There's still the secure messaging system on the website or the app. If you access the website, make sure that it's actually the bank's website and not a dummy. The fraudsters imitate the bank websites, too. I never click on the sponsored link on google anymore. Those are most likely to be the dummy site, in my experience.

I experienced this a few years ago. I was in the city centre shopping so ended the call and went to my bank. I won't ever hand over personal/PIN numbers to anyone online and would prefer to end a call and visit the bank in person. The trouble is that they are closing branches which limits face-to-face verification.

Elderly mum has been getting scam phone calls for years and she handles them like this:
    - Stay SILENT
    - WAIT for caller to speak
    - DO NOT volunteer ANY information
    - Tell them to send a LETTER as if the call is genuine then they should have the address in their records. DO NOT GIVE/‘CONFIRM’ ADDRESS DETAILS

This is exactly the same boat I'm in with my grandmother.
I have managed to get through to her fortunately, and instilled the following directives.
      1. The bank will never call you and demand your account details over the phone as proof, if you are ever in doubt that your account may be compromised, phone the number on the back of your bank card.
      2. If someone calls from Sky, BT, Barclays etc. offering a great deal, just hang up. If there is a great deal out there, you can guarantee that it has been advertised everywhere except from cold calls.
      3. If you have a vulnerable family member who may be at risk of being scammed, please tell them to hang up no matter how legitimate they feel it may be.
I have managed to get my gran to call me for any potential scam calls that she has received, and I've reverse searched the number every time. It is scary when I tell you that %85 of those calls were not legitimate, but fortunately I have managed to show her how to remain vigilant of scammers.
First rule of scam checks.... If it sounds too good to be true, or feels slightly suspicious, just hang up.

@@joelhall5124 I'm guessing that she recieves a majority of these calls on a landline (apologies if this is wrong, just want to offer advice).
I got a landline for my grandmother that has the ability to block scam calls, however it takes some patience to educate the recieving person how to defend against scammers.
I visit my grandmother frequently and check the received calls that she has, then proceed to block the malicious ones. It really makes my blood boil to see the amount of scammers who would happily take money from an elderly widow.
Education is key in these circumstances, every call should be treated as suspicious (yes, that's sad, but unfortunately that is the current climate of today's scam recipients).
I hope you can find a way to keep the scammers at bay, please feel free to ask me for any tips, as I've managed to keep my grandmother (who also has dementia), free from the onslaught of scammers.

The truth is that Banks don't really protect their customers. The advice they provide is to protect themselves in the event that a customers account gets compromised so that they do not have to compensate the customer.
If they ask the question, as customer and skilled Barrister, you just point to the regulations in their terms and conditions and explain that you cannot do that. Then bring it to the attention of their fraud and financial crime department. All Banks will have them.

It all started when her pension history data was stolen from Capita last year I think - she had a letter from Capita confirming hers was one of thousands in the UK stolen and there would be no redress- shocking how these people can affect someone’s health & wellbeing with no culpability

I bought a BT landline that was programmed (out of the box) to filter scam and harassing calls. You can put in your own contacts’ numbers and they’ll get through straight away. Unknown numbers have to give identity (by voice) and then it rings and plays whatever they’ve said and you can accept or decline the call.
It’s saved me countless stressful encounters in the years since I got it. Now just need to set up a similar thing in my iPhone!

@@clarewillison9379 My mother bought one of those call-filtering phones. (To clarify - you buy the phone and plug it into your landline.) We put a list of phone numbers (family and GP surgery mostly) into its contact list, and only those numbers can get straight through. I suspect it would be possible to spoof one of those numbers, but the scammer would have to know which ones are on the list.
One catch is that automated calls won't be able to get through, which means you can't use the phone to receive access codes (e.g. for internet banking or purchases) unless you know how to disable to filtering temporarily. Also there's a risk that genuine calls (e.g. from a hospital or bank) won't get through if either the caller or the recipient fails to navigate the identification process correctly.
Also, I don't know whether these phones will work with VoIP telephony, which is being rolled out across the country. Hopefully they will.

It is not being paranoid to use only the services you are secure with. My sister can't understand a thing about most any technology, even a simple flip phone that can only be used to call or to get a call and she gets extreme anxiety trying to use extremely simple things. I say, she is fine. If she can't get to a store or the stores around her do not have what she needs, she contacts us or the relatives who live near her. It works out well. I give out no information over the phone and since we also have a land line, we get many scam calls. I just hang up, but it is a pain.

If that happens, tell the person who called you that you want to call them back on their official line. Hang up and call their customer service line and explain why you’re calling. In most cases, they may know about these types of fraudulent calls and may have questions. He only found out when he received a call from 'his bank' saying someone had tried to withdraw money from their account at a local branch. In order to confirm HIS ID they asked the usual 'security' questions. After that they assured his cards had been cancelled and made arrangements for him to attend the branch that lunchtime to get new cards ordered. Well, as it turned out it was the THEIF who called not the bank, and now armed with all his security details they cleaned his accounts out before lunchtime!

