When you go to a Mall in KL or anywhere in Malaysia, it is a food adventure. It is not just escaping the heat outdoor but for the great food within the Mall. You can have a variety of restaurant meals at many of the shops there or you can buy ready cooked, package meals at the counters to take with you. The variety and choices are huge and their prices are much lower than in Australia. I was in Melbourne many years ago and found the supermarkets and shopping there very boring in comparison to those in Malaysia, especially in terms of ready-cooked meals.
RU sure about the local prices? I'm pretty sure imported produces are not 1/3 cheaper in Malaysia. I just checked online. AOEN says imported Australian lamb chump chops are about RM44/kg or AUD14/kg. Currently Coles has Lamb forequarter chops for AUD14/kg. But you don't earn the same salary in Malaysia compared to OZ. Nett minimum pay in OZ is about AUD756/week (after taxes), eg for unskilled labourers like shelf stockers. Minimum pay in M'sia is RM 1,500 monthly, RM375 weekly, eg for labourers. What I'm saying is you cannot compare. Edit: Imported fresh Salmon in Malaysia is about RM129/kg. Fresh Tasmanian Salmon in Coles is currently AUD46/kg. Unsalted butter in AOEN is about RM28/500gm. In Coles its about AUD6.40. You do the maths and then compare the average salary/wage.
@@RUHappyATM - If you live in Malaysia, you don't buy imported food stuff, you buy local stuff. Of course, imported stuff are going to be expensive because you have to pay for the transport, storage and whatever additional cost to get it to Malaysia. You do what the locals do, eat what the locals eat, buy what the locals buy, go to places the locals buy from----not specialty shops that cater to foreigners, those are expensive---like you say, Australian beef, lamb, or salmon, cheese, milk, etc (these are stuff locals don't eat, generally speaking.) Rent, clothing, transportation, etc. are all much cheaper than in Australia or New Zealand.
@@jameskoh2945 I do know that. However, even when talking about local prices, I think Australian wages are higher, compared to local pays. Just look at the GDP per capita PPP between the 2 countries. Australia's is nearly 2x that of Malaysia.
I'm Australian and moved to Thailand, unfortunately many Australians have not lived outside the country and don't realize how badly they are being ripped off with prices, quality, range and display/service. Even the shoppers and staff look like its a chore and they don't want to be there.
This is pretty much like Lotus or Giant in other places in Malaysia. Not as upscale as Jaya Grocer or Cold Storage in KL but they’ll do for basic shopping (and cheaper too).
I have been to a few supermarkets in Sarawak. Not much parking. Shopping habits for Australian families are different to Malaysian habits. Most Australian families grocery-shop weekly.
I am from KL and happened to be visiting Brisbane and Gold Coast at this time. I come to Australia regularly and make it a point to visit Coles mostly but occasionally Woolies. I like to buy Australian chocolates, snacks and other food to take back. Not because it is cheap but more for the novelty of bringing something back to family and friends from overseas. Most things are pricier in Australia but you do get some brands and varieties that you can't find back home. Just need to make sure my luggage is not over-weight!
Awesome video my friend , always enjoy your wonderful videos , thank you for sharing and thumps up , have an amazing day ❤😊 Awesome video my friend , always enjoy your wonderful videos , thank you for sharing and thumps up , have an amazing day ❤😊 77
..lol.. brings back memories.. I lived in Hobart in the early till late 90s.. we had Coles and Purity.. at that time they were way ahead of what we had in Malaysia especially compared to the suburban areas.. oh how I miss Sandy Bay.. gone are those carefree days.. gone but never forgotten! Well like they say all good things must come to and end.. lol.. thank you for this video mate.. have a nice day.. cheers!
The immediate thing I notice is that the products are displayed in the original boxes they come in with the top part removed. In Malaysia, the items are removed and displayed neatly on the shelves and arranged neatly on a daily basis so the presentation and aesthetics is prettier although more labour intensive. I also see a lot of empty spaces or empty boxes on the shelves so again, it looks messy and not as pleasing. Of course, even in Malaysia, not all supermarkets are like the more well known or upscale ones because we have so many chains here.
Well there are a few ranges of supermarkets in KL, from the lower priced more like wholesale style like the one in this video, to the upmarket one which caters to the mid/top income and expats, more imported choices of cheese and other food as well. Places like Lotus and Giant are like what you have shown, Cold Storage, Jaya Grocer and the likes are more expensive and higher ranged supermarkets
Actually it very good, plenty of space to walk around, for variety of products i think i depend from the local consumer, same with Malaysia only in Malaysia we have mix ethnicity & food culture so supermarket try to provide & make a profit from all of us 😅
I think every supermarket should have their own cafeteria, most Malaysian have this because if stock that are unsold and almost at their expiry date they use them and cooked a ready meal this way you don't waste any stock and can keep pilling new stock, customer get affordable ready cooked meal the store doesn't lose money from old stocks everybody win
What a pity... I do hope it'd get better in future. I can imagine how hard it is to live with this when you have been exposed to better supermarket in other countries... Hope Australian leaders do get to the field and see for themselves how the real people have to endure their difficult days with such conditions.
Bl masuk tmpt baru, kita rs excited & rs tmpt yg kita biasa shopping tu mcm serba kurang. Dia ni pn rs yg sama masa mai sini ritu 😂 Yg biasa travel luar negara pn misti rs yg sama kn? 😜
Now i can see it. From my observation, in Malaysia for high end supermarket, how they display their food item is more presentable and more neat as compared to Aus. Even food choices is more n cheap i guess 😅
Cheap if you earn local salary but not indulge in imported produces. I would say for the income Australians get, even for unskilled workers, food is comparatively cheap as well. As long as they don't eat out often. Minimum wages in OZ is about AUD19.90/hour, after taxes. This would be for unskilled workers. Minimum salary in Malaysia is RM1500/month or RM375/week or RM10/hour. I assume this is for unskilled workers and no taxation.
Regrettably, Australians are bled white by the oligopoly of a couple of players. Super expensive groceries, limited range. Your government doesn't serve its people.

Australian chocs are better than here in Malaysia even though they're the same brand (cadbury).

That's an Aldi thing. For efficiency and keeps costs down all round.

The supermarket doesn't look all that bad. I bet many Malaysians will be happy to shop there. :-)
I didnt say they were bad just you dont get that many choices compared to KL

The layout More or less same as our hypermarket in Malaysia (read: Lotus, Giant, AeonBig)

It's actually quite sad. Australia needs supermarket competitors.
Super expensive in Australia
AUD66 for all those is cheap. if you are comparing the price to malaysian ringgit at ratio 1:1, RM66 cant get you those items there now... XD

Crappy Coles, crappy woolies, hopefully Aldi opens up more stores
