    Can fuel additives harm your carburetors? What is the best budget friendly way to clean a set of carbs? Check out this latest video as I test out a handful of cleaners in the most extreme way possible.
    Using carburetor jets and rubber components I test out how they respond to a 24hr soak. The results came out pretty interesting with some controversial myths busted.

    I had a dirty main jet in my carbs. Was quoted $650 from multiple shops to clean my carbs. Used a 50/50 seafoam/gas mix. Cleared up after just a couple minutes. Filled up my tank with fuel and it clogged again. Went really heavy on the throttle while riding and it unclogged again. $7 is much better than $650.

    I used Pine Sol in a cheap Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner to clean the carbs from my 1996 Honda Magna. Did a great job but all of the brass turned into an almost rose gold color. It was concerning but I've put thousands of miles on it since then without any carb issues. Great video! Subbed.

    one that I like to use is bore cleaner. works great on crud and carbon. I don't soak any rubber components in it so I don't know how they will hold up. I imagine not to we'll so I don't due it. definitely helps loosen and break thing's up to come behind and and the finishing clean. when I deal with valves ore any heavily built up parts I mix a little seafoam with it. using steel wool to polish and clean definitely a game changer. never tried it before seeing your videos. thanks for the tip Cody. will note that if using steel wool make sure to blow or rinse out the steel wool that gets left behind.

    I have used Seafoam for yrs. I have a Silverado with the 5.3 and a Ford Taurus with the 3.0. The check engine light came on in both vehicles. The codes said one of the banks was running lean . I added Seafoam to both vehicles on fill-up and cleared both codes. No prob!

    Nice vid Bill Nye. "It's science!" really tho lol That was a good test. Using different formula brand additives and comparing against other types of cleaners was a good idea to show differences. I especially liked seeing seafoam vs b12 fuel additive. I know tests have been done in a running engine, and they both work well. However, showing how they work at room temperature with jets and rubber parts was where you made this test a very educational one. I also like seeing how products reacted outside of regular recommended uses like: pine-sol + baking soda, & the omega clean. Making your test a carburetor specific one was also a good move. Thank you for that. I definitely learned some stuff from this. Lastly: how can I donate towards more tests like this? Thanks again for the education video.

    I love SeaFoam. I run some through my cb650 every once in a while and it keeps my 4 carbs clean. I also dump a decent amount in the bike before storing it for winter and it fires right up without any trouble in the spring. I don't use it as a solvent, but it's definitely my go-to first try when a fuel system needs a good cleaning.

    • @bigpapa8152

    • @justinw1765

      Yeah, after sitting awhile, sometimes my lawnmower won't start (probably too much water in the fuel and somewhat gunked up carb), but several times now, I've put in a generous dose of Seafoam and it starts up and runs ok.
      On a side note: I have 150 Fly Scooter. I'm trying out the Shell V-Power plus premium gas, as high compression, high revving, especially single cylinder engines, apparently need a higher octane fuel to run optimally. Plus the Shell stuff has higher amount of detergents in it, like PEA, than other fuels. Not sure how compatible PEA is with carbs--it's usually used more on fuel injectors. Either way, I'm still using SeaFoam as well. So far, so good.

    Cody - love your videos. Thanks so much for all the amazing content. Q: in this video you state in the summary that the brake cleaner did not perform very well. Perhaps I'm missing something but in your carb cleaning video I believe you stated that you no longer use carb cleaner because it can leave a film behind, and that brake cleaner does a superior job. I subsequently picked up a couple of can of break cleaner to do the carbs on two 750s but before I start, could you clarify this for me please? Thanks.

    Chem Dip is supposed to be washed off with fresh water, after soaking.
    Brake cleaner doesn't work anywhere near as well as aerosol carb cleaner.
    Brake cleaner is great for removing brake fluid and anything oily or greasy, and leaving a completely dry surface, but doesn't work as well as carb cleaner for cleaning carbs.

    The best and only thing I use on corroded float-bowls is battery acid. Just saved a set of Porsche 911 3bbl Webers stored outside. It's like an Alka Seltzer; NOTE: As soon as the bubbling stops, dump it out and immediately rinse with water. Since the corrosion is zinc-oxide; for you people who paid attention during Chem 1, Sulfuric acid has 2 hydrogen atoms along with 4 oxygen atoms which easily breaks the zinc/oxygen bond; without any side effects to the zinc casting itself. This includes passages. As far as gas additives go I use 1 cap/gal of standard ATF; works great on cables too.

    B-12 is solvent based which is responsible for the cleaned parts but also what caused the rubber to deform, seafoam is not solvent based although i think it is still petroleum based but just doesn't have any of the Petroleum distillates necessary to make it a solvent, honestly though, for Di-carbonizing cylinders I get the same results from using plan distilled water as i've ever gotten from seafoam although i think seafoam gives a better smoke show when you start the vehicle which is why most people use it anyway....

Or there is floating mud in the reservoir i.e. clean the tank. Or the petcock, of course. Have to be one of these. Atleast according to my experience.

