In this video (part three of the series on how to use your AirPods Pro as hearing aids) I cover how to fix a loss of sound (or “dipping”) when using custom transparency mode. This tip may also help for those that are experiencing static or feedback during normal use.
Like others, I was ready to send my AirPods Pro in for replacement when I discovered a quick and easy remedy.

Spent ton of time looking for a solution for muffled mic sound on audio calls. This actually worked! Most of the people in the internet threads think it's software problem, but seems like it's all about dusty mics. Little mics at the bottom didn't change anything, but when I finished with the black ones on sides - airpods just started to work as new with no problems.

it is an undeniable software problem. Because the mic isn't muffled all around. it is not consistent so it's not something caused by physical gunk affecting the clearness of the call.
not to mention: shit call quality outside on this "profesionnal" version is also present on NEW, out of the box airpods
Has to be a software issue. Literally just bought mine 4 hours ago brand new (so no dirt) and now I’m scouting the internet for a fix/solution.

I had these airpods sitting around for 3 years collecting dust coz the volume was incredibly low. I was going to throw them away... But your video was heaven sent... I would have never thought to suck out the vents. They are almost as new. Thank you.
My right airpod has been horrible lately with lots of static and distortion.
I followed the tutorials advice and wiped out the mic at the tip and it works flawlessly!!!!!!

My first pair of Pros from November 2019 had miserable static in the left bud after 2 months that I couldn't fix no matter what, so I got an AppleCare+ replacement pair in February 2020 and after 2 months developed even worse static in the left bud than the previous pair (and once again, I wasn't able to fix it). As of October 2020 I'm now on my 3rd pair (2nd replacement), and so far so good.

This helped because it’s true that some particles can get inside the bottom of the case. Some good old q-tips worked to clean down those holes.

You’re a true hero! I always knew the crackling was a issue with the microphones but I always thought this was just an Air Vent or something, thanks man! Fixed the crackling on my AirPods. Will probably still replace them once stores open again.

I’ve been having problems with mine for a while now, and this worked pretty well. I’m probably gonna get some rubbing alcohol to take some time to really clean then, but a small brush did wonders for these. My transparency mode and noise canceling immediately was better. Thank you, I never would have found that tiny hole where the mic is!

Just now im totally annoyed by the hissing sound everytime the bus i ride bumps or vibrates a lot. I just did a hard blow on the mic hole and it immediately fixed the issue! Those apple community forum were useless. Thanks man.

Apple is recalling AirPods Pro made before October too, so if there is a problem, get them swapped 👍🏻
Hi, how do we check when our Airpods pro were manufactured?
So it’s only a recall if you have buzzing that is reproducible. I have intermittent loss of signal, but I couldn’t reproduce the buzzing and mine didn’t qualify for the recall. Try Apple Support App and chat to see if yours are eligible.
I had both of mine replaced last week. Free one year of battery

I had a lot of problems in them and submitted them for replacement. Its a good opportunity to get them checked and replaced

Yes I learned to clean the charging area on the headphones and use a cotton swap to clean the charging connectors in the case too

Thanks man, I managed to fix mine but just after I called in support to receive a replacement for my AirPods Pro. At least I can still use it while my replacement comes in lol.

Finally a video out of many I've seen that addresses an issue I'm having. I had no idea about the small tiny microphone at the bottom but it definitely had something to do with what's going on. My issue with mine are that the noise control wasn't functioning correctly. I could turn on any of the three options but wouldn't be able to discern any difference from transparency to noise canceling. I cleaned out the small tiny mic then my right side started working again but left side after cleaning is still will not working correctly. Not sure if I missed something or what. Thank you for making a video about this that others didn't mention.

These Echo Buds were basically an impulse buy on Prime Day. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxK5mc3yw4xA7Mf2j6k6n1Uqv_KUgrKdeM I've lately gotten into pod casts and needed a convenient way to listen. These fit the bill. I am no techie but had no problem with set up. It did take a couple tries to realize Echo Buds will only connect to one device at a time - at least it seems that way for me. The tap controls are 'very' sensitive and the sound is clear. I've been using these off and on much of the day for a couple hours at a time with no discomfort. I'm quit pleased with this purchase and will prob bite the bullet and join Audible to help get through all those books waiting to be read.

Thank you so much for this video. I was hearing a static noise on my AirPods Pro 2 on transparency mode and it was annoying. Therefore, I had to change mine four times. Did everything I could to get rid of it until I found this video. Thank you so much once again. Also, I never knew there was a mic there.

Thank you so much! I hadn’t notice that opening on AirPods. I used compressed air and it did the trick. My right AirPod was giving me feedback when in transparency mode and now it is gone!

YMMV … Just cleaned mine and the feedback I had in one of them become far worse.
But at least now they’re clean, even if the transparency and noise reduction features aren’t usable.

I looked at all mics & cleaned them. I could run my hand over my iPod in that spot and hear it in my ear or on recording but I did not see the mic until watching your video! Thank you! I hope this clears it out!

