- Hello everyone
I bought this car completely oem. It had one owner from new and it has been serviced all its life at the same dealership it was bought from. As nice as the s class w221 is, the s600 looked so boring on the outside, no different to a standard s320 cdi, apart from the rear exhaust sticking out and the V12 badges on the sides. I decided I was going to keep this car but it had to look a bit different from the rest of s classes. I bought the facelift amg front bumper, amg rear bumper and amg side skirts. I then bought facelift front grill, facelift door mirrors and facelift rear lights. Boot spoiler as well. Only facelift headlamps left to change, ( if anyone has a link for facelift headlamps please let me know )
I also bought 21" AMG alloy wheels and lowered the car too.
Amg exhaust tips with back boxes delete.
Also my fav mod, if you can call it that, is the number plate, S600 OCD ( Obsessive Compulsive Disorder 😆 ) I do have a bit of an OCD when it comes to my cars!
I hope you enjoy the video. Since this video was taken the rear of the car was lowered a bit more, it's as low as the front now. Last pic shows how the car looked when I first got it

Hey Sam can I ask what size tires you went with. Someone offered me a set and they looked terrible on his black s550 but yours look amazing. I'm thinking he had a way bigger tire then suppose to. Also did you go with the spacers for the look or because the 10x21 where to wide and would have rubbed. Silver is the best color for the w221

Thank you very much! The ride still feels nice and smooth. Compare to my M3's ( on coilover) and my RS4 that is on it's original suspension, the Mercedes drives a lot smoother than those cars even though its lowered and on 21's. Compare to how it was before with it's original wheels and height, it is slightly harder but in over a year no one has said the ride feels hard. It's been the opposite, they've commented how can it have such big wheels and drive so smooth! There is no rubbing.

What size tire do you have . I have a set of those rims in my garage, but the tires on them are to high in the sidewall to clear the front 4matic suspension . The tire store I use suggested I get 255/35R20 tires to clear the suspension .

Hello, going to use the exact same setup. Can you share which spacer types you used please ? There are two types of ebay (one with a lip on the centre (ad says for aftermarket wheels) and then the plain type. Which one should I get ? Do I need longer bolts ?

these are available from Latvia, i dont know if they are LHD/RHD specific though.
How well did the rims balance? I read in a forum that they shake at high speeds. I’m thinking of ordering 22’s for my 09’ s550.

They balanced perfect and I haven't had any vibration problems with my ones but one thing that is important is the tyres. If the tyres are budget/cheap quality, it is harder to balance the wheels and they can cause vibration as I have seen this in the past even with smaller size wheels.
I have Continental tyres fitted to the car.
I'm not sure about the 22's if there is any problems balancing them

Thank you.... bonnet is the same in prefacelift and facelift model. The only difference at the front is the grill, headlamps and bumper..... I have changed everything for facelift model except the headlamps as I still haven't found a set that is plug and play. Then it would be 100% complete on the outside

@@gracjantyca7973 Hello, I have done about 1000+ miles and so far so I cabt comment on how reliable they are, time will tell. I can tell you what I've done to it so far even though the car has been serviced by mercedes dealership all its life. I had to do both engine mounts as they don't last too long, this can be quite an expensive job depending where you get it done... gear box mount was changed at the same time, this is a 5 mins job. I also changed alternator belt with the tensioners as it hadn't been done for few years so even though I changed them, i could have left them for some time. One thing that this engines will give problems for sure are the coil packs.... they last about 60000 miles and they cost over £1500 each! This problem is a matter of time as it will happen at some point so keep that in mind or make sure they've been done recently. One problem I had was one of the oil cooler pipe had corroded and started to leak oil, I had to order both pipes with the oil cooler as the pipes are steel and oil cooler aluminium so you can't take them apart, just the 2 pipes with oil cooler were £1000 parts alone! Nothing is cheap for this cars and just like every other car out there, they all have their problems but then again how many other cars out there can you get with a V12 Twin Turbo engine!!! I'd say go for it, just make sure it's been looked after and you have records of what's been done to it. The performance is something else but be prepared for 10mpg 😄.

I had to use 7mm spacers at the front and 10mm spacers for the rears. I bought them from China as I couldn't find them from anywhere else in the spec I wanted them and the colour, which has to be grey inside. They costed about £1300+ including tax duty if I remember right

Yes its lowered.
I lowered the car by changing the lowering links. Very easy and not expensive either. I made a few adjustments until I was happy with the ride height but it's simple to do. They cost about £80 to buy

The sound you hear when I'm walking around the car is from the building not the car, some sort of compressor they have.

I got the lowering links from Ebay. The amg kit can be bought from ebay also as a whole package, including the facelift front grill and exhaust tips. I actually bought the amg bumpers from someone breaking an amg s class but the ones I've seen on ebay are made out from plastic and the fitment is like the original ones if you decide to go for aftermarket amg kit. The wheels were the hardest to find. It took me a few months to source them in the spec that could fit the s class and with the diamond cut face and grey inside.

The only thing that I've done for the sound is I cut the back boxes off. I think if you take the cats out it will be quite a bit louder but I didn't want the car to be too loud. I think this is just right.

