I commend you on your methodical, very "German", approach to the issues that affect the MR2. Very helpful. I had a similar set of problems, but these are relatively minor. One point to mention : the headlights tend to get 'matty' with time and they need treatment or replacement. A reliable and fun car. Thank you.

i'll just have to take whichever gets sold since they seem to be super uncommon nowadays (that being said, i remember them being as expensive as a gen 2 miata which is not too bad), still a pretty informative video for me especially regarding facelifts lacking the pre-cat problem.
Generally, i find that if its a young person who owned a car then the car is pretty well maintained (if its an enthusiast) or trashed if its a random young person, as for older people: they typically forget oil changes and brakes
Yeah they've become quite rare already. I would agree to your thought on who to buy a car from. My car as I said was owned by an old lady before so it was never driven hard, but the clutch was worn so I think there can always be a downside to every deal 😅
@@PlaneTMRS well, from my experience about buying vehicles including motorcycles.... a big red-flag is either a friend or someone you know trying to sell you it (tries to sell off a shitbox) or something suspiciously cheap (often crash restoration, or just something majorly bad with the car)

Good video. It's a small thing but I would check the power-steering fluid and everything else under the front shroud for rust. The top drains can also clog but I don't know if that actually hurts anything.
Thank you, you are Right! The soft top drains can clog up very quickly but I also think that won't hurt anything, except getting a tsunami behind your head ;D but these are drainable when taking out the side vents.
Checking the fluids is always a good idea
@@PlaneTMRS My MR2's PS fluid was black when I pumped it out and from what I hear this isn't abnormal since it is normally hidden beneath a plastic cover(mine didn't have one). The PS fluid is also a special electric type but I'm not sure if it matters. This goes more into modification but older 2ZZs have defective lifter bolts and will need an upgraded oil pan for track driving/autocross due to oil starvation.
Of course, the 2ZZ has it's own flaws. I wanted to focus on non-swapped cars. Maybe if I'll do a swap one day I'll talk about everything :)
I have the same HVAC control knobs! Mine is pre facelift but swapped to facelift hvac panel (has chrome/stainless trim rings) Good & informative video✌🏻

I am looking to buy a Mrs originally with a 6 speed SMT but the manufacture month is 12/2002. The exterior features are all the same as a face lifted though. Can I determine is it facelifted from VIN or engine number, which someone cannot change it?
Sadly I can't give you an exact quote on a significant change in FIN or motorcode. BUT if it is unmistakable a 2002 model it was definitely a pre facelift once, even if the owner changed all the interior and exterior pieces to the facelift ones.

Klasse Video. Bin momentan auf der Suche nach einem "neuen" Auto und der MR2 steht bei mir sehr hoch in Kurs. Kommt aber sehr darauf an, ob ich einen passenden im Budget finde. Die Preise sind da ja nach W1 und W2 auch langsam aber sicher am Steigen. Habe da natürlich auch immer einen möglichen Motorschaden im Hinterkopf. Ist ja im Fall der Fälle nicht gerade günstig zu beheben. Wie ist der bei dir sonst so in den laufenden Kosten anzusiedeln? Würde den dann auch als Daily Driver nutzen, da wird das relevant.

Die laufenden Kosten halten sich total im Rahmen. Die Versicherung ist eine der günstigsten, und für mich ohne viele Jahre um die 450€. Spritverbrauch hält sich bei mir zwischen 7-9 Litern, jedoch ausschließlich Stadtverkehr und Vollgas ;D
Also man bekommt den locker auf niedrige 7 Liter. Also für mich als Alltagsauto super. Teile gibt's zwar weniger, sind jetzt aber auch kein Vermögen teurer als bei anderen Fahrzeugen normalerweise :)
Also ich kann es nur empfehlen, im W1 und W2 wird man sicher mehr Platz haben, dafür hat man im W3 die neuere Technik und weniger Chancen reinen Rosthaufen zu kaufen :P

@@wookieechicken5188 Ich bin mit Haftpflicht bei 180€ im Jahr, CRX und co waren alle teurer trotz Frontantrieb. Betriebskosten sind gering, nur nicht an Reifen und Service sparen :)

Leider Schwer zu finden, und die Preise schwanken doch sehr. Und die Langsamkeit schreckt mich tatsächlich etwas ab.

Danke für den Kommentar! Ja das stimmt, die Preise gehen weit auseinander, wobei ich auch sagen muss, dass viele überteuerte Wagen dabei sind, bei denen der Preis nur durch den Optischen Zustand entsteht.
Du kannst auch Mal schauen ob bereits auf 2ZZ umgebaute MR2s in deinem Budget liegen. Ich glaube mindestens einer mit eingetragenem Umbau steht zum Verkauf.

