I fully agree with you. I hated this song so much. At the time, it was played everywhere on radio and TV, especially MTV. This is the second time he does it. Have you missed the first from Swedish hitz goes metal? I just had to listen to that as well today just to compare. This arrangement is so much better. But I hate the original song and now I get it in my head again. Damn Tommy.

I did hear that the original singer (can't remember her name) didn't particularily like the story of the song either... which is why she sings in third person as she refused to identify with the main character.
Sounds like I found the one person who dislikes the original song even more than I do, ha! I don't have a negative history/association, fortunately, but man, did the original song go on my nerves back then (and still does)! Can't stand the lyrics, the melody, the instrumental choices, and how it's performed. And as said, it was damn everywhere back then! The radio, in stores, supermarkets, on MTV, on VIVA, in TV shows...and if you were unlucky, you had friends who liked it.
Tommy's version is actually fun to listen to, which can definitely be credited to his choice of voice performance (I consider Ace of Bace as solid musicians but I had no use for their hollow, dull voice performance choices, it was grating to me). As for the instruments and melody, Tommy's version is awesome, especially the large segments that barely sound like the original anymore at all. Which is probably why I really enjoy his take, except for the passages that are still rather close to the original 😄

Some of their songs i could like, but this song… just cant stans it. Tommy did a great job with this cover, it was so much better. But those lyrics…I wish he could do this as a Majesticaton (like Disneyton) 😉lol
Oldskule...maybe consider that the song isnt about a woman and welfare. Its about a free soul woman who just wakes up, goes to the beach to escape life and wants a new boyfriend for the day because the chase is half the fun. But she never stays.

That's pretty much the plot of 90% of all German Volksmusik songs (not to be confused with "folk" or even "Schlager". Folk is cool, Schlager is stupid but good party music, but Volksmusik is boomer music. The literal boomers.) sung by men: "Oh, I'm such a wandering, free soul, and there's this wonderful girl, oh, such fiery love, such passion, such night, but alas, now I gotta move on with my journey, bye!" and that is NOT flattering at all for this song 🤣
I appreciate your reply! Not sure what was happening in Germany but in the US around the 80s and 90s there were plenty, and I mean plenty of songs of male singers singing about their conquests or hopes of conquests.
I think most of us can relate to wanting an escape from the normal routines of life, especially as we get older. We just don't know why she doesn't stay but I feel pretty confident this song isn't about a woman wanting another child for welfare.
It's fun that we get to speculate for ourselves.
I do however, hugely appreciate that we have artists like Tommy J and Erik Gronwell that want to put out songs from this wonderful time period that was special for music.

I'd say Ace of Base has a lot of good songs, but also a ridiculous amount of picky listeners, ready to shit on anything they don't like with all their passion. Not pointing any fingers tho'.