The S65 has a sizeable amount of extra power but how do they compare in ownership and issues?? The S600 can be found markedly cheaper. W221 only. Thanks

Yes the S65 has 100bhp more and also more torque but going by what a forum member said that had an S600 and S65, he said the S600 is more comfortable to drive, not as noisy. As for performance, the S600 Is not far behind the S65, it's about .3 of a second slower than the S65 but as you say the price difference is quite big. I found the S65 looks so much better than any other s class due to the amg kit and that's why I fitted the amg kit on mine so I can't say i prefer the S65 for it's looks as mine looks just as good. I found the S600 very boring to look at on standard form, looks just like a s320 diesel, I think the amg kit makes it stand out but still looks like a serious car. As for performance, you can get the S600 remapped and it will take it to 600bhp and 1000nm if you ever get bored and it will then beat Ferrari 599gtb, gallardos and other super cars. As for reliability, the suspension can go faulty and its expensive to fix. The common problem the S600 has that the S65 doesn't suffer from is the coil packs. One side costs over £1700 just for the coil packs so if you have to change both sides, plus spark plugs (24 plugs) and labour, it would cost close to £4.5k from mercedes😲. Apart from the coil packs I don't think they have other issues that cost a lot of money.
Also be prepared to get just over 10mpg ( I get around 11mpg to 13mpg 😄 ) but I still love the car

Thanks a lot Johan, appreciate your comment! I got the wheels from Ebay, this is the item number 173871277380 keep in mind that on top of the price you have tax duty to pay. I think I had to pay around £200. I think in total they cost me around £1600+ and then tyres on top of that. They are replica wheels and I could have got genuine ones for the same price or even less but from the research i done, if you want this style wheels you have to get 10j ones so they fit in the s class w221, as the genuine ones are 10.5j and they are too wide. If you dont mind the inside of the wheels to be black inside then you can find them for a lot less money. I wanted the inside to be grey and for some reason they are very hard to find and cost a lot more. Plus the wheels I've sent you the link, they also have the amg logo stamped on the face of the wheels just like the genuine ones, not all of them have the amg logo. Sorry for the long reply

I got the wheels from Ebay but it took me over 3 months to find them as they are super rare to come with grey insert and most of them don't have the AMG logo stamped to the wheels. They look just like the rear ones. The only reason why I bought this and not genuine ones is because the genuine ones are .5j wider and they wouldn't have fitted on my s class. Price would have been the same. I've looked to see if I could find a set for you but there is non for sale in this spec and colour from anywhere. They are GL63AMG wheels if you want to keep an eye and see if any set comes up for sale.
They are 10 inch all around and you'll need 7mm spacers at the front and 10mm spacers for the rears. Tyre sizes I've gone for are 245/35/21 for fronts and 265/35/21 rears. Next time I change tyres I think I'll go for a slightly wider tyres at the front as they are slightly stretched. The height is better now than in the video as I lowered the rear slightly more and it looks just right

They are GL63AMG wheels... 21x10j all around. They cost me just under £2000 including tax duty plus tyres on top. Tyres are very expensive too.
It's very very hard to find this wheels with the grey colour inside. It took me a long time until I found them

What size tires are you running? from the video, they look very low profile relative to the standard rolling stock. Has the ride been impacted significantly?
@@awfdahook1 Thank you very much! Yes they are quite low profile tyres, front ones are 245/35/21 and the rear tyres are 265/35/21. As for the ride, honestly I'm not exaggerating this but it still drives smoother than my e46 M3's. One of my M3's is on original suspension set up and original wheels but when I get into the s class after driving the m3, the s class is so much smoother, you'd think the M3 was the car that was lowered not the s class. Of course the ride is harder than before when it had the original wheels and height but it's still a very smooth ride.

I really appreciate you sharing your info on the car; it's such a well put together package. Take good care of it and keep it looking as outstanding as it does now. I will hopefully be modding my newly acquired S550 in the very near future and I have to say, your car has truly been an inspiration!

As for the interior, I agree with you 100% but beggars can't be choosers and in this case that's me. It came with that interior so I had no choice. If I could order a a new S class, it would have been red outside and white interior. I like something different but for now silver with grey interior would do. If the rest of the interior was black and just have grey seats with door cards, I would have changed it by now but it's just too much work to change a whole interior on an s class
Sam there are companies that dye the leather. Dye it black and simply wrap the wood grain with a piano gloss black look. Would look like a different car inside. Not that costly either. 👌🏻
@@LandscapeMaster33 the problem is that the dashboard is also grey and so are the carpets. Even though it would be a headache to change the whole interior, if I was to find an interior in champagne, white or cinnamon colour including black carpets and dashboard, I will probably buy it and change it but they will also have to have all the functions my seats have, heated, cooled, massage, front seats bolsters hold you as you go around corners and I don't want to loose those options. I need to get the headlamps to finish off the outside facelift conversion as it's the only thing that hasn't been changed outside.

Hi, the car had 245/35/21 fronts and /265/35/21 at the rears but then I did change the rears to 275/30/21. The correct size for the S class W221 should be 255/35/21 fronts and 285/30/21 rears as this is what I’m currently running on my S63AMG

It's original exhaust just back boxes have been deleted, taken out. It's what most people do to the S600.
If you want it louder than the next step would be to take out the middle boxes too but I think that might be too loud

It has 4pots calipers if I remember right. I'm not sure on the size of the discs. Even though they stop the car well, you can definitely feel the weight of the car when braking hard! It's a very heavy car
Yeah I see they're upgraded. My guess is that they're from an SL55. Those are the same brakes found on my E55 and I believe are not factory to the S600 or S65 for the W211.
@@WookieMonster01 hello, no the S600 comes from factory with this brakes. If you search for pics in google, you'll see they come with this brakes. I think in usa the s600 came with different brakes from what I've seen online 👍

The car has whatever engine makes you happy, if you think it's a V8 and that would make you feel better then we will leave it at that 👍😁.... it has an issue though, its misfiring on 4 cylinders so really I might as well say it's a 4 cylinder engine. All the best to you
