The n/a V8 AMG hung in there with the twin turbo V12. I wonder how bad the BMW would be beat by the 6.5 V12 Bi Turbo Benz?.?. That would be a fair match up.
The v12 turbo Benz is 50k more tho

I never said they have the same top speed. I said they all have similar top speeds. 190mph+ for any of these cars is crazy fast and completely unutilized bragging rights, nothing more.
And I comment on every post not because I disagree with their comment but because their comments are wrong and I merely correct them. Big difference.

A few reasons. Most noticeably is the BMW uses a 6.0L while the Lambo has a 6.5L. Another is the fact that the BMW V12 revs to 5500rpm while the Lambo revs to over 8000rpm. It doesn't peak that 691hp till 8,250rpm while the BMW 760Li peaks its 535hp at 5,250rpm.
They are both designed intentionally this way to produce the power they do for a reason.

Already said above that the test is presented more as a 'most powerful model' head-to-head test more than a pricing head-to-head test, so that means the S65 - also already said in another comment that if BMW won't produce an M7, then that's their problem when the S65 is compared to the 760Li.

These are the Top Gear review I miss that have seamed to have gone away in the past few series'
American Top Gear will never ever be as great as UK Top Gear...
The BMW m5 should have been a more suitable vs the AMG S63 or using an s600 insted of the amg.
Right. The S600 (510hp V12) Merc competes with the 760Li (535hp V12) or the Alpina B7 (540hp V8) competes with the S63 (536hp V8).
The main intentional benefit of the V12's are the smoothness and linearity in power deliver. Something no V8 can match.
That and the V12 S classes are still stuck with a 5 speed autobox, while the S63 at least has the 7 speed gearbox. The V12 BMW has an 8 speed from ZF!
As does the merc S600 which is the TRUE competitor for the 760Li.

Two different variants in fact. The S600, which competes with this 760, and the S65, which competes higher up.
It has been like this for a while. BMW and Audi dominate Merc in most areas but Merc still sells well (in the US at least) because of the brand perception and image they still have based on their PAST products.

Or A8 L W12. That car is quite something. The all-aluminum construction is something most overlook. It is so much more dynamic and sporting than either of these cars here.

Different cars and different motors for different applications. It makes the power it does intentionally.
The best thing about these cars is that after your license get suspended (for speeding) - you just hire a driver.

1080p, it's about time.
Those speeds are electronically limited. 186mph = 300km/h and 155mph = 250km/h. VERY common limiters the Germans use in their cars. Unrestricted they all have similar top speeds. The 760Li at 189mph like they say in this video as well.
And I was referring to acceleration as people were commenting on the drag race loss for the S63 by saying the S65 would have been better. It is not quicker.
The S63 has been available with a more powerful biturbo 5.5 V8 for some time plus in most countries you can order a 760i SWB version.

They tested the 760i vs the S63 because they both have an MSRP of around $140,000 USD. The Mercedes S65 amg MSRP is $212,000 USD. Thats why no S65
While it should not be a V12 against a V8! They could put more HP in that V12, but they did not want to do that. The M6, for example, has a 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 with 560 HP!

the 760Li actually is more powerful and more expensive than the B7, so S63 vs 760Li is pretty much as fair as Top Gear can make it

That isn't why, however. It is because the price and power are more on par with the 760Li, in which neither the S63 or S65 compete with. That is what the S600 is for...
James added weight to the benz by sitting in it.
you mean they've discovered that they don't have to record with a toaster or the more likely discovery of learning how to render in 1080p.
That compensates for the stig being lighter than air though, so that's fine.

You mean the S63 and S65, don't you? :) I think it's because of price, they didn't want to test the two strongest models, but the two with the similar price. And the price of S63 is closer to the one of 760Li, almost equal if I remember good what I heard from the video.

Why not let the 760i compete with the S65? It would have been V12 vs V12 and the S65 isn't trimmed for racing and burnouts like the S63 with its brutal V8!

well if you think about it, a V12 vs a V8. i think the AMG held up quite alright in that comparison

However it is also much heavier. The S63 is actually faster than the S65. Last one of each tested by C&D posted a 4.1/12.4 for the S63 and 4.2/12.4 for the S65. Both of which are even slower than a REGULAR A8 4.0T... NOT FAST.
