When turning the computer on, hold the power button until the setting menu comes up. Open Settings. Menu Bar > Utilities > Terminal > "resetpassword"

does it work with a mac who was used by a user who had another apple id? or should it be the ssme apple id that was usedon the mac ?
When I get to the reset password pop up, it says “select volume to recover” yet there is nothing under it. There is no account to select. How do I reset if it isnt pulling it up for me?

Daniel, thank you for the video, I am trying to help my father in law with his MacBook, he picked up a virus and could not get into the system. Geek squad was able to wipe and reset the system. I am having an issue with trying to get into programs such as email and Facebook. I have internet (Tried google and able to navigate so I am on line) as for getting onto his email or FB accounts I am getting the (Passwords are locked), his prior passwords are not working... Suggestions?

You need to type it after clicking the utilities option you then type resetpassword without spacing

my problem too
The issue ended up being a bug where no password being set would break and prompt you for a password that doesn't exist. If your computer has an Apple ID setup, look up the instructions on how to reset the password through the recovery environment.@@lucasf6873
fixed it, boot it into recovery mode and go from there

Ughh! None of these worked. There is no question mark on mine. After 3 failed attempts, I was locked out of trying for 1 minute. After another attempt, I was locked out for 5 minutes. After another attempt, I was locked out for 15 minutes. I have no option to restart. Only an option to cancel. I guess I'm a 1%er,

Same. No question mark. Just 'user' 'Enter Password' and the 3 options to Sleep, Restart or Shut Down along the bottom. Dosen't help you I know, but bro., if you find an answer.... I'll post here if I find anything useful as well

Hi thanks for the feedback but it seems that it doesn’t work for me. I have a Mac Book Pro and as I am locked out and forgot my password and trying it do as to what your version to unlock, it doesn’t show on my screen to put the Apple ID and password reset . So it would be great if I can view another video where it will work best for me. I even tried putting my ‘Hint Pwd’ and it still tells me it’s incorrect after it says it’s the right one. This is really frustrating..

My login screen shows enter password and the question mark. But when I click on question mark it only shows me my hint. No other wording to reset password. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

That does not happen on mine and I got it this year. I tried the hold down power key option to see if I can reset. That just asked for a key it never sent to me. So I will keep trying
I had the same issue but figured it out. Shut it down, then hold command-R and the power button all at once. Hit options, then go up to the utilities tab on top left(or whichever tab you find “terminal” in. Open up the terminal and ONLY type in passwordreset no spaces all lower case. Hit return and a window will come up. Hit deactivate Mac, it will go to a new window and you can simply reset using the options it provides, restart the computer and you’re good to go.
