3 blades is all about noise reduction. Ideally the turbine would have 2 larger diameter blades but it is VITAL that the blade tip does not exceed the speed of sound Mach 1 as this is very noisy and results in blade damage. 3 blades is the best compromise. It also allows shorter masts which reduces construction cost.
