You might try placing a potentiometer or rheostat or a variable voltage divider resistor in series with the old 6v fuel gauge. I would start with about a 2K ohm 5 watt. Pull the tank sending unit again, raise the position of the float for 'full tank' and adjust the potentiometer until the gauge indicates full without pegging. Then check the linearity by watching the gauge while moving the float from full to empty positions.