      Don C. I'm sorry that your unsatisfied with the conclusion but it is what it is. I was actually hoping there would have been a definitive result in the testing but regardless It was something I wanted to test and share...
      -Sea foam did nothing to the metal jets.. but did not hurt the rubber which many people say it does.
      -B-12 additive DID change the rubber but also did much better on the metal.
      -Chemdip performed the best used in the way it is meant to be used.
      Omegasonic did not do well used in the same way.

    I do have one question for you though. I've got an ooooooold (1992) Yamaha FZR 600 that runs great! Buut. It fouls plugs a couple/few times a year. I've gone through the carbs twice and I drilled out the EPA brass caps and re set the idle/air mixtures back to the 2.5 turns out for factory spec. It still fouls plugs anyway. They're Mikuni CV downdraft carbs. Emulsion 'tubes' perhaps, even on a 10k mile bike? Thoughts?

      +Loren Husky Hey man! Thank you for the encouragement man! I would try switching to a hotter plug and seeing how that responds. Like if you are using NGK dpr7ea9 try a dpr6ea9. Lower the number, the hotter the plug. It also sounds like someone may have put after market jet needles or jets in there? Have you referenced the stock jetting to see if yours is factory?

    • @lorenhusky2717
      @lorenhusky2717 7 років тому +1

      That is actually what I did. It calls for NGK CR9E and so I switched to CR8E which is one range hotter. It makes a difference for sure but they still eventually foul out. As for the jets, I think when I had them apart that I checked that but I actually don't remember. I might have to pop one apart and look that up to compare.

    I appreciate you sharing your experience with us on UA-cam Cody.
    I'm currently having an issue with one of the carb float valves on my '82 GL1100 sticking open and hydro-locking cylinder#2. In your experience, is this a common problem with old Goldwings? Hoping a treatment with Seafoam works to clean it up or else I'll have to take the carbs out and rebuild them - not a job I'm prepared to do this summer. I'm sure you've seen and heard of people running SF through the carbs with the engine running to help clear up all kinds of problems. What's your opinion about this?
    Do you think lertting a high percentage of Seafoam soak in the carbs overnight would help clean everything out more? Potential damage to the carbs? Would it start up the next day or would you need to drain the carbs before startup?

    Cody, I'm hoping for some advise.
    I took my bike out of storage, and it took me a while to get it started. When it did start, it wouldn't idle, but I could keep it running at about mid throttle for about 30 seconds. I noticed that the gas I had put in the tank disappeared! Yep, all in the crankcase.
    I'm guessing stuck float. I'm going to remove the carbs and clean them. Here's my question:
    After draining the crankcase (done) what is the best way to introduce oil back into my engine now that it's "dry"? I want to be sure that I'm not damaging engine components when I fire it up for the first time after my carb clean.
    I've looked, and I can't find anyone that covers this topic.
    Thank you sir. Love you vids.

    • @TheMotorcycleMD
      @TheMotorcycleMD  7 років тому

      +lmdetect Hey man! A carb clean is definitely in order. With the gas oil topic I wouldn't take that too seriously. I have dealt with that issue many times. After you have drained fill it back up with the correct oil and amount and your set. If you are worried, once you fire the bike up and get it to operation temperature, feel free to drain that oil again to thoroughly remove any left over gas.

    • @USPdocter
      @USPdocter 7 років тому

      lmdetect just dealt with the exact same thing. I left my drz400 petcock on in storage. Gas was in the crankcase. I replaced a oring where the float needle seats in. I just replaced and did an oil change. A little gas won't hurt it. P-47s add gas to dilute the oil for start up. So an oil change is good enough.

      It's more gentle than some of the other cleaners out there, so kind of doubt that it "destroyed" it. May have exacerbated some other issue or issues that were already there. Sometimes internal carbon cleaning can cause issues from the gunk going into areas that it clogs, etc.

    The reason I'm asking is because I like to use it on motorcycle chains after washing to make sure to get all the water off, for obvious reasons.

      @justinw1765 5 років тому

      Using a combo of slightly watered down, hot Pinesol and an ultra sonic cleaner, with minimal breakdown of the carb for a couple hours, is often enough to clean it well enough that it works. Just make sure that after you rinse everything with clean water and let it fully dry before putting it back on. It doesn't bother the rubber that I'm aware of.
      Sort of the easier, minimalist way to clean a carb. It won't always work if things are really gunked up, especially inside the jets.
      But for those of us without a lot of practice and/or knowledge, who sometimes might put a jet etc back in wrong or the like, it is often enough of a clean to get it going.
      Then fuel additives can help to prevent further gunk, as well as not letting it sit too long. If you can, try to ride in winter every couple weeks or so as well.

      40 year MC mechanic? Well, 25 years ago I was dealing with varnish build up In carbs. There was no ethonal in gas back then. So, where did the ethonal come from? I run Shell V-Power in my bike today as it's ethonal free. So, how can you get ethonal build up when there is no ethonal to begin with???

      @@bigpapa8152 are U sure? In my area Shell have about 8% ehtanol in their fuels, but it is not explicitly labeled i.e. on the label it is E10 (which stands for 'under 10%). But this started now, about month ago, when gov requirements for that labeling got in power. So I do believe they have ethanol everywhere, but maybe in your place it is not required to be written on the label? GL ~~~
