You have used this android 9 with newer kernel, version 4.19 so the graphics device is not detected. If you use with kernel 4.9 and set 3D graphics acceleration vmware settings, it'll very smooth.

Neat video (I've done this about a decade ago and didn't use it much at all.) I do this now following all of your steps (using Android 9) I just get some 127Iconsole:/ # prompt and even if I type exit I get the same prompt over and over again. I'm clueless at this point. You make it look so easy. Will this be doable with any later versions of Android eventually too?
EDIT: I got into the Android environment after all (I failed to follow the step where you select debug nomodeset in the boot menu. cheers!)

Sometimes it takes few minutes to pass Android Logo. You may try to change VM settings including RAM and Video etc.