@@PlaneTMRS mit 2zz hatte ich nur mal ein Tracktool gefunden, es wäre kaum möglich gewesen das Strassentauglich zu bekommen.
Wüsste nicht, daß eine 2zz angeboten wird. Finde den 2zz auch nicht sooooo geil ehrlich gesagt.
Ich würde gerne mehr aus dem 1zz machen: Nockenwellen, Auspuff, Piggyback und Abstimmung. Sollten 160 PS und 7000 1/min drin sein.
Das würde mir reichen 👍🏼

@@PlaneTMRS ich weiss nicht so recht. Bei einem Motorschaden würde ich das evtl versuchen, aber du musst erst mal einen gescheiten 2zz bekommen, bzw. Überarbeiten.
Krümmer und auspuff brauchst du auch noch. TÜV Gebühr wird nicht ohne sein falls ein Abgas Gutachten gebraucht wird. Evtl kann RHD helfen...
Dazu kommt noch, daß das 5 Gang Getriebe von der Übersetzung nicht wirklich gut passen wird.
Was ich persönlich nicht gerade geil finde ist das mit dem Umschaklpunkt der Nocken.
Bei den Lotusen wird der oft über eine Abstimmung vorverlegt. Ansonsten hast du das Problem, wenn du die scharfe aktiviert hast, und den Motor nicht ausdrehst landest außerhalb des Vvtli Bereiches und musst dich wieder hoch hungern bis du wieder im Drehzahbereich bist. Dieses OnOff nervt total. Ist nur geil für Trackdays, wenn du eh nur auf dem scharfen Nocken fährst.
Ich glaube alle die sagen, daß ist weniger Aufwand als eine Nockenwelle, ein Auspuff und eine Abstimmung haben gar keine Ahnung. Dazu kommt, daß der 2zz bis zum aktivieren des Vvtli eigentlich genau wie der 1zz fährt.
Ich glaube ich würde dann heutzutage Eher den 1zz auf Turbo, oder Kompressor umrüsten, das hat wenigstens Drehmoment.
Mit dem 1zz hat leider kaum jemand gescheite Ahnung, und Prüfstandaprotokolle, aber mir würde ein 1zz mit ca. 160ps, und gleichmäßiger Entfaltung eher liegen, als dieses OnOff beim 2zz.
Und ich denke das kostet nicht mal die Hälfte, vom Aufwand her ganz zu schweigen.
@@ct-bq5rs Da kann ich dir zustimmen, wenn man es perfekt haben möchte (passendes Getriebe, Abgasanlage etc.) wird es auch nicht billig. Wie gesagt ich bin mir ja auch noch sehr unschlüssig.
An sich hab ich nen ganz hübschen Plan was ich Motor und aufladungstechnisch gern umsetzen würde aber wer weiß was draus wird :D ich glaube am ende kommts immer drauf an was man selber will und wofür man das Auto nutzen möchte :)
in past i had a Silvia and driven Alfa Romeo GTV-spider : surprised for his very good handling 👌(multilinks at rear suspensions)
instead this MR (same as last Celica) is a very economic car 👎 how its interior show so much ..
Mmh yes the engine is an ecobox motor but can also be tuned a little for not to much money and many swaps are available.
From my experience the handling is very superior for the price that you pay for it and if you put the money in you can build an amazing touge or track car :) 👍🏼
The MR2 Spyder also has a multilink rear supsension :D
What kind of wheels and tires?
In the video I just had the stock steel rims with cheap winter tires, but I normally run Keskin KT1 with Federal RS-PRO Tires :) I talked more about the wheel setup in another video

What would be a good-value facelift MR2 price currently in the German market?
Hm I think high km rhd ones are the cheapest currently. I think they are around 6000€ and left hand drive low/mid km ones go up to 12000€ but a realistic price would be around 7-9k€.

@@PlaneTMRS btw, I did some research on the model years since I really want that Limited Slip Differential, apparently in Europe all cars cane with the LSD as standard from the factory? This would include also the pre-facelift ones. Do you have any info on this?
That would be actually quite cool, because then I would not have to go specifically for a face-lift MR2 :D
@@BobbyFighter122 the LSD was an factory option in Europe, pre and facelift so you COULD get one on the pre facelifts too. I thought the chance of having an lsd was higher on facelift models but im not sure about that anymore 😅
Best would be to ask the owner and test drive the car. Find a slick surface or grass, put somebody behind the car and check if both tires are spinning :D
Where did you get the chrome rollbar?
It was on the car already when I bought it. But if you want I think I saw it for sale on trc-tuning.com :) not a real rollbar tho but cool for the looks imo
