference is width. For example a 700 x 28 tire is narrower than a 700 x 38. If you want to go faster, select a narrow tire with a smooth or semi-slick tread. UA-cam's how-to guru of bicycle repair adds a cautionary note: A 700c road bike tire will be too narrow for your hybrid rim. A 700 x 25 tire will have a difficult time staying seated, as well 700 x 23 and 700 x 18. For a close-up review of hybrid bike tires watch this BikemanforU playlist bit.ly/16lD2cg Thumbs up if you like what you see. Please check out the BikemanforU channel for the funniest and most educational DIY videos for for how to fix your bike. / bikemanforu Of course, shipping is always free on tires for road bikes, hybrid and cross bikes, cruisers, kids bikes, mountain bikes and any other bicycle you may have, as well as tools, bike parts and accessories at www.bikemanforu.com

    Great information, because of this video, I am swapping out the tires on my hybrid to a 700x35C tire size. I have skinnier tires on right now (700x28) and they don't do well on crushed lime bike paths...especially when wet. So I am replacing the "road slicks" with a pair of Kenda Happy Mediums that are wider and more surer footed on loose gravel and in mud-ish conditions. Thanks Bikeman:-)!

      You can even go more drastic. I went from 700x28, to 700x35, to finally 700x38. When I was still finding that to not be enough cushion given poor road conditions and wanting to go on semi-offroad/offroad/gravel road/fire road stuff, I traded out the 700c frame for a 26" Surly. Now I run 26x2.0 and I can go pretty much anywhere and I'm not any slower than I was riding 700x38.

    • @StormLaker
      @StormLaker 9 років тому

      Not so well, I ended up replacing them after one season, the rear tire was bald in no time with a pair of Bontrager tires from the LBS. I plan on replacing those with a pair of Clement USH's later on. But I might be replacing the bike with a Surly LHT, I need a couple more gears and a heavier frame/wheelset.

    Thanks for the information. I have been riding on the Kenda Rain V-Cut 700 x 38c tires (the ones you showed) for over twelve years. Great tires, but after twelve years it's time think about new ones. The only ones available right now in black-wall, which is what I want, are the 35c version. I wasn't sure they'd fit. I already have some almost new Kenda 700 x 35c of another type that I could use, but I want Rain V-Cuts. Great tires.

      it will fit perfectly, you could fit 28c to 38c without any problem, it will just adapt to the rim you put it on nice and tight.

      I weigh 100 kilos (220 pounds) and I ride at least 30kms to about 40kms every single day of the year. I had at least 2 punctures a month on my rear tire here in Mexico where there is lots of broken glass, broken concrete roads and missing paving stones.
      So last year I went from Kenda Kwick 700x32C (50-85 psi) to Specialized Infinity Sport Black-Belt puncture resistant 700x35C (75-100 psi. The more expensive Specialized had even more punctures. This year I changed to Kendra Kwest 700x38C (50-85 psi) and have had only 2 punctures and the ride is much smoother. I've been filling them all to around 75-80 psi. Thinking of changing to a 700x40 or 700x42 for the extra width and softer ride. Filling to lower psi gives me less punctures but more rim pinch flats so maybe a wider tire will help.

    • @bradbolin2139

      My recommendation would be to find a tube that says like 32-40c, you can get them at Walmart. The tube is marketed under the Bell name, the new boxes these come in now say "Hybrid Only" surrounded by a blue square. These usually have a schrader valve. My neighbor has that bike, it's a very nice bike for the $....a good commuter or recreational bike. But, any tube of this type will work, you can also order them all over the place, Amazon, Ebay, Walmart online, probably target as well.

    This video is many years old AND EVERYTHING YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT ROLLING RESISTANCE IS WRONG. Please google about why some wider tires have less rolling resistance.

    • @bradbolin2139
      @bradbolin2139 7 років тому +3

      Yes and no. here's why. usually a tire of a wider width will be run at a lower pressure, this causes them to have more rolling resistance. If you were to run a 32c and a 25c both at 100 psi (which , no one runs a 32 at 100), the 32c would indeed have less rolling resistance. Also consider though the difference in the weight of a tire and how much more energy it takes to get the tire rolling from a dead stop. I've always considered a wider tire to be a good one to run at a lower pressure and a better choice for rough street and smooth trail use, while a narrower tire is good for using the necessary higher pressure required to make the bike ride sporty and agile and aerodynamic. So....basically if you air up a wider tire at the same pressure, which defeats the purpose, it will have less rolling resistance, but will then ride no better than a narrow one.

    • @All4Grogg
      @All4Grogg 9 років тому

      Kim Liong WOO
      I just looked at the late great Sheldon Brown's website, 28" is the same diameter as 700 c. ie 622mm
      1 5/8 indicates the width of your tire and for that with an older rim to best bet is to carry the rim to your local bike shop and see what works. My guess would be yes, but having a tire come off mid corner can be very dangerous to say the least.
      btw 700c rims are the same diameter as 29er rims, width is the important distinction. 38mm is narrower than 1 5/8th so they may not seat correctly.

    That's nothing new back then in that size 700 x 35c we used to back then in the early 80s we had tires like that on road racing bikes and we converted road racing bikes into what was backed into sport called cyclocross meaning that you ride the bike you get off the bike you hop over logs branches and boulders and what have you not and you had to slosh through mud through branches through poison oak and what have you it was a great way to stay in shape during the winter months when you couldn't ride your regular racing road bike or what have you and back then the tires had knobby tread pattern on them very similar to a mountain bike but the idea what that bike was we had fun racing anywhere from depending on the course anywhere from 10 laps up to 20 laps yes this race is not for the timid because you are going to get wet and you will be bleeding a little from the cuts and the scrapes of having to go through the forest.
