Yes when printing coir dust dirt and to long hairs from the coir could damage the printhead. Don't print coir on any inkjet printer.
If you do check if there are no longer coir pieces, vacuum the mat several times to remove dust and other loose fibres.
for 1 or 2 mats this is doable, for a production expect lots of dust and loose fibres = big mess.

Was going to ask about the durability of these prints, but I see Robert Kirkpatrick touched on this with a different point.
Are you putting down some sort of non-pigment coat to protect the print? From foot traffic and exposure to the elements...

Looks nice but printing coir has many practical problems/issues.
Coir these days looses fiber so there can be loose fibers on the mat even when moving, bending placing it on the machine fibres can come loose.
sometimes they are not cut well causing fibres to be a few mm higher and this can tough printhead (not good)
Coir is not clean there is still much dust left in the fibre and moving them will cause the dust to come up (not good for the printhead)
The uv ink will go down 2- sometimes 3mm but the UV light can cure this ink, only the visible ink on the surface is cured. Non cured ink has a bad smell to it.
As the ink sticks to the outside walking over it will cause abrasion wearing of the ink. don't expect a long lifetime out of this print.

Really interesting points. Would you mind sharing from your experience, what is the best way to print onto coir mats? I am currently hand-painting with Acrylic and struggling to keep up with order numbers.

    • @bobmats4336
      @bobmats4336 3 роки тому +1

@@michaelapound9154 Typically in India coir mats are printed using a mold / screen printed to get enough dye in the material. That dye needs time to bond or put in an over to cure.
If only one or 2 colors, make a mold and spray paint arcylic onto the coir.

I have been in the mat industry for 31 years and done lots of printing. Also uv printing on coir, carpet, needlepunch and other flooring materials.
uv print on floorvinyl latst 1 year but since there is no protection it will wear off.
coir like carpet is a 3d material meaning ink will go down 2-3 mm. In order for uv ink to cure the light needs to cure it but the uv light can't do 2-3 mm down into a coir or carpet pile.
This means those dyes are not cured or badly cured. This creates a typical smell.
UV ink is not permanent like printing polyester where the dye transfers into the fibre. UV ink bonds to the outside of the material.
As there is no protection abrasion is an issue and it will wear off easily.
Another big issue with coir is that coir is dirty, loose fibres and dust inside the coir. This is typical for coir mats and quality has become worse the last 10-15 years.
Also sometimes they are not tufted evenly, causing some fibres to be a few mm longer. This can hurt your printhead.
This means inspecting every mat you print = lots of works.
Vacuum every mat several times to get out loose fibres and dust.
Stay away from uv printing coir. To much time to do it right, inspect and quality / life expectancy it not that great.