+1 on the video. I think this just fixed a family member’s issue with the Air Pods Pro 2. There was an annoying reverb / static problem that occurred constantly when running water, background noise, etc while the AirPods were in Transparency mode.
Even though the mic holes in silver bands looked clean, there was definitely stuff stuck in there

Does your AirPod box have to be charged fully to here better out of both ears?
This worked after a few cleanings. The first few times didn't really do anything but now they work great. If it doesn't work at first try again.

Though not related to AirPods Pro but was facing issues with the AirPods 3 low music/video volume even at max levels. Tried this trick and it worked like a charm. It was indeed the dust in the microphone holes that was causing the problem in the audio. Thanks much for this video.

I dropped my right airpod in the snow a few months ago and when I try transparency mode the mic on it barely works. I've tried using a pin, on the top and bottom mics, canned air, and even alcohol. Nothing works.
Use blue poster tac to clean out those little ports. It pulls it right out.

my left AirPod I'm not getting any sound out from it so I'm sending my AirPods Pro to Apple to fix or either get a replacement.
I had both of them replaced because they would work with the left, work with the right, but both would not pair together, they also had the static problem. I got them replaced for free, but the left one started crackling again. Got that replaced on Friday. No more problems yet
I had this issue, but got them replaced within the Apple recall program... But good to know if it happens again

Can you actually pierce that little hole in the bottom rings? Or is there no mesh? I used a toothpick and it went right through but I don’t know if I pierced through a mesh or not

cleaning that small opening in the back did not fix my problem with transparency mode sounding exactly like noise cancellation mode

I have cleaned all of the vents mics everything even the small hole and nothing helped everything I do won’t help with the transparency mode, I looked at my friends and his aren’t muffled or anything I don’t know if that’s something to do with the technical aspect or not
Thanks for showing the mic in the stem. Mounting putty (for posters) is great for grabbing some dirt out. I had some chocolate melt in the mic. It's ok now.

Great video. I wish I had found it sooner. I had sent back two pairs of AirPod pros due to this. I had a feeling it was because they were dirty but I never knew about that hole by the metal tips

mine doesnt do a static effect it has a weird ass sound when calling someone or when someone calls me, its like a screaming sound of some sorts, and as for the silicon buds or whatever they are called i tried all 3 sizes on my airpod pro 2nd gen and they fall off my ears pretty easily and i dont know what to do, any ideas?

Try with Blue Tac, sticks those things out clean. Brushing is prone to push it inward
Good suggestion! I’ve actually have had mixed results with blue tac on screens/mesh. I’m not too concerned about pushing things in to those tiny little mesh covers on that microphone because it is so small. May try blue tac next time to see what the results are
The transparency mesh that covers the mic on the side. I have dust or something in that. And I know it’s the e problem, how do I clean that?

I cleaned mine with rubbing alcohol recently and since then I’ve had this problem. I got mine Dec 2019. Would you think I have a problem inside the AirPod?🤔
Hi there. It's possible that you have some moisture inside the AirPods. Unless you use a very high percentage of alcohol (90%) then there may be water left over. Grab the AirPods by the stem and rapidly tap the speaker and mic grills onto your hand. It may help.

I tried to clean out the microphone and I still have transparency mode issues (i.e: it doesn't work). I don't know what to do at this point, since they're denying a replacement.
Edit: whined about it enough and got them replaced though the sound issues replacement program (for the second time).
What are the ear tips that you are using
Man I just bought a set of airpod pros for €50 after watching this. Took a chance on them, right airpod was nothing but static, no music played through it etc .....cleaning the mic and grills worked. I'm actually amazed that simple fix solved it and I just saved €150 on what I would of spend on them

I’m on my second pair (since launch day). The only issue ive had is when a large truck or car goes past when I’m out i get a loud hum in the right ear. Both pairs have done this. I ended up covering the top vent/mic. I don’t know if this has an impact on the ANC, it seems to improve it slightly, but it stops the feedback. Didnt know about the little mic on the stems though. Thanks for pointing these out.

This was three years ago but my AirPod pros play out of the bottom speaker and I don’t understand why
my issue is pretty similar but not exactly, so when i use transparency mode, one of them is obviously not as clear as the other one, couldnt find anything about it on the internet currently
but the audio itself of the airpods is fine, only the transparency
I got some water into the outside grill of my left AirPod pro and not my left ear feels clogged when I wear it, do you know how I could fix it
Grab the AirPods by the stem and rapidly tap the speaker and mic grills onto your hand. It may help.
Are the AirPods Pro suppose to work without the bottom piece? Lost the piece at work and worried if the air pod needs to be repaired or if I just need to replace the bottom piece.
So, are you referring to the little metal ring only or the entire cap of the bottom of the stem? The little metal ring is responsible for charging the AirPods Pro when they are in the case, so yes, that's necessary. If the entire bottom cap has come off then that's an even bigger problem because of the microphone located there. Either way, they are really not going to function very well without either one.