I have given up telling the bank to use their secure message service and being told "We don't have access" or similar bovine manure.
Hence setting up a password the bank MUST use when calling me.
    Its not rocket science

I feel your pain! There are organisations that I now refuse to deal with because they just don't get this stuff and therefore cannot be trusted.
Also, small charities run solely by volunteers can suffer terribly because of some of these ill-conceived security regimes because they lack the infrastructure and facilities now expected of small businesses by banks and don't want to waste the giving public's money on such things.

This is also common behaviour by Debt Collection Companies, who 'buy' old debts. Often start with asking for details, and then ask you to pay by card before you even know what they are talking about.

This happened to me the other day from Nationwide. They immediately asked for my security info. Turns out it WAS actually nationwide. Couldn’t believe it.

Please rant on! I have had exactly the same from a broadband supplier, call out of the blue requesting specific letters from my password. Obviously I didn't comply but I did joke with a friend who works at a mobile phone and broadband call centre that it was a very poor attempt at a scam. Unbelievably he said that was perfectly normal and is standard practice for the legit company. With all the possible secure ways of communication with customers if bodies continue to rely on this stupid method, surely they are complicit when customers are defrauded by scammers?

Having a 'gut feeling' that it is the bank calling is exactly why scammers are so successful. You are entirely correct for not validating your personal information, but others are not so careful.

I love it when “injury claims” scammers call to say they heard I have been in a car accident. I asked them how they came by this knowledge? They said “the police report.” I then went on to tell them very politely that I don’t drive a car, because I don’t own a car. They hung up. Never called again. Very rude 🤣

    Frauds are amazing.
Always wait 10 days for any checks to properly clear too.

Thankyou Daniel, just sent this video to my son, he has learning difficulties, works full time, and got scammed by someone pretending to be female and from the peace corps... i cringed too when i found out as there were too many red flags... the bank and pilice were swift to act but he still lost over 10k.
So thanks for doing numerous videos talking about this as it helps to reinforce what dad is telling him.

I raised this issue YEARS ago with my bank, they would call and ask multiple security questions putting MY security at risk. This still happens!

I've had this several times and in the end I have to hang up the call, get my bank card and call them myself from their number, whereby I'm then stuck in a phone queue for ages, so it is absolutely stupid. They called me, so they know it's my number, then ask me for details when they are a complete stranger on the phone. It is absolutely ridiculous. When are they going to realise how stupid they are being?

I'm with you! When someone calls me to confirm something or ask for a charitable donation, etc., I tell them that I do not do financial transactions or have discussions over the phone. I tell them to send me surface mail and I'll respond!

Just before Easter I wrote out a cheque for a large sum of money and deposited in my sons building society. Just after Easter I receive a phone call on the land line from the bank about the cheque - was it me who wrote it and if I did not respond by 2pm the cheque would remain unpaid. The man on the phone even had the cheque number. I refused to confirm my details and instead phoned the number on my debit card on my mobile. I even jumped in my car and went to the bank to make sure. The cheque had been cleared and was in my sons account. So, why the phone call? If it was a scam, how did the scammer get the cheque number?

Absolutely the best policy, it has to be remembered that the banks only protect themselves against having to reimburse customers after they've been defrauded. They have no interest in protecting customers against fraud otherwise.

Our phone screens callers. Most come up as Unavailable or Suspected Spam. But my husband on days he is feeling ornery will pick it up answering "Detective Wilson, FBI". Yep, they hang up. My favorite is to answer in a foreign language.

What a drama it all is . One cannot trust others to be who they say they are. I am 84 , drilled by my children re these spam calls. Sometimes 2 or 3 a week
I play dumb if I answer the call , but mostly , just check the number and Not answer. Then I block the numbers.

I find this a bit of a relief as I sometimes think I was just being awkward. I always laugh and say you rang me, you tell me who you think I am, you tell me my dob, and the kicker... tell me what the call is about and then "sorry data protection we can't tell you until you confirm who you are", so I end the calls with, "well in that case this call is over" - then hang up.

Good on ya! Stand your ground with those cretins! I see two things in my experience with all types of so called "Customer Service Providers".
    1. The staff and even management (don't look for leaders!) have NO idea about basic security principles and if challenged to THINK about it, will bluescreen in front of your very eyes. They don't even get how their own procedure is a complete contradiction to their own advice on this matter.
    2. They also do not want any front-facing / public contact, no inbound numbers, no "hassle" ..... or as it was traditionally known ... "work".
Be sure to use the website / app / phone / branch to make serious security complaints about their practices and ask for a follow up in the change in procedure they will be implementing. Frankly I'd also threaten to move my business elsewhere if they cannot close this hole.
